Subject: [PABIRDS] Chimney Swifts and Screech-Owl
From: "Kate St. John" <kstjohn(AT)WQED.ORG>
Date: 22 Sep 2004 12:57am
I saw several flocks of Chimney Swifts flying south over Oakland today. I
wasn't outside much, so there probably were many more. Many Blue Jays and
Grackles too.
An Eastern Screech-Owl in our neighborhood has been trilling a lot lately.
After some months of silence he's got his voice back. My husband & I saw
him silhouetted against the ballpark lights at Magee Field on Saturday
night.
Kate St. John, Pittsburgh
p.s. I was in Maine Sept 4-18 and went to the Acadia Hawk Watch on a big
Kestrel day Mon.9/13. My coolest migration experience: Fri 9/17 about 1.5
hours after sunset my husband & I were in Bar Harbor & I heard Thurshes
migrating due south. I had never heard the night calls because we live in
the city (noisy) & probably not on a Thrush migration path. That night it
was clear (tho cloudy) in Bar Harbor but we knew there was fog at the south
end of the island just before the sea. Those Thrushes were coming over
Frenchman's Bay, heading over the island and straight for the Atlantic and
into fog. I expressed some worry about them to my husband & he said,
"They've done this before."
That night around midnight Hurr.Ivan arrived in Maine. Well, Thrushes have
done this before so I guess they were all right.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Mystery Bird is a mystery no more!
From: Dave DeReamus <becard(AT)FAST.NET>
Date: 22 Sep 2004 3:48am
Hi all,
As many of you know, David and Arlene Koch's property full of great habitat
in Northampton County has produced many unusual birds, including an
Ash-throated Flycatcher, a first state record! I remember when some birders
thought she couldn't possibly be seeing what she was, and some probably
still do. I have been lucky enough to live nearby and see many of her
rarities. I always tell her that there must be something in the water
there.
Well, while getting the opportunity to bird her property yesterday, it
happened again----only this time >I< was the one that thought I was seeing
things and no one else was nearby. Luckily, I had my camera and began
taking photos of a bird that appeared to be a miniature version of a
Rose-breasted Grosbeak from behind with an incomplete plover breastband and
a bill color of a Caspian Tern!?!
Thanks to Nick Pulcinella, my Mystery Bird isn't a mystery anymore. See
what you think it could be. I've posted four photos on the following link.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Migrant activity builds, Allegheny County
From: Brian Shema <bshema(AT)ASWP.ORG>
Date: 22 Sep 2004 1:19pm
PA Birders,
I have been spending a bit of time each morning scouring Audubon Society of
W. PA's Beechwood property. Over the past week, both numbers and diversity
of migrants have continued to build. Yesterday I had a few good looks at a
Connecticut Warbler which Dave Wilton and I tried to locate last evening and
again this morning. Although we did not manage to come up with the
Connecticut (nor the few Mourning warbs I have had over the past week), we
did have a productive morning.
Beginning at about 7:30 am, just as the sunlight crested the horizon and lit
up the facing hillside, a wave of warbs began its flurry of activity. The
majority of the birds in this group were Black-throated Greens and
Magnolias. However a few notable birds were mixed in, including Wilson's,
Orange-crowned, and Blackpoll Warblers. A Philadelphia Vireo along with a
few Warbling Vireos were mixed in with the crowd. A few more birders joined
us and we picked up a few Nashville and Chestnut-sided warbs. We returned
to the top of the ridge where I had been seeing Swainson's and Gray-cheeked
Thushes, and sure enough they were still present. I would estimate that
there were nearly one dozen Swainson's and a half-dozen Gray-cheeked
present. (We only saw a couple of each this morning though) I led the
group across the property to a spot which had been producing the largest
numbers of birds, however not one bird was present there. Finally, we
stopped in the upper fields area to chat and while standing there, I pointed
out a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker working the forested edge, and then a Winter
Wren scouring the under brush not more than ten feet away. Dave managed to
call the bird in to about 3 feet where we all got really great looks at the
remarkably fresh plumage of this first year wren.
A total of 47 species were seen last evening and this morning including:
Cooper's Hawk
Northern Flicker
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (1)
Eastern Phoebe
Eastern Wood Pewee (2+)
Winter Wren (1) (earliest I have recorded in my list)

Subject: [PABIRDS] Where are all the migrants?
From: "Wiltraut, Richard E" <rwiltraut(AT)STATE.PA.US>
Date: 22 Sep 2004 2:10pm
Maybe I just don't get out enough anymore or I'm just getting slower, but lately
I've been really working at trying to find migrant songbirds and I just haven't
been seeing a whole lot. This morning I had two Nashville Warblers and two
Black-throated Greens in a tree in my yard and I was elated. I remember 30
years ago the European weeping birches in my parent's front yard used to be
dripping with warblers. Lots of Cape Mays. Lots of Tennessees. I just don't
see numbers like that anymore. I'm sure habitat destruction is the main
culprit, but there are too many other factors involved as well. I know lots of
birders have cell phones. Maybe birders can set a good example and use them
responsibly. Save them for the emergency or the rare bird sighting. Let's not
set a bad example and abuse them like most people do. The info that I've seen is
that millions of birds are dying because of them.

