As expected, somewhat slow as it is between seasons...late for warblers, too
early for a good kinglet/Winter Wren/sparrow migration. However there was a
good Blue Jay migration. Unlike the majority of song birds that follow the
tree line, browse and road, Blue Jays seem to come up from the north side of
the mountain, and pass over this area on a very wide front...a more
southwestward direction.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Embreeville Marsh - Chester Co 9/25/04
From: Dave Kruel <accip(AT)INFIONLINE.NET>
Date: 26 Sep 2004 5:04pm
Hi All,
It was a really nice birding trek for Nancy Trout and I as we hit the
Embreeville Marsh, near Downingtown in Chester County yesterday. All the
cool birds made it a pleasure to trudge thru the mucky marsh and some
thick stubborn areas of phragmites.
Our first treat was an adult Bald Eagle that passed right overhead just a
few treetop levels high. Next were 2 Marsh Wrens and a Lincoln's Sparrow.
The highlight for me was to watch, at very close range, a Merlin hunt
dragonflies and then return to her perch and feed. This bird was hunting
just a few feet off the ground in a field right alongside the roadway. We
got to see her use the same perch three times, before she flew farther
into the marsh area.
The last bird that gave us a great thrill was an immature Bald Eagle that
flew near us and started out below treetop level.
?I was wondering if anyone who birds this area may know if Marsh Wrens
breed here?
Thanks much.

Subject: [PABIRDS] More Signs of Fall at Bake Oven Knob
From: "Hopkins,Jeffrey A" <HOPKINJA(AT)AIRPRODUCTS.COM>
Date: 26 Sep 2004 6:21pm
Athough the temperatures were in the mid-70's and I got a bit of a sunburn, the
birds were definitely fall-like at Bake Oven Knob (Lehigh). There were three
peregrine falcons before noon, including one who flew by tearing pieces off a
bird it caught in flight. Sharpies and Cooper's flew by in good numbers while
only a few broad-wings came by, most in the early morning. As would be expected
this time of year, a few kestrels, ospreys, and red-tails, and even a few
ravens were mixed in, but as of about 2 PM, no eagles.
The non-raptors also looked like fall is here. At one point, a female purple
finch perched in a bare tree on the lookout, and when she took off, she was
replaced by a gorgeous red-breasted nuthatch. Warbler-wise there were a few
yellow-rumps flitting around the lookout all day. Other warblers seen included
blackpoll, black-throated green, magnolia, and the best bird of the day, an
orange-crowned warbler. Flocks of blue jays were moving downridge all day, and
other migrants included a lone red-headed woodpecker, a couple of flickers, and
a fly-by string of double-crested cormorants.
A great day to be up on the mountain!

Date: 26 Sep 2004 7:46pm
Hello Pa Birders;
The hummingbird show at my house has been going strong for the past 3 weeks.
There have been at least 3 Ruby-throated visiting my flowers every few minutes
during this time. This morning the count dropped by one as it hit the picture
window during a chase and was killed. The specimen is in my freezer. Does
anyone know if this specimen would be wanted for a collection somewhere in the
state? During the busy period, none of the hummers has used any of my feeders.
They have all be feeding on the purple salvia, the red salvia and the pineapple
sage. Sorry I don't know the exact species of salvia as they were not marked
with anything other than sage and the color where I bought them in the spring.
All of the plants are still in high bloom and I am hoping for a late frost this
year. If a non-Ruby-thoated appears, I'll get the word out.

LeavesA little late but last Thursday I had a female Merlin on a telephone line
along RT-903 north of Jim Thorpe, Carbon County and a Raven in Hometown,
Schuylkill County flying over the Air Products plant later that day. Friday and
Saturday there where at least 2 Ospreys and on Saturday an adult Bald Eagle at
the Fish & Pay lake in Effort, Monroe County.
Today while shopping in Scranton, PA my wife and kids informed me there was a
sparrow like bird flying around in AC Moore. Assuming it to be one of the many
House Sparrows that frequent mall parking lots or home improvement stores I
didn't rush over to check it out. When I finally did however, it turned out to
be a White Throated Sparrow. Apparently it got in there yesterday some time.
Does anyone know who they could contact to get it out of there unharmed?

Subject: [PABIRDS] Silver Lake in Bucks CO
From: Doug Filler <d.filler(AT)VERIZON.NET>
Date: 26 Sep 2004 9:42pm
Greetings all,
I spent a few hours this afternoon and early evening at Silver Lake on the
platform and had a great view of some nice birds. As I was walking on the
boardwalk toward the platform I spotted a bird on a dead willow tree across the
creek, getting the scope on it I found it to be a male Kestrel. As I turned to
pick up the scope behind me on a snag sat a Merlin. The Merlin flew to a dead
tree near the platform where he preened for about 5 minutes giving me great
looks through the scope. When the Merlin took off it flew to the tree with the
Kestrel and for the next 5 minutes they played tag. At one point sitting so I
had both in the scope at the same time. Eventually the Merlin won the right to
the taller tree leaving the Kestrel to a short bush on the opposite side of the
creek. The Merlin would take off fly over the Kestrel and when she got close the
Kestrel would put both wings up but did not leave his spot. I had both birds in
view for about 30 minutes total, during that time I saw the Merlin catch two
birds, fly up to his tree and eat. The Kestrel also flew low into the marsh and
came up with a meal. Finally both birds took off and seemed to cricle around
before heading south over the treetops. Here is a list of all the birds seen
while there.
