Subject: [PABIRDS] Lower Mount Bethel, Northampton County 9/21
From: Lillian Shupe <shupe(AT)OT.COM>
Date: 21 Sep 2004 9:47am
I walked up Riverton Road to survey the damage from the flooding. They still
had our road barricaded even though the problem is past were all the houses
are. Lots of trees fell off the mountain and washed up from the river.
There's an intact picnic table right in the middle of the road. I've never
walked up the road but it looks like a promising place to bird. There were
lots of Titmice, chickadees, Downy woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers,
robins, catbirds, whitethroated sparrows, nuthatches, lots of other small
birds I couldn't get a good look at and one sad looking Mallard who was
brave enough to go in the still very high, fast and brown river. The
highlight was an Alder Flycatcher singing its little heart out.

PABirders,
I took these photos of a RBGB this morning at Codorus SP. I tried very hard to
make it a Female Black-headed just for a little excitement, but I think it is a
1st year male, as opposed to a female. Someone let me know if I am wrong,
please.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Another new yard bird(Ind. Co.)
From: Marcy Cunkelman <cunkmar(AT)MICROSERVE.NET>
Date: 21 Sep 2004 6:15pm
Hi All,
What a beautiful(almost fall) day!!!! I was very surprised NOT to
see flocks of hawks, but I did see a huge flock of mixed
blackbirds...they were mostly grackles and red wing blackbirds,
starlings and it sounded like some rusty(s). They kept flying in the
woods around the neighborhood.
Early this morning while headed for the (magic) mailbox, I heard the
"yank yank" of a RB Nuthatch(number 138). Seems like when I head down
to the mailbox, I see or hear some cool birds...that's how I saw the
Golden Eagle....I also watched Scarlet Tanagers and the huge flock of
cedar waxwings flying from black gum tree(s) to the willow tree and the
pokeberries. Bluebirds were here and this morning I heard Wood
Thrushes, just as the sun was just coming over the trees...I see the
postings of all the nocturnal calls, and then they are quiet at
daylight....do that stay in the woods for the daytime and leave at dark?
Also, had a Common Yellowthroat in the"fenced in" area, checking out the
flowers.
Still several hummers, especially at the "Lady in Red Salvia" and the
red agastache(I need to make sure this is the correct name). Bloomed all
summer, but blossoms are fading... still smells great. My pineapple sage
that I wintered over never grew.....not enough sun this summer.
Sounds like some more beautiful days thru Friday.
Marcy

Hi all,
In response to Bob's posting... I also had the same looking bird this
morning early in my yard.. (Which is a couple of counties east of Adams). I
consulted the field guide, too, because of not being familiar enough with female
RBGB's to call it for sure.. or I thought I was familiar with them but this one
didn't look right. I was confused by the tan or buffy look to the breast and
the fact that I wasn't seeing streaking. But I figured that that was what it
must be, even though it did look like the pictures of a young or female
Black-headed in the field guides. And then it was gone and I wasn't going to
post and ask since I didn't have any photos at all.
Thanks, Bob, for posting and I am looking forward to the answer.

Subject: [PABIRDS] BroadwingSEPT - September 21
From: "Moulton, R. K." <Kirk.Moulton(AT)UNISYS.COM>
Date: 21 Sep 2004 9:09pm
This high pressure system is huge. It came in Saturday night and pushed away
Ivan the terrible. Sunday and Monday brought big blue sky N and NW winds,
pushing the birds coastal. My eyes still hurt thinking about the blue skies.
Today the high pressure moved down and parked over West Virginia, bring NW winds
and high cirrus clouds into the BroadwingSEPT area. The clouds cut the thermal
energy a bit and had the benefit of lighter thermals, keeping the birds a bit
lower, and white backdrop so we could see them. However, our only site that did
well was Buckingham (last from the bottom) with over 1000 BWs -report later
tonight.
Much the same weather persists in New England as well. We can expect the high
pressure to remain stationary, so today's weather will be tomorrows weather, and
likely Thursdays weather. Perfect flight weather now exists from Maine all the
way down to Texas. It is starting to get late now and all east coast BWs have
no excuse now. They are moving out. Because of all the NW winds in the last
few days, I expect the ridge sites to be done with BWS, but the more easterly
sites should do well for the next day or so.
We are very pleased to hear of the 1135 BWs from Mt. Wachusett, MA. Congrats!
They have been working hard all season and finally got a push. Almost all from
mid-afternoon, so this means they have not yet hit Quaker Ridge or NY and PA.
Also in northern MA, Barre Falls posted 1094 BWs. Much farther north, Cadillac
Mt in Maine had a nice flight day with 190 BW which is a good number for a
coastal site. Is this an indication of something bigger? Looking forward to
hearing from other New England sites. Closer to us, Quaker did get a good
flight also of almost 800. These birds should reach us tomorrow and early
Thursday.
