[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Ottawa/Gatineau 23 Nov 09 - recent reports From: "Christina Lewis" <hagenius(AT)primus.ca> Date: 23 Nov 2009 6:48am Ontario/Quebec Ottawa/Gatineau 23 November 2009 Hotline: Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club Phone number: 613-860-9000 For the Bird Status Line PRESS * (star) To report bird sightings PRESS 1 (one) Rare bird alerts are now included in the introductory message Coverage: Ottawa/Gatineau (Canada National Capital Region) E. Ontario, W. Quebec Compiler & transcriber: Chris Lewis hagenius(AT)primus.ca At 6:30 am, Monday November 23, 2009 this is Chris Lewis reporting. The past week and a half produced a small but interesting mixed bag of bird reports...and who could complain about the almost spring-like weather at this time of year? On the 14th, approx. 5,000 SNOW GEESE were seen north of Winchester, and on the 17th well over 10,000 were reported in the fields along Hwy 138 south of Hwy 417. On the 21st approx. 50 were in a pond at the Embrun sewage lagoons and at least 1,000 were seen in the Ste-Rose / Moose Creek area. A pair of REDHEAD was at the Embrun lagoons on the 21st along with 6 BONAPARTE'S GULLS - a very late date for this species in our area. Three male GREEN-WINGED TEAL were rather late lingerers in the ponds at Andrew Haydon Park on the 21st, as were single BLACK and SURF SCOTERS, 18 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and 2 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS on the river on the 22nd. Two late RED-THROATED LOONS also put in appearance on the river off Dick Bell Park this weekend. On the 14th, the number of SANDHILL CRANES hit a new record high for the Ottawa area - nearly 100 birds were observed in the fields at Milton and Smith Rds. southwest of Navan. The same day, a DUNLIN was still on the beach at Petrie Island, and the large quarry pond along Moodie Dr. south of Trail Rd. hosted one each of ICELAND, LESSER BLACK-BACKED and GLAUCOUS GULLS. A NORTHERN SHRIKE near Carling Ave. and Rifle Rd. was present as of at least the 15th. The late BLACKPOLL WARBLER at Dick Bell Park was last reported on the 15th, and the only recent finch report was from the feeders at the Chelsea visitor centre in Gatineau Park, Quebec - a single PURPLE FINCH and EVENING GROSBEAK were noted here on the 17th. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Trumpeter Swans in Hillsburgh From: paloma plant <skorbar58(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 23 Nov 2009 7:17am My apologies for the delay in posting this. There were 7 Trumpeter swans on Mill Pond in Hillsburgh at 8 am on Sunday morning. They appeared to be 2 adults and 5 young of year. These may well be the ones that nested on Lake Roman earlier this year. I was unable to clarify the tags from where I was standing. These birds were also seen flying over Lake Roman on the previous evening. Also seen was a Hooded Merganser. Mill Pond is located behind the library in Hillsburgh, across from Foodland. Hillsburgh is on Trafalgar Road, just north west of Erin, Ontario. Good birding. PalomaPlant __________________________________________________________________ Looking for the perfect gift? [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Phainopepla From: dian bogie <owletdb(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 23 Nov 2009 11:15am Hello Fellow Birders:What a great weekend to view Mr. P. We had beautiful calm weather and most people had wonderful views. The interaction between the mockingbird and Mr. P. was very interesting. Often times the cardinals and the mockingbird were in close proximity to the Phainopepla and it was a good opportunity to compare sizes, agility etc. Once again birders and non-birders alike, enjoyed the excitement and it's been heartwarming to see the generosity of birders, sharing not only information but sharing their binos and scopes as well. The non-birders reciprocate by an eagerness to learn and by so generoulsy opening their yards for better viewing. Once again it's great to report that Mr. P. is alive and well and feeding hungrily at his favourite buffet, the rose bush in the backyard adjacent to #20 Ascot. Sue, who lives there still continues to leave her carport door open for easy access to the backyard. If Sue is not there she insists that everyone is welcome and to go ahead. By the way the weather here is lovely, mostly sunny with a bit of cloud. The fog has burned off but I've heard that the fog is quite thick between London and Hamilton. Continued good birding and good luck. Dian Directions:401 to 410 north to Steeles Ave., right/east onto Steeles to Dixie, north on Dixie to Birchbank, east onto Birchbank, north onto Avondale Blvd., east onto Addington, north onto Ascot, east onto Aberdeen. #7 Aberdeen is the location for the log/guest book. _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: Friends get your Flickr, Yelp, and Digg updates when they e-mail you. http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9691817_______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] Harlequin duck, Ottawa From: bob cermak <robertcermak9(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 23 Nov 2009 3:01pm This morning from 9:45 to 10:30 I had a Harlequin duck on the Ottawa river at the top (west end) of the Des Chenes rapids. There was a little fog on the river so I can't be sure if the bird was an adult female or a first winter bird. It was feeding with the Common Goldeneye drifting from about 150 meters west of the rapids down (east) into the top of the rapids then flying back west 150 meters to repeat the process. I watched the bird from the rocks at the north edge of the river at the south end of Chemin Vanier on the Quebec side of the river. The bird stayed mostly in the main channel (rough water above the rapids) about 50 meters from the south side of the river. At 10:30 the bird flew up the river out of sight to the west. Could it be heading to the rapids near Pembroke? Directions: from the north (Quebec) side of the Champlain bridge drive west on Chemin d'Aylmer then (at the lights) south on Chemin Vanier. Good luck, Bob Cermak _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: Keep your friends up to date with what you do online. http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9691815_______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [Ontbirds] More Black-tailed Gull News From: Andrew Keaveney <uofgtwitcher(AT)msn.com> Date: 23 Nov 2009 7:43pm Hey Ontbirders. The Black-tailed Gull was seen again as recently as last Wednesday (three days after the last reported sighting by Garth Riley). It was in Port Burwell harbour. There are a LOT of gulls between Port Burwell and Port Stanley harbours and many, many more in the agricultural fields. I suspect this bird is still in the area but is moving around quite a bit, as does John Lamey (whom saw the bird Wednesday). So keep looking birders! Cheers, Andy. _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live: Keep your friends up to date with what you do online. http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9691815_______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