My name is Edna McGinnett. I have been working with the Ripley Hawk Watch
and Chautauqua Concerned Citizens for Responsible Wind Power and passing
information along to Paul Burroughs about what is happening with the
proposed wind farm.
We are putting together a master email list of those who are concerned about
the prospect of this project being built in a major migratory flyway. Our
aim is to keep people better informed and to disseminate important
information faster.
Would you be interested in having your email address added to the list?
There will be a meeting of the above-named groups on October 4 at 7 p.m. in
Westfield, NY. Three videos from wind farms in Australia, England, and
Meyersdale, PA will be shown. I have seen the one from Meyersdale already
and it concerns a family living beside a wind farm discussing the impact it
has had on their lives.
You are invited to come and bring anyone with you who would be interested.
Please let me know if you would like your email address added to the master
list. I will give you detailed directions to the October 4 meeting if you
would like to attend.
Sincerely,
Edna aka lbloisb(AT)yahoo.com

Subject: [PABIRDS] Powdermill Banding Website Updated
From: Adrienne Leppold <quasar_5(AT)LYCOS.COM>
Date: 22 Sep 2004 6:27pm
Dear Birders/Banders,
I have just updated the banding website with highlights from last week, 14 Sept.
- 19 Sept. http://www.westol.com/~banding/Fall2004_091404.htm
Despite getting rained out on Friday from Hurricane Ivan, we banded 743 birds
last week, 291 of them on Tues. Sep. 14th (of 47 species -19 of which were wood
warblers- and 54 species if we include recaptures). It is quite unusual for
high quality and diversity in September to overlap with quantity, so it
certainly gave our participants for the first of two fall bander workshops quite
a welcome. Our first owl for the fall is also featured, as are highlights from
a recent trip to Allegheny Front Migration Observatory.
We have added a new link from the home page, "List of Birds Banded Today." This
page will be updated/changed daily and previous totals will not be archived.
The daily totals for the entire week will be summarized at the end of the week
and included on the photo highlights page for each week.
Happy Birding/Banding,

Subject: [PABIRDS] Allegheny Co./Bald Eagle
From: Daniel Yagusic <dyagusic(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 22 Sep 2004 8:54pm
Hey all............
while playing detour driving around Pittsburgh,
attempting to get home from work today, I noticed
several things. First and foremost(birdwise),was a
second or third yr. Bald Eagle, who was circling
fairly low over the Allegheny River at Sharpsburg.
Such a beautifully marbled contrast of black and white
on his underneath.......and right with him, a turkey
vulture for a teriffic size comparison. The vulture
paled in both length and wingspan to the eagle.
Second thing was on a much more personal note. Hoping
the listserv moderator does not mind.
Having to detour through the main street of
Sharpsburg, then down through a part of Millvale, in
order to get home to Etna, I witnessed firsthand the
incredible destruction heaped upon these communities
by last weeks horrendous rains. I am sure the hearts
of many birders(as do I) feel a tremendous amount of
sorrow for the victims of this tragedy......the worn
faces on the many people I saw is something that will
live in my memories eternally. It is truly amazing
that more lives were not lost in this malay of nature.

Subject: [PABIRDS] BroadwingSEPT - September 22
From: "Moulton, R. K." <Kirk.Moulton(AT)UNISYS.COM>
Date: 22 Sep 2004 11:10pm
Today on BroadwingSEPT was blue sky for the most part and light NW winds.
Yesterday, when you spotted a BW, you likely could follow it to a kettle.
Today, no. The few BWs that were spotted streamed to the next thermal by
themselves. Makes you think they are done for the year. We will count tomorrow
Thursday as it is our last scheduled day for the season. It is hoped that the
several thousand spotted by northern Massachusetts watches on Tuesday can make
it to south eastern PA by tomorrow. No large numbers have yet been reported in
New England today. Weather everywhere is expected to the same as today. Ouch.
Core Creek was our bright spot today with 177 raptors. The farther north you
got along the BroadwingSEPT transect line, the lower the numbers. This has
(again) been a very difficult season. I think we were overflown by the big
numbers on Monday. Normally, I would think this would result in larger numbers
being reported in VA and NC today, but so far not. They too are being
influenced by this big stationary high pressure system and their skies are blue
too. In other words, they may not see them either. Next stop Texas.
