Subject: [PABIRDS] Donegal Lake Willets - NO
From: Leonard Hess <lnlhess(AT)LHTC.NET>
Date: 29 Sep 2004 9:40am
Hi All,
Checked the growing mud flats at Donegal Lake in Westmoreland Co. this morning
between 8:00 & 9:00. The Willets are gone, and I suspect they left last
evening, as they flew off the mud bar and were calling loudly. The Killdeer
numbers are building, had 60+, also 2 Spotted Sandpipers, I Pectoral, and 1
Semi-palm Plover. Three Great Blue Herons were still present, but new since
yesterday were 5 Pied-bill Grebes.

Subject: [PABIRDS] dawn flights, Berks
From: Rudy Keller <rkeller(AT)TEMPLE.EDU>
Date: 29 Sep 2004 11:05am
I heard few flight calls from 9/20-23, no more than 30 on any
morning. On Friday, 9/24, there were many more. Conditions
were calm and warm, with some ground fog and a south wind
barely moving a few wisps of clouds across the sky. Cricket
calls seemed at a crescendo. From 6:00-6:30 a.m. (descent
time has gotten later as nights have gotten longer), I heard
about 725 flight calls, mostly in the latter 15 minutes. The
great majority were from Swainson's Thrush, with Wood Thrush
at ~50 calls the next most common, and smaller numbers of
calls from Gray-cheeked, Hermit, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and
unident. Within earshot or sight of the house later that
morning were Wood, Swainson's, Gray-cheeked, Hermit, robins,
bluebirds, Red-eyed Vireos, Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-breasted
Grosbeaks, all eating spicebush and woodbine fruits, plus
first-of-season Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (fighting a tanager
for woodbine berries), Brown Creeper, White-throated Sparrow,
as well as Red-breasted Nuthatch and Winter Wren. The place
was as busy as a Berks County diner after church lets out.
The next morning, 9/25, produced an echo of 9/24, with ~100
flight calls in the same sp. proportions as the previous day
during the same time period.
North winds from the previous day's frontal passage brought
more birds Monday, 9/27, when I again counted 725 calls from
6:00-6:30 a.m., mostly after 6:15. Species proportions were
about the same as on 9/24, with the vast majority of calls
coming from Swainson's, as you'd expect at this time. I'm
curious if anyone east of my location in Berks Co. heard much
movement during the above days.
I'm glad to hear that more and more people seem to be
listening for these birds and buying the cd-rom that
identifies their calls (www.oldbird.org). If you haven't
tried listening, do it soon. The annual fall thrush rush
won't last long past the first week of October. Hearing the
waves of calls in the dark is gratifying enough. Having a
Gray-cheek fresh out of the boreal forest drop out of the
twilit sky to perch and preen and call within 10 feet of your
lawn chair is an especially fine way to start any day.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Royal Tern - Peace Valley Bucks Co.
From: Matt Sharp <sharp(AT)ACNATSCI.ORG>
Date: 29 Sep 2004 11:33am
Just got a call from Frank Haas. August Mirabella found
a juv. Royal Tern at the south end of Lake Galena at Peace
Valley in Bucks co. The birds has been hanging out on the
fishing pier near the dam.
He also notes that the Gravel lot is closed and people will need
to head for the paved lot. I believe the gravel lot is on the
east side and the paved on the west but I am not certain.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Donegal Lake
From: Dick Byers <otusasio(AT)LHTC.NET>
Date: 29 Sep 2004 1:48pm
PA Birders,
I checked Donegal Lake about a half hour after Len this morning. I didn't
see the willets either, but had 2 greater yellowlegs and a lesser yellowlegs
feeding side by side. Also saw a solitary sandpiper, a semi-palmated sandpiper
and another species too far out to identify. It was a pale sand color about the
size of killdeer. The killdeer numbered 60. All these were gone before I
left. These are different birds than what Len saw earlier, so they seem to be
coming in and leaving with some regularity. None seem to be staying very long.
Apparently there isn't much there to eat.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Wednesday bird group Lock 12 & 15
From: Chuck Chalfant <chuckchalfant(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 29 Sep 2004 5:24pm
Greetings Pa. birders,
Not too much to report about today's outing at Locks 12
& 15 on lower Susquehanna River in S. Lancaster Co.Pa.
But I need the practice typing anyway so here goes.
As it turned out the weather was better than the
forecast so a lot of folks didn't show up and our group
wound up being just a quartet!
At our meeting spot at Musser's Store near the'Buck'
Pa. there was a nice little overgrown pasture with lots of
good sparrows in the brush, but it has since been brush-
hogged and is now a nice brushless wet pasture. We could depend on seeing Song,
Savannah, White-throat,
White-crowned, and occasionally Swamp sparrows there,
but no more. Did see Killdeer, Kestrel, Bluebird, Mallard.
We went to Lock 15 first, hoping to see some birds on
the water after the storm passed through last night but
only managed a few dbl.crested cormorant a pair of
Kingfisher, and at least 5 im. Bald Eagles a few Ring-
billed gulls and flock after high flying flock of South-bound
Canada Geese, a Pewee, a band of Goldfinch and an
early White-throated Sparrow.
The river was really rolling after last nights rain and we
walked up to the dam-breast to watch the turbulent muddy
water heading downstream. Did see an adult Bald Eagle
soaring with the Black &Turkey Vultures and one Red-tail
hawk. Best bird by far was a sedate ,close to the road but
none-the-less hard to see female Scarlet Tanager that
was picked out of the foliage by Glenn. Also saw Phoebe
and Kestrel along this stretch of Lock 15.
Muddy Run next week meet at boat launch.
Happy Trails,
Chuck Chalfant

