[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] GOLDEN EAGLE among 161 migrating RAPTORs at CRANBERRY in SW Whitby, ON--Nov3/09 From: "Doug Lockrey" <lockrey33(AT)rogers.com> Date: 3 Nov 2009 4:25pm With medium NW winds, rising BP and light thermals as many as 12 observers thoroughly enjoyed spotting raptors coming in high and low on several flyways over a period of 5 hours, interrupted by a brief shower. During the first hour we had great views of a very dark morph adult Red-tailed Hawk. Then, at 10:40 a bird we all wait for arrived with all of its splendour--a 1st yr. GOLDEN EAGLE took 10 minutes to glide over our heads. The 161 migrating raptors-- 10 Turkey Vultures, 4 male N.Harriers, 21 Sharp-shinneds, 5 Cooper's, 2 N.GOSHAWKS, 2 RED-SHOULDEREDS, 110 RED-TAILEDS, 3 ROUGH-LEGGEDS, 1 GOLDEN EAGLE, 1 Am.Kestrel, 2 Peregrines. ----SEE TABLE BELOW. We did not spend much time looking at non-raptors. They included female PURPLE FINCH, 2 FOX SPARROWS. Cranberry Marsh, sw Whitby, ON--south roadside parking area on Hall's Rd. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] further to "Lesser" Canada Goose post Sunday at Long Point From: Andrew Keaveney <uofgtwitcher(AT)msn.com> Date: 3 Nov 2009 6:32pm Hello Ontbirders. I am sure that many of the excellent Ontario observers are already aware of this but I wanted to share with everyone what I found out from a few folks that emailed me about the "smaller" Canada Geese in Ontario. I can honestly say that I was UNAWARE that not all of the small geese are Cackling Geese. The bird I observed Sunday at Long Point was obviously NOT a Cackling Goose, BUT it was also obviously NOT a large Canada Goose. So what was it? Well, according to Alan Wormington the parvipes race of Canada Goose has never been reliably recorded in Ontario. The parvipes race is known as "Lesser" Canada Goose and is a smaller race of the large-bodied Canada Goose. There is however another subspecies NOT described in either the National Geographic Guide or Sibley Guide. How did this happen!!?!! This subspecies is the Hudson Bay Canada Goose, race interior and is likely what I saw. It breeds in James Bay/Hudson Bay Lowlands and migrates through here. This subspecies looks a lot like the parvipes race from what I can tell and the parvipes race seems to interbreed with several other smaller western races. However, from Sibley's notes the interior race still appears to be a large goose... just not as large as the residents here... so... I can't honestly say I know what subspecies I saw??? Sibley sums his article up with the following statement; "This is an irresistible challenge for some of us, but until we have a better sense of the variation and limits of these subspecies all identification should be approached with a healthy dose of skepticism." Jeff Skevington showed me a site where Sibley has an excellent article at http://www.sibleyguides.com/canada_cackling.htm I hope this helps birders look more carefully at "smaller" geese in Ontario, and to take a look at potential "Cackling Geese" that may in fact be these other subspecies that aren't illustrated in field guides! Good Luck! Cheers, Andrew Keaveney _________________________________________________________________ Ready. Set. Get a great deal on Windows 7. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] NO Brant, Colonal Sam Smith Park, Etobicoke From: Andrew Keaveney <uofgtwitcher(AT)msn.com> Date: 3 Nov 2009 7:17pm I did not refind the Brant. I looked along most of the rocky waterfront in the park. I don't think they are still around... perhaps they moved on to Marie Curtis Park or beyond... Ratray's Mash? There would be little point to looking for them in the morning to those of you whom emailed asking. P.S. Also Colonal Sam Smith park is yet again being destroyed by the city. The plans for an outdoor skating path had been finalized and despite a very active group of local citizens doing everything in their power to stop it, it's happening... but what the city didn't say was that they were going to clear the ENTIRE field next to the newest parking lot and powerhouse. Apparently this wasn't even included in the recent unveiling of developments... IT JUST HAPPENED! I have seen this park been completely destroyed (and seen much of the wildlife disappear) over the past 10-15 years while growing up, going to school and birding in the area. If I'ved learned anything from this experience it's that the city does what it wants... PERIOD. They toy with local conservation groups by "giving them a say" when really our say was never meant to count. I honestly wonder what kind of student would want to become a conservationist in this day and age! _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: Make it easier for your friends to see what you’re up to on Facebook. http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9691816_______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. Then a few other of the normal hawk watchers also came by. Maybe around 10 or so people came by today. Weather: The weather was not really like what they said it would be. One place said West winds changing to West-North-West, and being around 12mph. Another location said Northwest winds 10-20. As it turned out, it was West-North-West, changing to West, then West-South-West, then between West and West-South-West for the rest of the day. It was also around 10-15mph for most of the day. Visibility was clear all day and cloud cover went from 10% to 90% and was around 85% most of the day. Raptor Observations: Just kind of a slow, but steady day today, but also odd. No real flight line, some times the birds where low and over head, while other times or even at the same time they could be high and or distant. 438 were counted with 300 being Turkey Vultures, and 116 Red-tailed Hawks. 1 Golden Eagle was also seen. Non-raptor Observations: Several thousand American Crows went over all day long, and a total of 88 Tundra Swans also were seen. Predictions: Looks like chance for rain, and even with out rain should have South, to South-Southwest winds, and also light. So should be a slow day. With that said it will probably turn out really good... ======================================================================== Report submitted by Seth Cutright (seth.cutright(AT)gmail.com) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.smrr.net/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
