Subject: [PABIRDS] Thrush flight Dauphin County 9/24/04
From: Deuane Hoffman <corvuscorax(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 25 Sep 2004 8:08am
Howdy All,
Due to my absence from home yesterday I did not have the chance to post until
this morning.
Yesterday morning, 9/24, I awoke around 0530 to the sounds of swainson's
thrushes calling outside. I got dressed and figured I had about a half hour to
listen before I had to leave.
From 0545 to 0615 I listened in my backyard and encountered a very heavy
flight.
All tallied about 5,000 calls with a breakdown of
2,250 swainson's, 1,500 gray-cheeked/bicknells, 1,000 hermit, 200 wood and 50
veery
Of the gray-cheeked/bicknells I had around 10 that had definite bicknell's
qualities to them...it is nice to hear them among so many gray-cheeked calls as
they have a tendency to stand out.
I also had ~ 100 rose-breasted grosbeaks, ~50 scarlet tanagers and ~50
bobolinks.
Take care and Good birding,
Raven

Subject: Re: [PABIRDS] American Golden Pl., Northampton County
From: Gail Johnson <birdhusker(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 25 Sep 2004 6:43pm
My hat is off to Dustin. I found what I thought were 4 American Golden-
Plovers on Christian Springs Road, and took some video around 2:07 this
afternoon. Two of the birds were in the video when the birds flew - but
(on slo-mo stop-action) one had black armpits (Black-Bellied), and the
other didn't! Can you guys actually distinguish that naked eye? I sure
didn't.
I tried Hanoverville Road on the way home, and got a brief view of 3 Horned
Larks and an American Pipit, in addition to the Least Sandpipers and
Killdeer.
Thanks again, Dustin!

Subject: [PABIRDS] Clarion Co- thrushes, migrants
From: Carole Willenpart <cwillenpart(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 25 Sep 2004 9:45pm
Hi all,
Headed up to the woods this morning about 7:30 to see if I could locate some of
the thrushes I've been hearing in the morning. It turned out to be a good bird
day all around, lots of activity much of the day. I was able to find 1
gray-cheeked, 1 Swainson's and several wood thrushes in various places in our
woods. That's a first for me here, to find all three. The Swainson's and one
wood thrush were actually perched on the same branch next to each other when I
first located them. A nice comparison. Other good birds listed below:
Cooper's hawk
pileated woodpecker
eastern wood peewee
winter wren (first this fall)
red-eyed vireo-2
Philadelphia vireo-1
blue-headed vireo-2
black-throated green warbler- many, probably over 15
magnolia warbler-3
cape may warbler--2
hooded warbler-2
nashville warbler-1
common yellowthroat- 3
ovenbird-2
scarlet tanager- 2- one was actually singing
indigo bunting-2
