Subject: [Ontbirds] Niagara River - Saturday
From: "Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter" <dannapotter(AT)roadrunner.com>
Date: 22 Nov 2009 8:50am
Yesterday, Bob Spahn and I led the Buffalo Ornithological Society -
Rochester Birding Association annual Niagara River field trip. Around 30
participants began the day at Fort Niagara S.P. at the mouth of the river,
where Tom O'Donnell had arranged access into the Fort grounds. Here, out
over and on the lake, the group had several RED-THROATED and a few COMMON
LOONS, as well as LONG-TAILED DUCKS, RED-BREASTED MERGS, WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and BUFFLEHEAD. We looked through the few dozen
BONAPARTE'S GULLS and had one LITTLE GULL that came in off the lake and flew
straight upriver, allowing about the half group to see it.
The next stop was at Lewiston, where we had two adult LITTLE GULLS.
While crossing the Lewiston-Queenston bridge, just after clearing Canadian
Customs, the lead car had a white crow with a black face, cawing atop a
light standard! There have been one or two white crows in this area for a
couple of years. These birds are sometimes seen at the Adam Beck overlook,
across from the Robert Moses power dam. Speaking of which, that was our
first stop on the Ontario side of the river. And it was quite good with a
couple of ICELAND GULLS and an adult THAYER'S GULL. The latter bird was
flying and feeding and it was gratifying that most or all of the group got
on this tough bird to ID. Also here were two LESSER BLACK-BECKED GULLS and
one adult NELSON'S GULL (Herring-Glaucous hybrid), a life hybrid for many.
The group then checked the roosting rocks about 1/4 mile upriver for the
California Gull, which had just been seen there. Timing is everything
however, and we were a little too late, as the bird had flown. A LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL there was small consolation. As far as I know, noone
reported seeing the Black-headed Gull this day, which had been seen at the
power dam several days this week and as recently as Friday.
>From here it was on to the Whirlpool (where the aero cable car is). There
were lots of BONAPARTE'S GULLS here but no Black-headed nor even a Litte
Gull. So, after a brief pit-stop at Tim Hortons, it was on to the falls.
First stop, just downriver from the control gates. The highlight here was
another hybrid, this one a probable adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED X HERRING GULL.
Also here were a few more LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and a juvenile ICELAND
GULL. One of our group may have had a Glaucous Gull but the bird slipped
away before others could get on it. An adult and a juvenile Glaucous were
previously reported in the area.
The final stop was behind the gatehouse, where we added a few more LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULLS and another ICELAND GULL, but no Purple Sandpiper, which
still has not been reported this season. In addition to the gulls, there
was an abundance of waterfowl in the falls area, with COMMON GOLDENEYES,
HOODED MERGS, BUFFLEHEADS, CANVASBACK, SCAUP, GADWALLS, AMERICAN WIGEONS,
MALLARDS, BLACK DUCKS, and CANADA GEESE, all in numbers. In summary, I was
pleasantly surprised by the number of gulls and abundace of waterfowl
already on the river and it was great to be able to share the bounty with
such an enthusiastic group. Thanks to Bob Spahn for co-leading the trip, as
he has done for many years. Thanks also to Bill Watson and Kim Sucy for
organizing the trip and changing the date to the leader's preference and to
Tom O'Donnell for arranging access to Fort Niagara. Tom and Kayo Roy also
provided helpful information about crossing the Lewiston-Queenston bridge,
which is not the one I typically use.
Good birding!
Willie

Hello Fellow Birders:Once again our good fortune continues as Mr. P has been out
and about today. He continues to feed on the wild rose in the backyard adjacent
to #20 Ascot. Sue who lives there still continues her generosity by inviting
birders into her backyard. My other neighbour, Shirley at #8 Aberdeen is also
being very gracious by allowing all into her backyard where the viewing is
excellent. To access the latter backyard, proceed along the driveway and then
along the side of their closed-in patio, the large gate is propped open. (Please
do not use the gate at the front of the closed in patio.) Thank you.
Mr. P has been very actively feeding on the rose hips and barberry berries. This
morning it was very sunny and he was flying about and sunning himself atop a
number of tall bare trees on Aberdeen Cr. A mockingbird is somewhat
intrigued/enchanted with Mr. P. and follows him everywhere. So, keep an eye out
for the mockingbird also, as it may lead you to Mr. P.
For those travelling from afar, our weather has turned quite cloudy but we are
having intermittent sunny breaks with just the slightest of breezes.
Take care and good luck.
Directions: 401 to 410 north, right/south onto Steeles Ave., left/north onto
Dixie Rd., right/east onto Birchbank (landmark is Tandoori Flame Res. on north

onto Avondale and proceed to the 4th street on right, which is Addington, turn
right/east onto Addington, then left/north onto Ascot, then right/east onto
Aberdeen. # 7 has the log/guest book.

