Subject: [PABIRDS] Hanoverville Road Retention Pond Directions,
Northampton County
From: Dave DeReamus <becard(AT)FAST.NET>
Date: 14 Sep 2004 2:56am
Hi all,
Since this location is fairly new and is therefore not included in the
latest update of "Birds of the Lehigh Valley & Vicinity", I thought others
unfamiliar with it would be interested in knowing how to get to this
blossoming shorebird spot. So, here are the directions that are the
shortest and quickest from Route 22:
From the Route 512 exit of Route 22 (north of Bethlehem), head north on
Route 512 for about a mile and turn left at a stoplight (at the Golden View
Restaurant) onto Hanoverville Road. Go about a quarter-mile on Hanoverville
Road and turn right onto Harriett Lane. Park along the beginning of
Harriett Lane and scan the two retention ponds on either side of the road.
May I suggest that birders (using Harriett Lane as the reference point)
refer to the two ponds as the "West Pond" and the "East Pond" (it took me a
few hours to come up with this idea <grin>) when reporting rare or unusual
birds so that birders can initially focus their attention on the correct
pond? Just a thought.
A note about Arlene's directions: You CAN go north on Route 191 from Route
22 and turn left at the Spot Drive-In onto Hanoverville Road, but there's
ANOTHER large development under construction between Georgetown Road and
Township Line Road BEFORE you reach Route 512. This is NOT the development
that has the retention ponds. Continue past that development until you
reach Route 512. Cross Route 512 and go the quarter-mile to Harriett Lane
to check out the ponds.
While I was there, the Buff-breasted Sandpiper was seen in the near end of
the West Pond and at the far end of the East Pond. Thanks to Dan Altif for
finding this bird and Rick Wiltraut for confirming it and getting the word
out.
Good Birding,

Sept. 17 (Fri) PROGRAM, Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education (SCEE),
7:30PM. “Sinks, Sources and survival: Geographic Impacts on Avian Habitats”
by Naturalist Rick Mellon. Two structurally identical habitats can have very
different bird populations just because the size and shape of the habitats re
different. The program examines the importance of habitat size and shape in
habitat preservations, conservation and restoration. It provides theoretical and
practical examples of biogeographic/avian interactions and other stuff that is
fascinating, but not as complex as it sounds.
Sept. 18 (Sat) FIELD TRIP to Coastal Delaware and Bombay Hook NWR. Meet 8AM

Subject: [PABIRDS] Blue Marsh, Berks County
From: Joan Silagy <bnjsil(AT)TALON.NET>
Date: 14 Sep 2004 8:42am
Early this morning while walking at Blue Marsh I observed what I thought
was interesting behavior from an immature Cooper's Hawk. It was chasing a
gull across the lake and I actually thought it was going to be foolish
enough to try and take the bird. A gull, in my opinion, has to be large
prey for a Cooper's Hawk and though they can probably take one on land,
with a struggle, taking one that landed on the water would certainly be
disastrous for the hawk. Even eagles and osprey struggle if they get too
large or heavy prey. It was interesting to watch as it chased it to and
fro, but finally the Cooper's Hawk returned to "land hunting".

