Tom Shervinskie passed a report along to me from Friday, Sept. 10th that
he observed 2 Baird's Sandpipers at the ponds at the federal fish
hatchery at Lamar. I'm not aware of any previous records of Baird's for
Clinton County.

For the past two days we have had a Ruby-throatedHummingbird at our feeder and
at the flowers in our windowboxes. We had thought they had all gone thru, taken
the
feeder down and hurriedly put it back up last week when one was buzzing around.

Although September 15 is the traditional "leave Pennsylvania day" for
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, some do linger, and now is the time to start
looking for western hummingbirds (Rufous, etc). So keep those hummingbird
feeders up (and filled) and notify the listserve if anything strange shows up.

To all:
I regularly have rubythroats here in southern Northampton County all through
September and into the first few days of October. Most of them don't use the
feeders, choosing instead to use the flowers and natural insect sources.
Reaffirming what Frank Haas said, I leave a few feeders out until early
December. The rufous that showed up here did so in early November. The feeder
didn't entice it here or cause it to stay longer than it should have. It merely
made it visible for a short time before it moved on.

Hi all,
Thank you to everyone who replied to my request for a photo of a small
Canada Goose. I received pix from two people that show a good size
comparison between that and our usual large form.

Subject: Re: [PABIRDS] To anyone with Silver-haired Bat contact on
pelagic trip 9/12 to Hudson Canyon
From: "Paul A. Guris" <list-servers(AT)paulagics.com>
Date: 16 Sep 2004 2:49pm
Here is some information on rabies cases from bats on the CDC site. It
includes
the case of a NJ man who died from rabies due to exposure to a bat back in
1997. The details can be found at:
http://aepo-xdv-www.epo.cdc.gov/wonder/PrevGuid/m0050821/m0050821.asp
Some of the pertinent information at the end of this article includes the
following statements:
"Since 1980, a total of 21 (58%) of the 36 cases of rabies
diagnosed in the United States have been associated with bat
variants of the rabies virus, and the silver-haired bat/
eastern pipistrelle rabies virus variant has accounted for
15 (71%) of the 21."
"Bats are increasingly implicated as important wildlife
reservoirs for variants of rabies virus transmitted to humans."
"PEP (postexposure prophylaxis) is recommended for all persons
who have sustained bite, scratch, or mucous membrane exposures
to a bat unless the bat is available for testing and is negative
for evidence of rabies. Although both cases described in this
report had histories of contact with a bat, neither reported
being bitten. Of the 21 cases of human rabies reported since
1980 that were caused by bat-associated rabies virus variants,
only one had a definite history of a bat bite."
It sounds like you should not be concerned if you had no direct contact with
the
bat, or an object touched by the bat (such as cloth used to pick it up). If
the bat came aboard and was not handled, I personally wouldn't worry. That
being said, I am not doctor and this should not be viewed as medical advice.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Donegal Lake water level
From: Walter Shaffer <wdshaffer(AT)ICUBED.COM>
Date: 16 Sep 2004 4:00pm
Hi,
Yesterday, I stopped by Donegal Lake in Westmoreland Co. To my surprise, the
water level was down significantly. Most of the lake has at least a 10 foot mud
edge and the shallow end has about 30 feet or more exposed. Much of the shallow
end is now really shallow. Unfortunately, the only shorebirds there were
Killdeer, but this is an area that needs to be checked. I photographed by first
Baird's Sandpiper here more years ago than I'd like to remember. A flock of
Brant was here one year when the water level was low.
Does anyone know how long the level has been down? If so, have there been
shorebirds here?
Regards,
Walt Shaffer

wouldn’t you know it, the clouds broke apart around 6:00 and we had a nice
sunset.

For the first time this year, the dragonflies were on the move SW. Other

Subject: [PABIRDS] Powdermill Banding Website Updated
From: Adrienne Leppold <quasar_5(AT)LYCOS.COM>
Date: 16 Sep 2004 8:24pm
Dear Birders/Banders,
At last, we have updated the website with fall highlights and totals from the
first two weeks of September (Aug. 31 - Sept. 12).
http://www.westol.com/~banding/Fall2004_September1stWeek.htm
A busy fall season underway and making preparations for our first of two bander
development workshops (also currently ongoing), has more than slowed the process
of getting to regular web updates, despite the wonderful catches of birds that
have been making us more than eager to share with the rest of the birding and
banding community. There really are only so many hours in one day.
This update, separated into two pages, highlights some of the 26 new species
banded for this fall season, four of the 99 Hooded Warblers banded over the two
weeks (totals which have now set a new fall record for this species), a bird not
caught at Powdermill in two years, and the first Northern Mockingbird since
July 2003. Although separated into two pages, there are still a lot of pictures
which may be slow loading on dial up systems. We apologize in advance for any
delays in loading you may experience.
I am going to do my best to get on a daily update schedule, as this fall is
shaping up to be one for the record books and there are highlights everyday of
new and interesting birds.
As always, we thank everyone for their patience and continued interest in the
Powdermill banding program.

