Subject: [Ontbirds] Guelph CBC results
From: "Cadman,Mike [Burlington]" <Mike.Cadman(AT)ec.gc.ca>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 8:10am
The 43rd Guelph CBC was held on Sunday, December 20. Despite favourable
weather conditions, the number of species (57, compared to 60) and
number of individuals (15352, compared to 15881) were below the average
of recent years.
Of particular interest were 3 Northern Mockingbirds (record high), 1
Northern Pintail, 1 American Coot, 4 Northern Harriers, and 2 Saw-whet
Owls (record high). The only other record set was for the Pileated
Woodpecker (10, over a previous record of 7), and the number of Wild
Turkeys (51) tied the previous record. 75 Turkeys were seen 500m outside
the circle!
Notable low numbers were recorded for American Kestrel (1, down from a
high of 32 in 1986), Great Black-backed Gull (1, down from 56 in 2000 -
Guelph closed its dump!).
Thanks to all participants, and Happy Holidays to all!

Sunday, December 20 - Nadine Litwin and I had a wintering Red-shouldered
Hawk in a small wood lot on Sherk Road about 50 meters west of the Niagara
Parkway (that goes along the west side of the Niagara River). Sherk Road is
between Black Creek and the Chippawa River and across from Navy Island. We
also had an impressive 54 Tundra Swans in that section of the Niagara River.
Best Wishes for Great Birding,

The Presqu'ile Christmas Bird Count was held on Dec 20/2009 this year.
Conditions were good but the cold weather of the last week reduced the
amount of open water from what we have been used to in the last 5 years.
Unfrozen water was pretty much restricted to the Trent River and open
water of Lake Ontario. The total number of species seen was 74, down
from the totals of the last 5 years but still above the 21 year average
of 71 species. An additional 3 species (Purple Sandpiper, Northern
Flicker, and Red-shouldered Hawk) were count-week only, with still two
days to go in the count week. Some highlights are below:
Species seen that have only been recorded a couple of times on this
count included:
Peregrine Falcon (1st since 1987)
Eastern Meadowlark (only 3rd time in 21 years)
and the
Chipping Sparrow, Marsh Wren, and Carolina Wren have been recorded on
less than half of the counts in the last 21 years.
The completely new bird for the count was the male Rose-breasted
Grosbeak that has been staying near a park feeder since at least Nov 13
- it appears to have a damaged wing but has managed to survive this
long.
Record high counts were had for:
Greater Scaup - 2076
Bald Eagle - 6
Northern Harrier - 8
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 9
Barred Owl - 14
Northern Raven - 7
Finally a couple of odd-balls were recorded
A Nelson's Gull,
and a "pink-side" Junco that was not quite an Oregon
Thanks go out to all the participants for their work during the day (and

Date: 21 Dec 2009 5:10pm
Update on the Barnacle Goose...it was seen again Monday morning feeding on the
lawn of the house to the left of the park at the end of Whittaker ave. It
disappears down the lake every day around noon probably feeding on other lawns
that cannot be seen from shore.
At Grimsby exit the QEW at Christie Street. Head north towards the lake. On
Lakeside Ave. turn left to Murray Street Park or turn right to Whittaker Park or
go to the stop sign and then turn left and go down the hill to the Pump House
parking lot at the mouth of the Forty Mile Creek.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Kleinburg CBC
From: Bob Noble <bob_noble(AT)rogers.com>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 6:12pm
West Humber Naturalists held its 29th Christmas Bird Count on December 20 in the
Kleinburg / Vaughn / Caledon and Brampton areas. Twenty-nine participants and 6
feeder watchers observed 54 species and 9,691 individual birds. Conditions for
the count were ideal with temperatures around the freezing point, no snow and
light winds. The number of species is just below the average of 55 for the count
but the number of individuals was well below the average of 12,300.
There were no new species this year but we did record our second Bald Eagle.
Other notables included Northern Goshawk (2) and Common Raven (2). Notable
misses included Ruffed Grouse and Pine Siskin. Low numbers were recorded for all
owl species (4), Common Redpoll (1) and Cedar Waxwing (61). Good numbers of
raptors were found including Red-tailed Hawk (92) and Kestrel (12). A shortage
of open water in the circle limited the number of waterbirds and gulls recorded,
with only three species of ducks and geese and 3 gull species.
Thank you to all of the route leaders and participants,
Bob Noble

Subject: [Ontbirds] North Bay CBC
From: Brent Turcotte <brentturcotte(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 9:50pm
2009 was an interesting count. Bird activity was rather low on count day. The
field observers got between 10 to 14 bird species each on count day and a
combined total of 25 species. Feeder watchers added two more species
(White-throated Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco). Because of these low totals we
were able to add six count week birds.
This includes Common Merganser and Bald Eagle spotted on Sunday. One of the
field observers got a Common Goldeneye. Other count week birds include Purple
Finch, American Tree Sparrow and Cedar Waxwing.
Total species was 33, the lowest total since 1986. Since I have been doing the
count the total species have been 44, 34, 37 and 33 from 2006 to 2009.
The only bird that was high was Common Loon with five spotted. 2nd highest
total.
A great many birds were low. Here is a low numbers for a number of species
followed by the year it was the lowest since:
Ruffed Grouse (1) 1986
Pileated Woodpecker (5) 1991
Common Raven (86) 1989
Red-breasted Nuthatch (8) 1986
Even more species were low but comparable to the low count two years ago.
Total number of birds was 1994 which is comparable with the 1664 number of birds
in 2007 and 1797 in 1985.
I figure the factors that made the count low include:
-Fair weather
-Low finch numbers. Hardly any of the finches are predicted to be here this
year
-Fewer field observers and feeder watchers
-Fewer feeders being filled. Up until I took over, the number of feeder
watchers was record breaking.
-With the exception of parts of Trout Lake, no open water
Thanks you to all participants.

