Subject: [Ontbirds] Brown Pelican - Lake Erie, Western New York, USA
From: WilliamWatsonSr(AT)aol.com
Date: 8 Jul 2009 1:21pm
Today and yesterday a Brown Pelican has been seen in Dunkirk, New York. It
is usually seen near the west end of the far break wall. Also a first
summer alternate plumage Lesser Black-backed Gull (rare in July) was found on
the docks about a 100 yards west of Dunkirk Pier.
Directions:
Make sure you have a passport, nexus, passport card, or enhanced drivers
license.
In Fort Erie the QEW becomes the Peace Bridge. Cross the Peace Bridge into
Buffalo and turn slightly right for .2 miles from customs and merge onto
the I-190 toward DOWNTOWN BUFFALO. After 6.7 miles merge onto the I-90 toward
ERIE. After 41.4 miles take Exit 59 and go North (right) on Rt. 60 toward
Dunkirk. After 2.2 miles turn left on Lake Shore Drive/NY Rt.5. After .3
miles turn right on Central Avenue and go on to the Pier. Look out at the far
break wall. If the Brown Pelican is near the left (west) end of the far
break wall to get a closer look ---- From the Pier turn right on Lake Shore
Drive. After a little more than a mile turn Right on POINT DRIVE going to
where it starts to make a left turn look right across the beach towars the
far break wall. Some people have walked the beach then the breakwall back to
the white with red rangelite at the harbor entrance. From there the pelican
is only about 50 yards distance.
Best Wishes for Great Birding,
Bill Watson

Subject: [Ontbirds] Great Egrets and shorebirds at Ressor Pond
From: Siegmar Bodach <sigipatti(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 8 Jul 2009 10:09pm
On the way home from work I popped over to Reesor Pond
there were 10 Great Egrets. I did not observe any leg bands when
some of them took flight or came on land.
There were also at least 3 Greater Yellowlegs and 3 Lessor Yellowlegs,
15+ Killdeers, 4 Spotted Sandpipers and at least 2 peeps- probably Least.
In Aurora at the MacKenzie Marsh there has been off/on 1 Great Egret.
Good birding,
Sigi
