Subject: [PABIRDS] Buff-breasted Sandpiper-Northampton Co. Yes.
From: "Todd A. Watkins" <watkins(AT)LEHIGH.EDU>
Date: 15 Sep 2004 10:30am
The Buff-breasted Sandpiper remained at the Hanoverville Rd./Harriett
Lane retention pond this morning about 9:00 AM. Following Dave
DeReamus's brilliant nomenclature, the bird was actively feeding in the
grass near the middle of the East Pond area, to the east of Harriett
Lane, with about 8 Least Sandpipers and 3 Killdeer.

Subject: [PABIRDS] State Hill Hawk Watch, Blue Marsh, Berks Ctny.
From: Joan Silagy <bnjsil(AT)TALON.NET>
Date: 15 Sep 2004 3:15pm
At 12:05 PM EST today, Sept. 15 I observed an adult Bald Eagle come in,
high above the lake. This bird flew so funny that at first I wasn't even
sure it was an eagle. It appeared to be having some sort of difficulty
flying. The white head and tail sealed it, yes, it was an adult Bald Eagle
but what was it carrying. At first we thought it was carrying a fish. I've
seen many an Osprey brown bagging it but don't recall ever seeing a Bald
Eagle do that. The bird reminded me of a Swallow-tailed Kite as this long
thing was trailing it, like a big fish. Even with my Swarowski 10 X 42's I
could not make out, what if any thing this bird was carrying, and why did
the tail look so funny. Several times I saw the bird lower it's leg's so
that ruled out that it was carrying anything. My friend and I studied this
bird and studied it as it was in view probably a good ten minutes but we
could never determine what was hanging from this bird, giving it the
appearance of a Swallow-tailed bird, Hopefully someone else along one of
the other hawk watches will see this bird at a closer range and be able to
ID the problem. Quite interesting to say the least. It was followed about
5 minutes later by another adult Bald Eagle. Another good day at the hawk
watch, but unfortunately I had to leave for other commitments.

Subject: [PABIRDS] dawn flight, Berks
From: Rudy Keller <rkeller(AT)TEMPLE.EDU>
Date: 15 Sep 2004 4:15pm
Numbers increased this morning, 9/15. From 5:30-6:15 a.m., I
heard about 500 nocturnal flight calls while sitting on my
deck in eastern Berks Co. It was calm at ground level, but
high, thin clouds that barely veiled the constellations were
slowly sailing out of the SSW on a light wind. The majority
of calls I could identify came from Wood Thrushes, and their
calls predominated in the woods before full light. There were
double digit numbers of calls from Swainson's Thrushes (and
even a few creaky ones from real spring peepers), Veeries and
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and a few calls from Gray-cheeked
and Hermit Thrushes, Scarlet Tanagers and Bobolinks. Most
calls came in the second half of the listening period. The
greater the number and variety of calls, the more difficult
it is to identify and quantify them. Calls are short, often
similar, and field listening conditions never ideal. So I
estimate the relative numbers and enjoy the experience.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Marbled Godwit -- Butler County
From: Paul Hess <phess(AT)SALSGIVER.COM>
Date: 15 Sep 2004 4:59pm
Hi all,
Debbie Darney found a Marbled Godwit late this afternoon (9/15) on the
grass at the South Shore swimming beach at Lake Arthur in Moraine State
Park, Butler County. It's hanging out with the usual flock of gulls and
geese on the grass next to the beach.
Two Sanderlings were running around picking at something in the gravel
parking lot next to the beach -- a poor substitute for mudflat, but the
water is very high at the lake and there's no mud anywhere.
The South Shore entrance is off Route 422 between I-79 and Route 8. Drive
up the entrance road straight past the park office and past the first
parking lot on the right. You want the second parking lot -- the big one
by the beach. Look for the gulls and geese, and you'll find the godwit.
Be careful in the parking lot. Debbie says a Sanderling was run over by a
vehicle in the lot last week.
As far as I know, this is only the second county record for Marbled Godwit
-- after one in August 1972 at Lake Oneida.
Best regards,
Paul Hess

Subject: [PABIRDS] Warbs at Beechwood, Allegheny CO.
From: Brian Shema <bshema(AT)ASWP.ORG>
Date: 15 Sep 2004 5:11pm
Fellow birders,
I managed to sneak out on the property at Beechwood twice over the past few
days. Notable numbers of warblers are beginning to show, particularly
Nashville and Redstarts. Quite a few Magnolia, Canada, Black-and-white, and
Ovenbirds as well. Most interesting to me, however, are the vast numbers of
first winter Black-throated Greens, more than I recall from previous years.
My sightings have been between the hours of 8am and 11am; things really
begin to slow down thereafter. I am heading out to see what things look
like in the evening hours.
Good Birding,
Brian Shema