Season's Greetings, Ontbirds people.
Please note that the following information is based only on notes taken during
the post-count compilation; I am neither a coordinator nor an official compiler
for the CBC.
The 90th annual Ottawa-Gatineau Christmas Bird Count was held on Sunday 20
December. While reports from all participants are not in yet, so far the
preliminary species total is 64 , quite a bit lower than average. No new species
were reported, and only 2 record highs have so far been confirmed. Some of the
highlights (and low-lights) are as follows:
- Barrow's Goldeneye (3) - 2 males and 1 female, Rideau River between
Riverain/Strathcona Park and Hurdman bridge
- Wild Turkey (23) - RECORD HIGH (previous record 17 in 2008)
- Bald Eagle (13)
- Red-shouldered Hawk (1) - Alymer, QC - 1st reported on 13 December; an
individual has been wintering in the Aylmer area for at least the past 2 years
- Gyrfalcon ( 1 grey morph) - near Carlington quarry
- Peregrine Falcon (2) - one each in Aylmer and Gloucester sectors
- Black-backed Woodpecker ( 1 female) - vicinity of Ogilvie Rd.and the Aviation
Parkway
- Common Raven (124) - RECORD HIGH (previous record 71 in 2008)
- Carolina Wren (1) - Hull, QC feeder
- Bohemian Waxwing (967)
- Hermit Thrush (1) - Britannia sector
- Common Yellowthroat (1) - Strathcona Park along Rideau River - 1st reported
here on 17 December
Zero American Kestrels were found, and numbers of gull spp. were low overall.
House Finch (644) and American Goldfinch (819) were low. Only 1 Purple Finch, 3
Common Redpolls, and 3 Evening Grosbeaks were so far reported, all in the Quebec
sectors.
The sector leaders will be meeting in the New Year to sort out numbers and
overlap among the sectors. The final results will subsequently be posted on the
Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club web site at www.ofnc.ca
Many thanks to all coordinators and participants, and especially to the Club des
Ornithologues de l'Outaouais for hosting the compilation and providing the
excellent food enjoyed by all!

Subject: [Ontbirds] S.E. Owls, Snow Geese, etc. - Halls Rd., Whitby
From: Steve LaForest <stevelaforest(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 21 Dec 2009 11:47pm
Season's greetings Ontbirders:
On
Mon. Dec. 21 at 5:05 pm, I found a Short-eared Owl near Halls
Road in Whitby. It was perched in a mid-sized (dead?) tree in a
hedgerow on the west side of the road. The owl took off, apparently
hunting, crossed the road, and was seen briefly with a second
short-ear. One or both birds were heard vocalizing. Ten minutes later, I
saw one bird (presumably the first one) back on its original perch.
This
site has been quite good for Short-eared Owls at dusk over the past decade or
so, but the birds are not present every year. The other local site to
search for them at dusk is along the Waterfront Trail just west of Thickson's
Woods. I checked that site a week ago with no success.
Also on Halls Road today I saw at least 6 Snow Geese (5 white phase
and 1 blue
phase) among ~5,000 Canada Geese. Check the fields to the west side,
and the lakeshore towards
dusk. A Northern Harrier (up to 3 have been seen recently) and a
Rough-legged Hawk were present this afternoon. On Dec. 17, there were
14 American Robins along the road. Note also the feeding stations
along the two paths on the east side of the road leading down to
Cranberry Marsh. The marsh is now frozen.
My recent visits to nearby Lynde Shores CA woodlot have yielded the
usual feeder birds plus a Brown Creeper and a Swamp Sparrow on Dec 14,
two
White-throated Sparrows and 2 Red-winged Blackbirds on Dec 16, and an
adult Northern Shrike on Dec 17. The woodlot is on the south side of
Bayly St., 0.6 km east of Halls Road (pay parking).
At the Brock St. bridge over Pringle Creek, I saw 3 Great Blue Herons
to the east of the road and a pair of Northern Pintail to the west.
The bridge is located 0.7 km south of Bayly St.
In the non-avian category, recent observations include up to 6
White-tailed Deer (including a buck) and a Red Fox along Halls Road, a
mink at the Pringle Creek bridge, and a beaver at Lynde Shores woodlot.
Directions:
Take
Hwy 401 to Brock St., Whitby (Exit #410), go south 600 m to Bayly St.
E, turn right (west) and go 3.3 km to Halls Road, turn left (south) and
go ~500 m to a hedgerow on the west side of the road. One of the
Short-eared Owls was perched in a mid-sized tree in the hedgerow, and
both were seen flying across the road about 30 - 40 minutes after
sunset.
Good birding,
Steve
