[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Phainopepla - seen @ 9am Thur Nov 12 - Brampton From: Frank Pinilla <fpinilla15(AT)gmail.com> Date: 12 Nov 2009 9:44am A bit more on this amazing vagrant. A large group congregated because Dave B had spotted the bird behind 7 & 9 Aberdeen Cres., when we got there a very kind homeowner at #9 allowed us into her backyard to look for the bird (thanks to Ian Cannell for asking permission!!). While standing there I spotted the bird fly up from behind #7 into a bare tree. The bird sat up high in decent light for at least 5 minutes. I believe all that were there got great looks at this bird. The bird moves around quite a bit and is in between the houses mentioned on Aberdeen, seen also from 90 & 92 Addington Crescent, some patience may be required (although I'm one of the lucky few who saw it within 10 minutes of arrival, others had come back from missing it the day before). You could also see down between the houses if looking from the driveway of #4 Ascot Avenue (but only look from the driveway as the owner was allowing people in the back while she was there, but leaving at 10am). Good luck to all who can get out there! Good Birding, Frank Pinilla Richmond Hill, ON DIRECTIONS: >From the intersection of Dixie Road & Steeles Avenue in Brampton, go north on Dixie to Birchbank Rd, turn right here to the stop sign where you turn left on Avondale Blvd, Addington Crescent is the 4th street on the right, turn here and park either here or on Ascot Ave or Aberdeen Cres. -- Sent from my mobile device _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Phainopepla in Brampton seen 10:30 AM Nov 12 From: Lev Frid <lev.frid(AT)gmail.com> Date: 12 Nov 2009 12:27pm Hello Birders, For all you Phainopepla chasers out there, the 'pepla was seen by myself and a few other birders on the northwest end of Aberdeen Crescent where it intersects with Ascot Ave at approx 10:30 this morning. The bird flew into a spruce from a backyard, posed for about a minute before taking off south, across Aberdeen. I made little effort to re-locate the bird (because I was supposed to be attending classes at the time!) but from what others told me he does move around quite a bit. An incredibly beautiful bird! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Phainopepla Continues in Brampton From: "Andrew Don" <adon14(AT)cogeco.ca> Date: 12 Nov 2009 2:16pm As others have posted the Phainopepla was being seen quite regularly between 10-11am, we had it on Addington Crescent, Ascot Ave. and for quite the while was eating berries in bushes on Ascot Ct. The bird put on quite the show perching on top of bushes and then a spruce tree before we decided had watched it enough, hope it sticks around for anyone who has to work during the weekdays. Directions (Courtesy of Frank Pinilla): >From the intersection of Dixie Road & Steeles Avenue in Brampton, go north on Dixie to Birchbank Rd, turn right here to the stop sign where you turn left on Avondale Blvd, Addington Crescent is the 4th street on the right, turn here and park either here or on Ascot Ave or Aberdeen Cres. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Presqu'ile Birding Report for Week Ending November 12, 2009. From: Fred Helleiner <fhelleiner(AT)trentu.ca> Date: 12 Nov 2009 8:13pm Until the past week, the interest in migratory birds at Presqu'ile Provincial Park has focused on new arrivals, most of which have by now put in their first appearance of the fall. Now attention is shifting to those birds which should have departed by now but are still being found in small numbers, likely lingering because of the unseasonably warm weather. Small flocks of TUNDRA SWANS have been seen on four of the last six days. The marsh opposite the bird sightings board is the best place to find dabbling ducks these days, including AMERICAN WIGEONS and NORTHERN PINTAILS, a second male of the latter having joined the one that has been there through most of this month. On November 8, a surprising ten CANVASBACKS were with the large and growing flock of GREATER SCAUP and REDHEADS that sits far out in Popham Bay just out of range of the land-based duck hunters. The most recent DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT sighting was at Salt Point on November 9. A late GREAT BLUE HERON was there on November 7. A group of three NORTHERN HARRIERS migrated overhead on November 11. On November 7, a MERLIN flew over Popham Bay. About 40 AMERICAN COOTS were in the outer part of the marsh on November 7. Shorebirds have dwindled from 28 individuals on November 8 to one KILLDEER on each of the past two days, the first of that species in several weeks. Among the birds on November 28 was a PURPLE SANDPIPER that appeared to some observers to have some DUNLIN genes. The bird was seen again on November 10, but not anywhere on Gull Island on November 12. BONAPARTE'S GULLS have put in a good showing in recent