Subject: [PABIRDS] Small Canada Goose photo?
From: Paul Hess <phess(AT)SALSGIVER.COM>
Date: 14 Sep 2004 4:06pm
Hi all,
Does anyone have a photo of one of the very small Canada Goose forms that I
can use in Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Birding Club newsletter? I think at
least a few of them visited eastern PA in recent years, but I don't know
who might have photographed them.
As you've probably guessed, I'd like to use it with an article about the
AOU's recent split of the species. The small form would be a race of what
is now called the Cackling Goose.
Ideally I would like to have a shot of one in the company of ducks or other
geese to show its small size, but I'll take anything.
I waited until the last minute for this, and I would need it by the end of
the week. Either a slide or a jpg e-mail attachment would be fine.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Subject: [PABIRDS] dawn flights, Berks
From: Rudy Keller <rkeller(AT)TEMPLE.EDU>
Date: 14 Sep 2004 6:02pm
In Berks Co., I haven't detected flights of the magnitude
recently reported in western PA and NY. Numbers tallied
during the 5:30-6:00 or 6:15 a.m. descent period have been
about 150 on each morning, 9/10-13. Winds have been low to
moderate and variable, often easterly. There were many
unidents, reflecting the diversity of spp. moving out. (Was
that really a Dickcissel or a very distant pneumatic lug
wrench? Yeah, those probably were Bobolinks under the jet
noise. And the crickets and katydids probably masked
warblers.) I heard the first Swainson's Thrush and Hermit
Thrush calls of the season 9/10, and the first Gray-
cheeked/Bicknell's (sounded a bit more like the latter, in
fact) 9/12. Wood Thrush calls predominated till 9/13, when
Swainson's slightly edged them out. I still hear a few Veery
calls each morning, but they probably peaked in August, as in
the last few years. On 9/12, Wood, Swainson's, Veery, dozens
of robins, Red-eyed Vireos, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and
Scarlet Tanagers were doing justice to a heavy crop of
spicebush berries, grapes and woodbine fruits at the edge of
my woods, as a nice little warbler flock gleaned insects.
Julia Child would have known what to say.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Pittsburgh Nighthawks
From: Robert Protz <robertprotz(AT)YAHOO.COM>

Dear PABirders,
Sunday afternoon in the Point Breeze section of
Pittsburgh at about 4:40 PM while some Chimney Swifts
were circling and feeding quite high overhead (at
least 200 ft) I observed 2 Nighthawks flying by going
NORTH!
Monday evening in East Liberty, just before 7:30 PM, I
observed ~12 Nighthawks moving through and feeding
while doing so. I watched this group for almost 10
minutes near the Giant Eagle store at Penn & Shady
Aves. and it was almost like watching a tennis match,
because the birds kept flying south past me and then
circling back to the north while feeding. This also
made it hard to be sure of my count. They eventually
did all disappear into the beautiful sunset off toward
downtown in the southwest. There were also several
Chimney Swifts around during this time as well.
This afternoon I also saw 4 Chimney Swifts near the
intersection of Penn and 5th.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Blue Marsh, State Hill Hawk Watch
From: Joan Silagy <bnjsil(AT)TALON.NET>
Date: 14 Sep 2004 7:10pm
Today was a fabulous day at the State Hill Hawk Watch. It started out very
slow with not a bird in sight so we switched to song bird watching and went
for a hike. After lunch we returned to the hawk watch and were rewarded
with kettle after kettle of Broad wings. We arrived back at the hawk watch
close to noon and I stayed until 4:45 PM when the Broad wings had really
slowed down and started landing in the trees to roost for the night.
Seen were:
Bald Eagles, 2 adult
Osprey, 7
Northern Harrier, 3
Cooper's Hawk, 3
Sharp Shinned Hawk, 1
Broad-winged Hawk, 2,368
Unfortunately we probably missed a lot of the kettles because there were
only 5 observers there and the Broad-wings were coming in from several
directions. Winds were SE and the birds were flying SW over or behind the
look-out.
We regretted ever leaving the hawk watch and wonder how many Broad-wings we
missed.
Although the sky was very overcast, at times the hawks came down into the
small patches of blue that appeared from time to time. At one point we had
a kettle of over 1000 Broad-wings. Our walk produced very little in the way
of song birds. We saw Black-throated Green Warbler, Common Yellow-throat
and many immature Indigo Buntings.
On another note, today's Reading Eagle, September 14, 2004 honored one of
our local young birders. Ms. Ellen Grim of Hamburg, PA. This dedicated
young lady is an excellent birder, helps with point counts, breeding bird
census, volunteers at Hawk Mtn. and is taking the college level ornithology
course offered by Cornell. I am sure it can be viewed by going to

From: Carole Willenpart <cwillenpart(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 14 Sep 2004 8:38pm
Hi PABirders,
Yesterday had a red-breasted nuthatch at my feeder, I didn't expect them
again this year, a little early as well for here.
Today we spent several very enjoyable hours just sitting quietly in our
woods watching what went on around us and what a relaxing and informative time
it was! Saw the following notable birds:
Warblers-
black-throated green
nashville
magnolia
yellowthroat
hooded
Others-
blue-headed vireo
rose-breasted grosbeak
scarlet tanager
wood thrush
hairy woodpecker
pileated woodpecker
Best warbler of the day was seen back at the house while eating a late lunch
on the deck. A Wilson's warbler was in the small cherry tree right next to the
deck, didn't even have to get up from the chair to see it! First one I've seen
here this year.
I'm still trying to hear nocturnal flight calls but not having much luck,
crickets and katydids are very loud here as well as distant heavy equipment
noise. But I keep getting inspired to try every time I read reports! Off to
Montezuma NWR in NY on Thursday...

