[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] dawn flights, Berks From: Rudy Keller <rkeller(AT)TEMPLE.EDU> Date: 4 Sep 2004 4:53pm Species composition is changing. Yesterday, 9/3, under warm, clear, calm conditions, I heard ~ 260 nocturnal flight calls from 5:30-6:00 a.m. at my home in eastern Berks. About 50% were Wood Thrush calls, 40% Veery and the rest unidentified. This morning, 9/4, under the same conditions during about the same time period, I heard ~270 calls, 80% from Wood Thrush and the rest a mix of Veery and a few Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Scarlet Tanager and unidentified. The busy dawn calling period in the woods before full light featured mostly Wood Thrush calls. This is a good time for ground truthing the flight, as the birds continue giving their nocturnal flight calls along with more familiar daytime calls. Background noise was interesting. There were the usual crickets and creaky spring peepers and E. Screech-Owls. There were also peals of crowing from a neighbor's flock of exotic jungle fowl, a distant peacock that yelled, "Eeyow! Eeyow! Eeyow!," braying from a donkey by which you could set your clock and, at a quarry, a dump truck backing up and thunderously dumping a load of rocks. Or wait, was that a mockingbird? Aye, du yammer! Rudy Keller Boyertown, PA Berks County

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Green heron in "Duck Hollow" - Allegh. Co? From: CDIC1237(AT)AOL.COM Date: 4 Sep 2004 9:31pm Greetings, This evening, at approximately 6:00pm, while enjoying the serene view over-looking the Mon River, I noticed something fly into a snag overhang on the river. It looked different from the usual suspects that I see down there quite often so I got out my scope. What I saw was a med.large bird (approx. 16 - 18 in) that appeared to be blue-grey on its back a whitish under-belly with a streaked reddish brown "ruff" and roufous coloring on its shoulders. I also noticed that it had light coolred legs. Almost white. Another thing I noticed was that it seemed to have a dark streak on the crown of its head but I did not notice any kind of a crest. Unfortunately I did not notice the size/color of its beak. The closest that I can come up with in my Peterson's guide is a green heron. What are the chances that it could be? Thanks, Cyndi Dickson Pgh, PA
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Chickadee - odd - Lawrence County From: Cindy McConnell <pabirds(AT)BRICEROAD.COM> Date: 4 Sep 2004 9:32pm All summer I've watched an odd marked Chickadee without a mask over his eye. Finally, I have been able to get a photo and wonder if anyone knows if this bird is a mutant or some variety that I have just never heard of? There may be more than one. 2 images of this bird are posted at: http://briceroad.com/chickadee.htm Thanks, Cindy McConnell
