Subject: [PABIRDS] Union County birding 9/26...New Berlin and The
Ordinance
From: Deuane Hoffman <corvuscorax(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 28 Sep 2004 7:57am
Howdy All,
I know this post is a bit late but a busy schedule has precluded me from
posting. I figure it has some value since posts from this area are few and far
between.
Saturday night found Carolyn and I staying over at her parents in New Berlin,
Union County. I took advantage of my location and made plans to bird State Game
Lands 252 locally known as "The Ordinance". This place gets it's name from the
hundreds of old ammo storage bunkers located on the property.
I started my day off by listening to a decent thrush flight over New Berlin.
From 0600-0630 I tallied ~625 calls to include 250 swainson's, 150 gray-cheecked
type, 100 hermit, 100 wood, 20 veery and 5 bicknell's type.
I arrived at SGL 252 at 0700 and birded exclusively in Union County, the
property is in both Lycoming and Union, since I was intent on working on my
Union County list. I birded for the next 2 1/2 hours along the dead end Alvira
Road that cuts southeast into the heart of the property.
My first stop proved fruitful as I was scanning along the edges of a pond a male
merlin flew overhead and shortly after interacted with two sharp-shinned hawks!
I walked the road and adjacent paths for over an hour counting common birds. I
was unable to locate many migrant flocks at all. Waiting for the sun to warm up
the land a bit more I made my way deeper into the area picking up a few things
here and there.
Finally around 0830 I hit a pot o' gold for birds at the terminus of the road
near the old cemetery and surrounding woods and edge. I birded this small area
for the next hour and nearly doubled my list for the day!
Notes on three common birds for the day. There was a huge movement of american
robins, blue jays and cedar waxwings on Sunday. I did not officially count but
if I had less than 5,000 robins, 1,000 blue jays and 1,000 waxwings I would be
shocked! Groups of each species were everywhere feeding on the abundant supply
of wild foods. I noticed that many of the wild grapes, spicebush, poison ivy,
sumac, russian olive and others were heavy with fruit.
I tallied a total of 77 species on the property and an additional 9 in the
county for a total of 86 species for the morning. I was most pleased with this
outing. If I was a local resident of the area The Ordinance would surely be a
regular birding location for me, it is a very interesting parcel with much in
the way of habitat diversity and exploring options available.
Selected list for the day.....
A few "northern" movers to include...ruby-crowned kinglet 2, red-breasted
nuthatch 3, yellow-bellied sapsucker 2, winter wren 1, lincoln's sparrow 2 and
white-throated sparrow 11
I had 3 vireo species with blue-headed 6, red-eyed 5 and philadelphia 2
Warblers were nicely represented, thanks to the frenzy of activity I found, with
19 species. Best of all included connecticut 1 and orange-crowned 1 also found
were, Nashville 5, parula 1, c yellowthroat 2, black-thr green 11,
chestnut-sided 1, yellow-rumped 26, magnolia 4, black-thr blue 2, am. redstart
3, bay-breasted 2, blackpoll 3, cape may 1, ovenbird 2, palm 3, black and white
3, tennessee 2 and blackburnian 4.
All in all it was a great morning at The Ordinance, looking forward to getting
back to check it out again soon. In my three trip to the property this year I
have tallied ~125 species to include 28 warbler species.
Take care and Good birding,
Raven

Flowers on my deck and those at Joan Silagy's house are also
in heavy bloom after this very benign growing season. Usually
the long bloomers are looking pretty tired by this time. My
last hummer was here in eastern Berks on 9/25, but all those
blooms might attract something late, if frost holds off long
enough.

freezer. Does anyone know if this specimen would be wanted
for a collection somewhere in the state? During the busy
period, none of the hummers has used any of my feeders. They
have all be feeding on the purple salvia, the red salvia and
the pineapple sage. Sorry I don't know the exact species of
salvia as they were not marked with anything other than sage
and the color where I bought them in the spring. All of the
plants are still in high bloom and I am hoping for a late
frost this year. If a non-Ruby-thoated appears, I'll get
the word out.

From: Rudy Keller <rkeller(AT)TEMPLE.EDU>

Here, too, spicebush and woodbine have been mainstays for the
fruit eaters. Deer have not browsed spicebush in recent
years, but that may be changing as the hoofed plague grows. I
notice now that young, tender shoots of spicebush are browsed
heavily in some places, so the deer may be suppressing
reproduction of this species as they do of many other native
plants. Woodbine would be gone if it weren't high up in the
trees. And only now have the game commissioners agreed to a
hunting regime expected to reduce the herd by 5%, if I'm not
mistaken on the number. It needs to be reduced more like 50%
in this area.

My flowers are going strong as well in my allotment garden here in
Haverford.I needed to clear my balcony of those planters that were
starting to look puny because I'm going to Vermont next week and don't
want to pay my cat sitter to water so many.I still have several Lady In
Red salvias,so if the hummer feeders spoil or go dry, there will be
something providing nectar.I'll fill them the day I leave. It's raining
heavily-remains of Jeanne.Hope her winds don't come-but they are
predicted.Maybe some interesting will get blown here or even a western
hummer!

Subject: [PABIRDS] Shorebird fallout near Lock Haven, Clinton Co.
9/28
From: Wayne Laubscher <wlaubsch(AT)CUB.KCNET.ORG>
Date: 28 Sep 2004 3:53pm
Today's rain resulted in a small shorebird fallout along the river road
a few miles east of Lock Haven in a flooded field across the road from
the "peacock farm". Around 1:30 this afternoon I saw the following:
Am. Golden Plovers- 4
Black- bellied Plovers- 4
L. Yellowlegs- 3
Gr. Yellowlegs- 4
Pectoral Sandpipers- 2
Caspian Terns- 2
The still wet- from- Ivan fields in the area are filling up again and
there is now a large amount of shorebird habitat around.
I found no birds at the South Avis fields today.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Lower Susquehanna Merlins: Lancaster County
From: Bob Schutsky <birdtrek(AT)EPIX.NET>
Date: 28 Sep 2004 4:59pm
Dear PABirders:
Since last Monday (20 Sep) Nancy and I have observed a male Merlin daily
near our home in Peach Bottom Village. It perches in the dead branches
at the top of a live Tulip Poplar tree, near the boat launch where Peach
Bottom Road crosses the railroad tracks. The tree is about 75 feet tall
and is directly along the river. We have seen it at various times of the
day, especially in the morning.
This afternoon I went upriver to Muddy Run and Wissler Run Park to see
if Jeanne produced anything of interest. I found a second Merlin, this
one a female. It was in a completely dead tree near the top of the ridge
overlooking the river and Wissler Run Park.
The only other birds of note at Muddy Run this afternoon were: 3 Bald
Eagles, numerous Double-crested Cormorants and Ring-billed Gulls,
several Great Blue Herons, and a Belted Kingfisher.
As of today there is still at least one Ruby-throated Hummingbird coming
to our home feeders and to my neighbor's red hibiscus on their deck.
Sincerely,
BOB SCHUTSKY
