Subject: [PABIRDS] Hummingbirds, Berks County
From: Joan Silagy <bnjsil(AT)TALON.NET>
Date: 12 Sep 2004 2:23pm
Today, while showing friends the hummingbirds that are coming into my
garden, I observed what to me was different feeding behavior. I mentioned
to my friends that they should watch the Cornus Kousa dogwood tree that the
hummers often perch there. While we were watching them, I saw a hummer go
after the red fruit. I assumed, wrongly, that it was just checking out
something that was red. As I watched this hummer it went from fruit to
fruit, checking. It finally stopped at one of the cherries and it appeared
to be feeding on the fruit. I don't think it was actually feeding on the
fruit itself but was perhaps feeding on the juice that was leaking from the
over ripe fruit, or else feeding on the insects that were attracted to the
fruit. It went all around this piece of fruit and it was very interesting
to observe and perhaps that explains why the hummers are always in this tree.
At Blue Marsh this AM I had a small flurry of warblers:
Black-throated Blue
Chestnut-sided
Prairie
American Red-start
Worm Eating
Oven Bird
Magnolia
Red-eyed Vireo
White-eyed Vireo
Scarlet Tanager
Rose Breasted Grosbeak

Visitors:
A lot of the great spotters were present today. Ones that I can't fit in
the normal list included Gene and Nancy Flament, Evelyn Merriman, Jim and
Judy Cooper, Lee Tosh (thanks for all the food!), Mike Leahy, Bob Stewart,
John Maxwell, David Kaltenbaugh, Jack Julian. Last, but certainly not
least, was Kevin Georg who was also celebrating his 50th birthday with his
daughter Sarah Georg. The birds were flying in all directions today and
we needed all the eyes we had to find them.
Weather:
Fog and low clouds during the morning limited visibility until noon. Then
the clouds lifted and we were able to see what was flying in the
afternoon!
Wind Speed - light
Wind Direction - WSW to SE to variable late in afternoon
Temperature: 16.8 - 26.6 C
Huminidy: 100% to 45%
Barometric Pressure: 30.17 to 30.20 and back down to 30.15 in.
Cloud Cover: 80% to 35%
Visibility: < 1 km to 10 km in late afternoon.
Precipitation: Fog early, hazy all day
Thermal Updraft Velocity W*: 400-500 fps.
Observations:
I don't know where they are coming from since I haven't seen this many
reported north or northeast of us, but we had a load of Broad-wings today.
The Thermal Updraft Velocity may be a factor as the 400-500 fps high
range seems to run through central PA down the Allegheny Front. This may
have been a BIG factor in today's flight.
Bald Eagle: 1st to early second year bird @ 12:21 PM, second year bird @
1:45 PM, adult @ 1:50 PM
A possible SWAINSON'S HAWK was seen by Joe Sabo as he was scanning the
largest Broad-wing kettle of the day (500 Broad-wings) with his telescope.
None of the rest of us saw it since we were trying to count the large
kettle with binoculars. His discription was a buteo flying with a
dihedral with a small white patch on its rump. I ended up classifying it
as an unidentified raptor since no one else saw it and there is a small
chance that it was a Northern Harrier. However, Joe has seen a lot of
harriers and did not think it was one.
Some Magnolia Warblers and Black-throated Green Warblers were flitting
around the trees in the fog.
Ruby-throated Hummingbird - 3
Monarchs - 34
Predictions:
Sunny with highs in the upper 70s F. Winds from the Northeast to East.
