AUDUBON PENNSYLVANIA AND DAUPHIN COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION HOST 2ND ANNUAL
BIRDING FESTIVAL
Join Audubon Pennsylvania and Dauphin County Parks and Recreation for the
second annual Birding Festival at the Olewine Nature Center on Saturday,
September 25, 2004 for a day in celebration of the birds! Audubon Pennsylvania
and
it's many partners are celebrating the recently completed Susquehanna River
Birding and Wildlife Trail guide - a compilation of over 200 bird and wildlife
sites, trails and scenic drives around the Susquehanna River watershed where
you
can view wildlife in their unique habitats.
The festival will run from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and is for both children
and adults. The festival kicks off at the Wildwood Lake Sanctuary with an
8:00 a.m. bird walk with naturalist Chris Rebert. The day continues with a
variety of informative and interesting activities for the entire family
including
Raptor Identification; Birding by Ear; Nature Photography with Hal Korber;
Birds of the Lower Susquehanna; Choosing Optimum Optics with Aden Troyer of
Lost
Creek Shoe Shop; and the Flora of Wildwood Lake. Kids will learn about birds
and bird migration with various activities that will run throughout the day.

Exhibitors at the festival will include Appalachian Audubon Society, Dauphin
County Wildlife Rescue, The Bluebird Society of PA, DEP Peregrine Falcon
Display, Susquehanna River Birding and Wildlife Trail and Lost Creek Shoe Shop.
In addition to the festival at Olewine Center, several of Audubon's partner
sites included in the Birding and Wildlife Trail guide will also be holding
their own activities that weekend. Those that will hold activities include:
Nixon County Park in York, Nescopeck State Park in Luzerne County, Shaver's
Environmental Center in Huntingdon, Blue Marsh Lake in Leesport, Lancaster
Environmental Center. Lancaster County Parks and Recreation will hold bird
walks in
five of their area county parks beginning on September 20th. For a complete

WHAT: 2nd Annual Birding Festival sponsored by Audubon Pennsylvania,

WHERE: Olewine Nature Center at Wildwood Lake Sanctuary in Harrisburg (just
north of the Harrisburg Area Community College).
DIRECTIONS: The Olewine Nature Center at Wildwood Lake Sanctuary is located
at 100 Wildwood Way, Harrisburg. From downtown Harrisburg, go north on
Cameron Street, past the Farm Show Complex . Turn left at the first light
beyond
the Farm Show complex onto Industrial Road. Continue straight through next
traffic light and continue 1 mi. on Industrial Rd., pass all entrances to HACC.
Just past the I-81 underpass, turn right onto Wildwood Way.

The festival is free of charge and open to the public. Funding for this
festival is provided from a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of
Conservation
and Natural Resources' Community Conservation Partnership Program.
Audubon Pennsylvania, the state program of the National Audubon Society, is
dedicated to conserving birds, other wildlife and their habitats for the
benefit of humanity and the earth's biodiversity.
Festival highlights**
8:00 a.m. - Join Chris Rebert, Dauphin County Parks Naturalist, for an early
morning lookout for warblers and other migrating birds common to the park in
September. Bring binoculars and dress appropriately for the weather (limited
number of binoculars available).
9:45 - 10:15 a.m. - If hawks, falcons and eagles are your passion, join Kim
Van Fleet, Audubon's Important Bird Area Wildlife Biologist, as she walks you
through the basics of raptor identification. Then gather some field experience
out at Waggoner's Gap HawkWatch where she'll be on hand from 11:30 - 5:00 to
help identify hawks at one of the best hawk watching sites in the area!
10:30 - 11:00 a.m. - Do you hear bird songs, but can't match them to the
bird? Join Chris Rebert and learn how to identify common bird songs and calls.
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Perhaps you'd like to learn about photographing
wildlife, then you'll want to join Hal Korber, Photographer/Wildlife Education
Specialist with the PA Game Commission for a session on the art of nature
photography.
12:15-1:00 p.m. - Join Appalachian Audubon member Walter Koerber for an
informative stroll along Wildwood Lake trails to learn about the myriad of
plant
species that create this unique habitat.
1:00 - 1:30 p.m. - What birds live around the lower Susquehanna? Join Tom
Johnson for an informative session on what you can expect to see on a typical
day along the lower Susquehanna.
1:45 - 2:15 p.m. - A repeat of Birding by Ear with Chris Rebert.
2:30 - 3:00 p.m. - Need help choosing binoculars? Learn the basics with
Aden Troyer.
3:15 - 3:45 p.m. - Learn about the origins and development of the Susquehanna
River Birding and Wildlife Trail guide and its contribution to Pennsylvania's
expanding ecotourism trend. Holly Smith, education assistant with Audubon
Pennsylvania, will share some of the great natural areas found in the
Susquehanna River watershed.

The Bald Eagle was seen soaring over the parking lot by the lake, it appeared to
be a second or third year bird. Never got a good enough look. The bird was
fairly low when first spotted while we were in the woods looking through the
trees but by the time we ran to the parking lot the bird was high and moving
away.

Weather:
Overcast to partly cloudy most of the day with NE-E winds at 8-11 mph. A
comfortable temperature of 68-76 F with the humidity around 50%. All in
all a very pleasant day in the park.
Observations:
Four Bald Eagles today: 1-2nd year bird at 1030, 1-3rd year bird at 1531,
and 2 adults at 1030 and 1559.
Other notable migrants: 1 female Belted Kingfisher and 2 hummingbirds
Predictions:
Patchy fog in the morning, otherwise partly sunny. Highs around 80. Light
and variable winds.

This afternoon I spent about an hour and a half in the backyard watching for
hawks.I had 3 kettles of Broadwings.One with 24,one with 31 and one with 9.They
came in from the East and kettled very high and headed west.Also saw 3 Sharp
shinned Hawks and lots of Chimney Swifts.

Weather:
73 degrees, light wind from the east, good cumulus clouds with good
thermals. High cirus above the cumulus did not keep out the sun effects.
Observations:
Yes, BroadwingSEPT is not scheuled to start until Monday, but conditions
for migration looked good and we did an earlybird scouting of the site.
Did not arrive until 2:00 EDT and the migration was well underway. We
were immediately greated with a kettle of 107 BW, 1 BE and 2 OS. Two
other kettles (25 and 54)were found around 3:30 EDT. About 4:00 EDT, the
migration shut down.
Predictions:
Much the same weather. Light and variable. We plan to be at Pleasant
Valley all day.