Subject: [PABIRDS] BroadwingSEPT - September 16
From: "Moulton, R. K." <Kirk.Moulton(AT)UNISYS.COM>
Date: 16 Sep 2004 8:39pm
We woke up today to 100% cloud cover and light winds from the SW. The promised
afternoon clearing never happened. Drove home after the count and, wouldn't you
know it, the clouds broke apart around 6:00 and we had a nice sunset. We were
on Pleasant Valley, to the north of the BroadwingSEPT line, and got 10 birds
total. Early reports from the other BroadwingSEPT sites, and around the region
seem to be about the same.
My weather prognostications from yesterday seem to be about on target. The only
modification is that we are going to get a bit more rain from Ivan that had
been forecast. Friday (tomorrow) is expected to be a serious rain day here in
Pennsylvania. Saturday is likely to rain ALL day with little hope of clearing
(I had previously thought it might clear Sat afternoon). The strong cold front
from the northwest is still approaching and will have the effect of whip-sawing
the rain from Ivan up over our region and into New England. Sunday will be a
clearing day and likely a good flight here isn Pensylvania, hopefully New
England clears also. Monday should be very good for all of us. Looking forward
to hearing from Hawk Ridge, Duluth tomorrow (maybe today?) and then the Detroit
region hawk watches tomorrow.

Subject: [PABIRDS] New Yard Bird(Ind. Co.) (possibly 2)
From: Marcy Cunkelman <cunkmar(AT)MICROSERVE.NET>
Date: 16 Sep 2004 9:20pm
Hi All,
Fall is in the air and the Black Gum tree purple berries are so
loaded they look like grapes hanging off the branches. Cedar Waxwing
numbers are at least close to 500+ They seem to hang around all day,
but mostly in the morning is when the most concentration is around in
the yard.
Yesterday I had #137 for our yard species-2 Yellow Throated
Warblers(today too)....they were chasing everything away from their
trees. Been watching Scarlet Tanagers eating the Blk Gum berries and
the pokeberries that are beginning to ripen slowly each day. I didn't
know they ate berries, but they sure are enjoying themselves.(cedar
waxwings by the flocks are on the pokeberries-right by the house). Many
birds trying to "sing"-Sc.Tan, RBGrosbeaks, Song sparrows, Phoebes(2)
have been calling and flying all thru the yard. I was pleasantly
surprised with 2 White Eyed Vireos right in the fenced in area by the
deck and almost the same time, I saw a juvenile RED HEADED WP. Wonder
if this is an offspring of the one that visited last year and again this
year...Ended up with 35 species for the day in the yard....4 hummers,
maybe more.
Yesterday while taking a break and eating lunch, I was watching for
Hawks and Monarchs. A bird flew right toward me and landed less than 10
feet away from me in the newly planted ornamental grass bed... I saw a
longer, dark tail with a whitish band(?)..not a towee or cedar
waxwing... brownish looking bird, made a sound kind of like a cedar
waxwing. When it flew I thought it seemed like a graceful sparrow
flight...then I got to see the face---dark mustaches with white, but
couldn't see the breast spot(behind leaves) or the rufous head....I am
almost positive it was a juvenile lark sparrow(saw at Arizona)..it was
with a flock of 25+ chipping sparrows....no luck seeing it today, but I
was not home all day. Will be checking all around since there are lots
of flocks of sparrows all thru the yard. Any other possibilities?
Walking sticks are "making twigs" on the deck railing and there are
several praying mantis around that are the babies that hatched this
spring. I see on the hawk watches, the Monarch numbers are
down....speaking of Hawk Watches, is it possible to put the county and
nearby city? Thanks!!
Sounds like a washout for tomorrow, but maybe that will bring the b irds
into the feeders.
Marcy

I thought I saved some information about Hawk Mountain -- where it is,
how to get there, its history, etc. -- but I can't find it. Could someone
please tell me about this place? Thanks.
