Subject: [PABIRDS] dawn flights, Berks
From: Rudy Keller <rkeller(AT)TEMPLE.EDU>
Date: 2 Sep 2004 10:55am
Yesterday, 9/1, frontal movement pushed some birds along.
Under clear, calm conditions, I heard ~320 nocturnal flight
calls 5:30-6:00 a.m. in eastern Berks. It was a mixed lot,
about 75% Veery, 10% Wood Thrush, a few Rose-breasted
Grosbeak, Scarlet Tanager, Bobolink and many unidents. This
morning, 9/2, I heard no thrush calls and only about 30
unidents during the same time period. Leaf rustling wind and
the ground level chorus of innumerable crickets probably
masked many high pitched calls. Better that as background
noise than the unrelenting rush of traffic characteristic of
more urbanized areas.

It's interesting that I experienced a simliar movement, and I'm well east on
the ridge from Rudy. I'm very near the eastern border of PA. Yesterday and
the previous morning, there was a great racket in the woods just before dawn
as everything moved in for the day. The makeup of the flock was similar,
also, but I traded a Bobolink for a Cuckoo. This morning it was almost
completely dead during the same time period. Can you imagine if you
extrapolate the numbers we hear at these two spots along the entire
Kittatiny Ridge?

Hi Everyone,
Here's a very interesting article proving that: what's one creature's junk is
another creature's treasure.
Take care.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Summer Tanager, Allegheny County
From: Paul Hess <phess(AT)SALSGIVER.COM>
Date: 2 Sep 2004 2:48pm
Hi all,
I found a Summer Tanager at Harrison Hills Park in northeastern Allegheny
County this morning (Sept. 2) in a little wave of vireo and warbler
migrants -- the second of this species reported in the county within a month.
It was a first-year bird with dull yellow underparts and slightly darker
brownish-yellow upperparts with no olive tinge anywhere. Immature Summers
are variable, and I haven't seen plumage exactly like this before. It
isn't illustrated in any of the field guides I have, but it's described in
the Pyle ID guide.
The county's other recent sighting was a second-year male at Frick Park in
Pittsburgh on Aug. 9, found by Ted Floyd and others.
Summer Tanager is rare in southwestern PA, including Greene County where it
was formerly -- but apparently is no longer -- regular.
Best regards,
Paul Hess
