Fellow Birders!
I have a friend coming up today from VA. Could someone please post
the directions to the Conejohela Flats. I have never been there myself.
Any other good spots nearby? Just want to maximize the results if possible!
Thanks for your recommendations!

Subject: [PABIRDS] Migration in Pittsburgh
From: "Kate St. John" <KStJohn(AT)WQED.ORG>
Date: 1 Sep 2004 11:12am
Grackles:
For the past few days I've noticed Grackles migrating south over Oakland.
Specifically, they've been crossing over our building at 4802 Fifth Ave and
pausing in the trees around Central Catholic, then heading south in groups
of 10-15.
Nighthawks:
Saw approx 30 over East Liberty on Aug 23 rising up from the buildings at
dusk.
Saw 32 high over Squirrel Hill on Aug 29. There were probably more but the
trees prevented a clear view.
Not migrating, but watching the migrants:
Peregrines at Pitt:
They've been keeping an eye out for migrants -- either to eat or to guard
away from their territory.
Red-Tailed Hawks in Oakland:
A pair has been perching on the cross at Central Catholic. Also saw one
last night on Pitt campus perched in the big Elm between Heinz Chapel and
the Cathedral of Learning -- staying low enough that the Peregrines don't
care about him/her.

An immature blackburnian warbler just visited my window sill, which is on the
11th floor of an office building at Broad & Sansom in Center City Philadelphia.
It seemed to rest with its eyes closed for a few minutes, then disappeared.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Conejohela Flats, Lancaster County 09/01/04
From: Deuane Hoffman <corvuscorax(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 1 Sep 2004 4:09pm
Howdy All,
After not being able to get out on The Flats yesterday I was determined to go
today. Unfortunately, today was the start of the early goose season and things
sounded a bit like a nightly news broadcast! FYI: The goose seasons for The
Flats this year run from 9/1-9/25, 11/15-11/27 and 12/14-1/20.
Despite my having to lie low and keep undercover for much of the morning things
were good and got better as the day progressed. Hunter activity dropped and
water levels fell as the day went on. By the time I left only two trucks were in
the lot, as opposed to 10+ when I got there! and the level was down 1 1/2 feet.
A nice variety of shorebirds were found, not in great numbers, but in good
diversity. Two "nice" birds for the day made the outing worth it!
Semip Plover 15, Killdeer 50, Black-bellied plover 2, Am. Golden Plover 4,
Whimbrel 7 (all 7 found together feeding in the mud at The Volleyball Net), Gr
Yellowlegs 3, Ls. Yellowlegs 9, Spotted Sand 5, Sb dowitcher 2, Sanderling 3,
Semip Sand 75, Western Sand 3, Least Sand 150, Baird's Sand 5, Pectoral Sand 8,
Buff-breasted Sand 2 (first located on the grassflats at Avocet Point then seen
flying into the large grass flats just west of the blind on Gull Island.)
Nothing else outstanding just the usual ducks, gulls, terns, long-legged waders
and raptors. Things were a bit disturbed due to the hunting and most of the
shorebirds were holding tight for much of the day. I did see some small flocks
flying about but most of the birds stayed put till early in the afternoon.
Take care and Good birding,
Raven