days, but none of the expected LITTLE GULLS could be detected among them. The first ICELAND GULL of the season was at Beach 1 on November 7. A SNOWY OWL was on Gull Island on November 10 and 11, but not on November 12. Again this week, BARRED OWLS are being seen every day, and not in just the usual Jobes' Woods location but from one end of the peninsula (near the lighthouse) to the other (Lakeside campground). On one day (November 10) there were five sightings, of which not more than two were likely of the same bird, judging from the locations of the sightings. Such numbers are unprecedented at Presqu'ile and may indicate that they had a successful breeding season in the Park. PILEATED WOODPECKERS have been seen in three widely separated parts of the Park this past week. A NORTHERN SHRIKE and a CAROLINA WREN were both at 186 Bayshore Road on November 6. The appearance of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in other parts of eastern Ontario recently suggests that birders visiting Presqu'ile might also be lucky enough to find that species. A late YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was at 186 Bayshore Road on November 7. The feeders at 83 Bayshore Road hosted late individuals of EASTERN TOWHEE (November 7), SONG SPARROW (November 9), and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW (November 7 and 8). LAPLAND LONGSPURS flew overhead calling on two different dates. Five PINE SISKINS paid a brief visit to the feeders at 186 Bayshore Road on November 11. To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton. Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that is available at the Park gate. Visitors to Gull Island not using a boat should be prepared to wade through shin-deep water in which there is often a swift current and a substrate that is somewhat uneven and slippery. It should also be noted that, because duck hunting is given priority on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, Gull Island, High Bluff Island, Owen Point, and part of the calf pasture are not available for bird-watching on those days until December 20. Birders are encouraged to record their observations on the bird sightings board provided near the campground office by The Friends of Presqu'ile Park and to fill out a rare bird report for species not listed there. -- -- Fred Helleiner 186 Bayshore Road, Brighton, Ontario, Canada, K0K 1H0 VOICE: (613) 475 5309 If visiting, access via Presqu'ile Provincial Park. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. Also it was nice to see a family group stop by today. They had some younger kids with them that were really into watching the hawks so that was really fun to point out birds to them and teach them about the birds. Weather: Today saw light Northeast winds at around 0-6mph. It also had 0% cloud cover and clear visibility. Raptor Observations: 233 raptors counted today with 104 being Red-tailed Hawks. 82 were Red-shouldered Hawks. Many of them must have stopped near the count site the night before, for we could see many kettles of Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks near by and early in the day. 3 Golden Eagles, 1 Rough-legged Hawk, and 1 Northern Goshawk were all nice highlights. Non-raptor Observations: Not much else was around. More American Tree Sparrows move in. Predictions: Might be kind of slow with East or East-South-East winds. But it should be warm again and have had some good days on light East winds too. So it might be OK. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Seth Cutright (seth.cutright(AT)gmail.com) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.smrr.net/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. Weather: Clear skies with brisk North-northeast to Northeast winds at 5 to 15 mph (gusts to 20). Temps. ranged from 4.5 to a high of 10.5 C. Visibility was excellent throughout the day. Raptor Observations: An incredible flight for November beginning shortly after 0800 EST. Kettle after kettle of Redtails and Redshoulders passed between 0900 and about 1130 EST. The flight gained substantial height by late morning, and was largely coming off of the lake or along the shoreline. Reminiscent of the Broadwing kettles coming off of the lake on north winds in September. One ad. dark morph Red-tailed Hawk in one of the first kettles of the morning; low and directly over the Tower providing great looks. Other highlights included 6 Roughlegs and 11 Golden Eagles. Non-raptor Observations: Tennessee Warbler- 1 HY (very late). Predictions: Mostly sunny (or cloudless) skies with East-northeast winds at 5 to 10 mph. High of 11C. There should be a fair number of raptors moving again tomorrow. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Justin Bosler (justin.bosler(AT)gmail.com) Holiday Beach Migration Observatory information may be found at: http://hbmo.org/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