Subject: [PABIRDS] Clarion Co- Lincoln's, etc.
From: Carole Willenpart <cwillenpart(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 29 Sep 2004 7:58pm
Hi All,
Yesterday we still had a black-billed cuckoo which my husband got a close
view of on his morning walk as well as the first RC kinglet that I spotted right
near the house later in the afternoon.
Today I almost didn't go for my walk after work but thankfully I changed my
mind and went. I came upon a small group of migrants all along just a short span
of roadway including-
palm warblers-3
blue-headed vireo-2
RC kinglet-2
downy
phoebes
On the other side of the road I could hear sparrows in the brushy thickets and
cattail area and found a Lincoln's sparrow, very good close views, and 5 swamp
sparrows, field sparrow and song sparrow. Still no white-throats. This area is a
brushy, old orchard and swampy area along a small creek that runs though a
valley with stripped fields on both sides.
I have been reading the info and listening to the calls on my flight call CD
from Oldbird and it is fascinating. Now I go out and listen every morning when
I get up at 6:00.Didn't hear much Monday and Tuesday but this morning I heard a
few more though still not many. I think they are mostly Swainson's and this
morning I heard clearly a different call that sounded very much like a
gray-cheeked. It's really just fascinating to listen even if you're not sure to
what! Also yesterday and today could hear a killdeer calling but it sounded
very high up. Always fun to learn something new.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Peace Valley Park - Bucks Co. (9/26 - 9/29)
From: August Mirabella <AugustMirabella(AT)AOL.COM>
Date: 29 Sep 2004 8:36pm
Today 9/29, a Juv. Royal Tern was seen at the dam end of the lake. It
was frequently sitting on the fishing pier closest to the dam on the southeast
side of the lake. It also sat on the fishing pier at Sailor's Point and late
in the day on the railing on the concrete walkway to the control tower at the
dam. It was seen catching fish several times.
Note that the gravel parking lot near the dam off Creek Rd. is closed due
to the erosion from the storm.
Also, seen was a flyby Red-headed Woodpecker which was first reported
Sunday. On Sunday it was seen flying NE over the dam along the shore on the NW
side of the lake. Today it was flying NE along the shore on the SE side of the
lake.
A Great Egret was also on the SE shore this morning. Three N.
Shoveler's, a Green-winged Teal, and a Ruddy Duck were on the lake at various
times
during the day.
The adult Bald Eagle continues and was also in view on and off all day as
usual. It sometimes roosts across the lake from the small parking area on
New Galena Rd. (the north lookout) but is best seen flying. If the gulls take
flight, look for the eagle as they see it before humans do.
Also, reported were one 1st yr. Lesser Black-backed Gull, Black-throated
Green and Pine Warblers, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and Lincoln's Sparrow.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Winter Wren/Franklin CO
From: Bob Keener <keenerb99(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 29 Sep 2004 9:03pm
Dear PA Birders, September 29, 2004
The Magnolia Warblers have been steady on most days
this last week, working the low underbrush, jewel
weed, blackberries and virginia creeper in the Heisey
Road Orchard. The Catbirds are feasting on the
v.creeper and ivy berries. A Brown Thrasher was
present today as well as numerous WT and Song
Sparrows. Several days there has been a RC Kinglet
doing his twithching thing with his wings. And today
the first of the season for me, a Winter Wren. He
likes to work the trunks of the apple trees and is
easy to get close to. Yesterday there were 2 A.
Redstarts as well.
Good Birding,
Bob Keener Shippensburg

I forgot to mention this in my last post but can anyone identify the band on
the Royal Tern's leg?
P.S.-does anyone know why all my messages get double spaced after I send
them?