Date: 22 Nov 2009 12:50pm
Hey all,
Andrew Keaveney and Tim Sneider report a juvenile Golden Eagle at the Port
Stanley Sewage lagoons today at around 8:30AM. The bird was on the far side of
the lagoons across from the first viewing platform in a large maple tree. It was
around for almost an hour before taking flight. Also a Pectoral Sandpiper and 2
Dunlin were present this morning. Late yesterday afternoon they also had a Barn
Swallow at the Lagoons.
At Port Bruce yesterday, a 1st year Brant was present in the canal.
Interestingly, they observed a Ring-billed Gull the same day attempting to
consume a large Yellow-spotted salamander along one of the beaches in Port
Burwell.
Cheers,
Dominic Cormier

And what a magnificent display this bird put on from about 10:45 AM TO 11:20 AM
when I was there at 8 Aberdeen. Great views at it sat in the sun at the top of
the flowering crab tree, possibly warming up. Also close views while eating
berries in the low barberry bush. Great to see experienced birders such as Jean
Iron and Mark Cranford and other OFO members offering advice and assistance.
Some excellent manners shown by most birders, and good commraderie between
neighbours and birders. One lady raking her leaves had commented to me that she
had yet to see this bird, so I was later quick to bring its presence to her
attention. One birder loaned her his binoculars while another provided views
through a scope. She was thrilled and delighted by the experience.
Doesn't get much better than this.

Good company on a slow day.
Weather:
Almost no wind at all, but just very slightly from the Southwest.
Visibility was bad with fog and gray skies. It was also 100% cloudy.
Raptor Observations:
Very slow again with only 3 Turkey Vultures going by.
Non-raptor Observations:
Not many other species to look at.
Predictions:
Should be slow next few days if the winds stay from anything but North.
Maybe OK if sunny and warm, and or light East winds. Looks like chances of
rain, or rain/snow mix later in the week, so some birds might move before
that comes.

Park
From: Jeff Skevington <jeff_skevington(AT)yahoo.ca>
Date: 22 Nov 2009 9:04pm
Hello Ontbirders,
Today there was a Purple Sandpiper on the South side of Gull Island at
Presqu'ile Provincial Park. Other birds of interest seen from this location
were: 1 Little Gull, 2 Sanderling, 7 Dunlin, 1 Black Scoter and 2 American
Pipits.
Gull Island is accessed from Beach 4 at Presqu'ile Prov Park. Park at Beach 4,
walk out to the beach, turn left (south) and walk to Owen Point. From there,
walk east across the gravel bar to Gull Island.
There was very little water to cross today - a couple of inches deep and 10 feet
wide or less.
Good birding.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Barred Owls (Presqu'ile)
From: "Ott User" <willott123(AT)sympatico.ca>
Date: 22 Nov 2009 10:01pm
Hi Ontbirders:
The number of Barred Owls mentioned in Fred
Helleiner's latest report warranted a visit to Presqu'ile Provincial Park
this weekend. And I was not disappointed. Without much effort, I was able
to find 6 Barred Owls on Sunday. One alert Barred Owl was perched on an
open perch along the Jobe woods trail. The best was saved for the end of
day as a rather tame Barred Owl perched seemingly oblivious to the many
admirers below it. The owl flew from perch to perch a number of times.
This is the most number of Barred Owls I have seen in one location. Happy
birding.
One of the many Barred Owls.

Directions and notes from Fred Helleiner's email:
"To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. Visitors to Gull Island not using a
boat should be prepared to wade through ankle-deep water that sometimes
has waves that reach the shins. It should also be noted that, because
duck hunting is given priority on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and
Saturdays, Gull Island, High Bluff Island, Owen Point, and part of the
calf pasture are not available for bird-watching on those days until
December 20. Birders are encouraged to record their observations on the
bird sightings board provided near the campground office by The Friends
of Presqu'ile Park and to fill out a rare bird report for species not
listed there."
