Subject: [PABIRDS] It's definitely fall
From: "Hopkins,Jeffrey A" <HOPKINJA(AT)AIRPRODUCTS.COM>
Date: 24 Sep 2004 8:19am
I made a quick run to Monocacy Park in Bethlehem (Northampton) yesterday
evening. I had my first white-throated sparrows of the fall as well as a
sapsucker, though I'd seen one of those Sunday AM with Linda Freedman. The only
warbler found was a northern waterthrush, and there was an empid that I suspect
was a least flycatcher, but it was too far away to make a definite call. Good
numbers of chickadees, including some rather large, brown-sided ones like I see
up in New England (Not brown-topped. Don't get excited).
On the way home I stopped at the Hanoverville Rd. retention ponds. The flood
waters have receded and there's plenty of mud again, but the only shorebirds
that I saw were a group of about 10 killdeer.

Hi All:
Every few seasons I get a Red Breasted Nuthatch that shows up in my yard in the
fall and stays through the winter. In 1999 one showed up on 9/14 and in 2001 on
10/14. This morning I had my first RBNU in the yard since 2001. Hope he stays
all winter!

Dear PA Birders,
Birds of note last two days in Heisey Road Orchard:
RB Nuthatch - 2
Lincoln Sparrow
WT Sparrows - 5
RT Hummingbird
Cedar Waxwings
BT Green Warblers - 6
C Yellowthroat
E Towhee
YB Cuckoos - 2 Juv and 1 adult. The adult was feeding
the one juv. Fascinating to watch! The juv was
begging with wing flapping and low pitched gutteral
sounds. The favorite food seemed to be plump, bright
green worms that seemed to be in abundance.
Enjoy birding,

Yesterday and this morning I've heard the distinctive "ank, ank, ank" of a
Red-breasted Nuthatch somewhere in the neighborhood.
Also I have four mockingbirds - which haven't been around all summer - in my
yard. I'm awakened each morning by one of them. Must be all the berry bushes I
have: nannyberry, black chokeberry, arrow wood vibernum, snowberry, spicebush,
pokeweed, berries from the trumpet honeysuckle and berries on the dogwood
trees. Also have cranberry bush, red chokeberry, winterberry holly and crab
apple trees but they go for those later in the winter. Makes for a nice
variety.

A pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches spent last winter at my mother's house near
New
Franklin, Franklin Co., and they left at the same time the Juncos did. The
Juncos
haven't reappeared but the Nuthatch appeared yesterday, so we're hoping they're
going to spend the winter there again.
The Goldfinches are building up their numbers here with 14-16 hanging on the
two
net bags outside our window.

I didn't find much in the way of warblers at Pinchot this morning but perhaps a
fairly early arrival of two Juncos.
Also, Wednesday I saw an immature Bald Eagle and Thursday a mature Bald Eagle,
both over Lake Marburg, Codorus SP, York Co.

Swainson's Thrushes were migrating again this morning (9/24/2004). I heard
them peeping overhead at 6:15 AM and I'm on the Allegheny/Westmoreland
County line just west of Murrysville. The calls were not as frequent this
morning as yesterday, though.
I was able to take a lunchtime walk around Bushy Run Battlefield today as
well. Best birds were 3 Swainson's Thrushes, 1 Wood Thrush, 1 Nashville
Warbler and 2 Black-throated Green Warblers.

Allegheny Front Hawk Watch
Maintained and operated by the Allegheny Plateau Audubon Society.
The Allegheny Front Hawk Watch is located on the Somerset / Bedford Co.
border. It is located within 6.4km of Central City at an elevation of 820
meters, which may be the highest elevation Pa. hawk watch. The high
elevation, while producing many eye level birds, also produces frequent
days
of fog. Monitoring has occurred since 1989. Best winds are from the
East.
The site is manned 7 days a week for 4 months in the fall and 3 months in
the
spring. Parking is available at the site and special parking is available
for
the handicapped.

Subject: [PABIRDS] FIRST EVER Black-headed Grosbeak Banded at
Powdermill
From: Adrienne Leppold <quasar_5(AT)LYCOS.COM>
Date: 24 Sep 2004 8:46pm
Dear Birders/Banders,
This just in, Black-headed Grosbeak banded at Powdermill Nature Reserve, this
morning (Fri. 24 Sept 2004)!!! This adult female was the first of this species
ever banded at Powdermill in the 43 year history of the program.
We couldn't wait, so we've just posted photo highlights of the bird at
http://www.westol.com/~banding/, linked from the home page, in addition to the
full list of other birds banded today and our updated running season totals.
After this Sunday's banding we will post a full week's summary with photo
highlights (yes, there were other highlights this week!)
With our thanks for everyone's continued interest (and with our apologies to
Derek!),

Subject: [PABIRDS] Somerset County late date Waxwing fledglings
From: "Scott F. Bastian" <ScottNJill(AT)SHOL.COM>
Date: 24 Sep 2004 9:40pm
Hi PA Birders;
Our family had two dependent Cedar Waxwing fledglings in a bush by our
old sugar camp this morning (9-24), with a third dead fledgling (sounds
like a punk band) on the ground. That's pretty late. We also had
fairly late nesting of Mockingbird in our yard (mid August) and what
seemed to be late Green Heron fledgling from our yard as well. It is a
little reassuring for someone chronically behind schedule to see that
even nature doesn't always make the cut. Or perhaps, more cynically,
climate change may be involved. [To Tom & Janet: I will eventually
enter that data on PBBS]

Subject: [PABIRDS] Conneaut Harbor Birds
From: Walter Shaffer <wdshaffer(AT)ICUBED.COM>
Date: 24 Sep 2004 11:24pm
Hi ,
Today, I arrived at Conneaut Harbor at 11am and departed at 4:15pm. The
shorebird habitat continues to expand. For the first hour there was no activity.
Then, five Semipalm. Plovers appeared. Around 2pm two juv. Golden Plovers flew
in. Birds trickled in through the remainder of the afternoon. A visit from a
Merlin cleared the area for about 30 minutes. By 3:30, Yellowlegs, Pectoral and
Least Sandpipers, and a varity of herons had joined the plovers. Findings for
the day were:
Juv Lesser Golden Plover - 2
Semipalm. Plover - 5
Least Sandpiper - 2
Pectoral Sandpiper - 2
Spotted Sandpiper - 1
Sanderlings - 2
Juv Greater Yellowlegs - 4
Juv Lesser Yellowlegs - 2
Juv Bl-crowned Night Heron - 1
Merlin - 1