was near 100%, hazy the rest of the time, occasionally with peaks of solar
radiation getting trough and a few birds flying. Indeed, it actually rained a
bit on out southern site. Basically, the weather today was a blocking system
that could not have allowed much to get through. BroadwingSEPT sites got only
100 birds each or fewer.
It is starting to get interesting. Obviously some birds are moving, but the
numbers posted from northern NJ and southern CT do not seem to be getting
through to PA yet. I am encouraged by many of the Massachusetts sites now
getting good numbers of BW, although nothing really big yet. Southern New
Hampshire and central Vermont are posting decent numbers also. Winds up in New
England were highly variable, depending on site, but all seemed to have a bit of
an easterly component. My impression is that the migration so far is more
inland than usual, but nothing like last year which was a disaster for the
coastal plains (east of the Appalachians) sites. In other words, I believe
there has been a bit of a wind drift away from the coast, but not too much.
There clearly is a large number of BWs queued to make a flight over NJ and PA as
soon as the weather clears. And also, it would seem to me that these numbers
are not the big wave, rather the leading edge of the migration.
It looks like rain is likely in the morning here in PA. Not sure when it
clears, east winds will continue. Thursday may be sunnier, but winds are
expected to shift around to the SW. This will block the birds again. The high
pressure over Maine right now is really big, and really strong. It is likely to
move very slowly, and hurricane Ivan may stall over the deep south and dump
tons of rain. We will get rain Friday, Saturday, and ... maybe many more days.
When will the BWs fly? Who knows. But it would seem that the upcoming weather
will effectively block them for many, many days, perhaps almost a week. They
will not be able to escape to the west as they did these last years, they will
sit and wait, as must we.
What do others think?

Allegheny Front Hawk Watch
Maintained and operated by the Allegheny Plateau Audubon Society.
The Allegheny Front Hawk Watch is located on the Somerset / Bedford Co.
border. It is located within 6.4km of Central City at an elevation of 820
meters, which may be the highest elevation Pa. hawk watch. The high
elevation, while producing many eye level birds, also produces frequent
days
of fog. Monitoring has occurred since 1989. Best winds are from the
East.
The site is manned 7 days a week for 4 months in the fall and 3 months in
the
spring. Parking is available at the site and special parking is available
for
the handicapped.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Conneaut Harbor Shorebirds
From: Walter Shaffer <wdshaffer(AT)ICUBED.COM>

Hi,
Today we visited Conneaut Harbor and I'm happy to report that the water level
has dropped significantly. The habitat today was still not as good as last year,
but it was certainly the best I've seen this year. Despite this, most of the
peeps have gone. We did have a juv. Stilt Sandpiper and 2 juv. Am. Golden
Plovers. A Least Sandpiper and 7 Sanderlings were present and 4 Red Knots
touched down for a second. A birder we spoke to reported a Dowitcher. If you are
in Northwestern Pa. in the near future, this area may be worth checking out.

From: Roberto Cavalieros <rocavalieros(AT)MINDSPRING.COM>

(please post!!)
To anyone who may have had even casual contact with the Silver-haired bat
that landed on the ship Sunday 9/12 during the pelagic birding trip to
Hudson Canyon:
** LASTEST CDC RECOMMENDATIONS, FOR EVEN CASUAL CONTACT WITH A BAT IS, AS
SOON AS POSSIBLE, TO RECEIVE RABIES IMMUNOGLOBULINS AND BEGIN COURSE OF
RABIES VACCINES.
I GOT MINE TODAY...Go to an Emergency Room for this.
Rabies is uniformly fatal and recent cases had only casual exposure, no
bites.
Best regards,
Roberto Cavalieros, M.D.