Subject: [PABIRDS] Chambersburg's Birch Run Reservoir
From: Bob Keener <keenerb99(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 15 Sep 2004 8:27pm
Dear PA Birders,
The reservoir is almost completely drained with lots
of great mud for shore birds - BUT, no birds, except
for a lonely B Kingfisher. I am puzzled why such an
expanse of moist mud can exist here in September and
there be no shore birds.
On the brighter side, Sunday, there was a
Black-bellied Plover and an American Golden Plover at
the Greencastle Reservoir along with many Killdeer.
Here at Heisey Rd the GH Owls and ES Owl have been
calling in the evening. RB Grosbeak, C. Yellowthroat
and YB Cuckoo were seen on Tuesday.
Good Birding,
Bob Keener

Subject: [PABIRDS] turkey vulture question--Luzerne County
From: Sandra Goodwin <chickadd(AT)epix.net>
Date: 15 Sep 2004 10:07pm
In August of this year, a colleague of mine was walking in the woods
near her house just around dark. There were some large birds sighted
flying overhead as well as the sounds of them hitting the trees, etc.
Soon along came the bird droppings, all right on target. She was
covered with dark green to black droppings. There appeared to be
nothing on the side of the path, etc., just on her. The birds had very
good aim, she says.
She has been back again and saw no sign of the birds.
My guess would be turkey vultures as I believe they will do this if
anyone gets close to their nests. There are no cliffs in the area and
it does not appear to be a roosting site. Does anyone else have further
suggestions as to what species this might have been?
Thanks.

Three images of the Marbled Godwit that was at Moraine State Park today
can be found at:
http://home.earthlink.net/~pomarine/index.html
The key word is "was" - just before 7:30 the bird took to the air
calling, circled for three or four minutes, and then disappeared to the
south. I do not think it will be present tomorrow.

Subject: [PABIRDS] BroadwingSEP - September 15
From: "Moulton, R. K." <Kirk.Moulton(AT)UNISYS.COM>
Date: 15 Sep 2004 10:39pm
All the BroadwingSEPT sites and southeastern PA suffered under near 100% thick
cloud cover, SE winds, and often rain. Reviewing the posts so far, today was a
tough day almost everywhere except the NJ & PA ridges. Also, it was pleasing to
see Little Round Top in central NH do well. They are still coming!
Basically, the weather did what it was supposed to do. The high pressure off
the coast of Maine is moving slowly out to sea and pushing SE winds over the
bottom of the system and S winds to the western edge of the system such as was
reported at Franklin Mountain in NY.
Tomorrow (Thursday) is likely to improve here in the afternoon and I am
expecting modest flights over BroadwingSEPT, winds will remain light but
unfavorable from the south. There are plenty of birds in the area and to our
immediate north.
Friday is likely to be a rain day as a front is now approaching from the
northwest, coupled with upper level moisture from bands surrounding Ivan. Right
behind this front is a massive high pressure, now over central Canada.
Perfect! It is so strong that now most of the computer weather models are now
predicting that it will force the wet remains of Ivan to stay well below
Pennsylvania. This is great for us. On Saturday afternoon we are expecting
things to improve considerably as this high pressure moves in, sweeping down
from the great lakes. Indeed look for Saturday to be a big day at Holiday Beach
and SMRR, and likely Friday to be big at Hawk Ridge near Duluth, MN. It all
depends on the exact timing of this high pressure.
So Saturday should be good as soon as it starts to clear, Sunday should be very
good, especially on the northern BroadwingSEPT sites and New England should also
have a great day on northwest winds, hopefully pinning the BWs towards the
coast. And this then means that next day (Monday) should bring the really big
wave of BWs over this region of NJ and southeastern PA.
It all depends on the exact timing of this high pressure, but you get the idea.
This high pressure will push Ivan and it's rain south of the Mason Dixon line,
clearing out the east coast and bringing northwest winds for probably two good
days, likely Sunday and Monday.
And yes, there has been good numbers in northern VT. I believe these birds are
the source of the recent good numbers over the PA ridges. I don't think that
BWs have escaped to the west yet. I base this on the weather reports which have
had unfavorable winds over central NY (mostly S or SW) from the big high
pressure which has been hanging around to NY's east the last several days. This
is not uncommon early in the migration. I believe the big wave is yet to come.
Anyone else have an opinion?
