Subject: [PABIRDS] Whimbrel at S. Avis and other Clinton Co.
Shorebirds 9/29
From: Wayne Laubscher <wlaubsch(AT)CUB.KCNET.ORG>
Date: 30 Sep 2004 1:04am
Usually an unremarkable region for shorebirds, Clinton County has been
benefiting from shorebird fallouts as a result of this year's wet
weather. Yesterday afternoon I found a Whimbrel in a flooded tomato
field at South Avis. This represents a first Clinton Co. record.
Present along with the Whimbrel were:
Am. Golden Plovers
Black-bellied Plover
Semipalmated Plovers
Killdeer
Dunlin
Both Yellowlegs
Pectoral Sandpipers
Wilson's Snipe
Also nearby was a small flock of American Pipits.
The Whimbrel was well seen until around 5:30 p.m. when it apparently
hunkered down out of sight amongst the plant debris in the field. It
was not seen flying away and may still be there later this morning. I
will try to relocate it.
Also along the island/ river road east of Lock Haven were the following:
Ruddy Duck
Am. Golden Plovers
Dunlin
Pectoral Sandpipers
Killdeer
Thanks to Dave Rockey and Jeff Schaffer for the river road sightings and
to Joe Lipar for assistance with the S. Avis birds.

Subject: [PABIRDS] QUERY
From: Grant Stevenson <thunderbirdgs(AT)JUNO.COM>
Date: 30 Sep 2004 5:05am
HAS ANYONE SEEN A CROSSBILL? DID I MISS SOMETHING? I HEAR REPORTS OF
OTHER WINTER FINCHES. A RESEARCHER DID A STUDY OF CROSSBILLS, IN MAINE
(AND NY?), THAT SHOWED THEM APPEARING IN SEPT., EVEN EARLIER, WHEN WHITE
PINE (OR SPRUCE?) CONE OUT, AS WELL AS TAMARACKS. IN MY JOURNAL I HAVE
FOR 7:00 AM, 19 SEPT. 1993 A POSSIBLE RED CROSSBILL IN A "RED BERRIED
SHRUB" JUST BELOW CEDAR CREST COLLEGE'S CRESSMAN LIBRARY, ALLENTOWN,
LEHIGH COUNTY, A BUILDING WHERE, COUPLED WITH THE DORM NEXT DOOR, THERE
ARE, INDEED, LARGE TAMARACKS. IT HAD A LARGE, SQUARE HEAD WITH ROUNDED
EDGES AND SHORTER, STOCKIER BODY THAN A CARDINAL. HOWEVER, I DO NOT
REMEMBER DARKISH WINGS. LIGHTER RED THAN CARDINAL. PLEASE ADVISE.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Powdermill Banding Website Updated
From: Adrienne Leppold <quasar_5(AT)LYCOS.COM>
Date: 30 Sep 2004 7:58am
Dear Birders/Banders,
Photo highlights and text have been uploaded to the website covering 9/21-9/26
at http://www.westol.com/~banding/Fall2004_092104.htm
Yes, among the flurry of excitement surrounding the Black-headed Grosbeak, we
managed to band some other birds, more than worthy enough to mention on the
update. Highlights include the tale of Rufous Hummingbird N-43570 (caught at a
feeder at a nearby home just outside of Ligonier), our second Pileated
Woodpecker this summer (and since 2000), our first Ruby-crowned Kinglet, our
first hawk for the fall, and, well, a bunch of warblers.
Also, "recent banding totals", linked from the home page
http://www.westol.com/~banding/index.htm, have been updated with totals from
Tuesday and Wednesday (9/28-9/29) this week. 307 birds were banded Wednesday of
43 species. What a way to kick off our second fall banders workshop! Only 37
days in the past 43 years have we ever had totals exceeding 300!
Thanks for your continued interest,

Subject: [PABIRDS] Pokeberries/Deer/Phoebe(ind. Co.)
From: Marcy Cunkelman <cunkmar(AT)MICROSERVE.NET>
Date: 30 Sep 2004 9:55am
Hi All,
This morning was a cool fall morning and the birds were everywhere
in huge flocks-robins, cedar waxwings and mixed blackbirds...but I saw
something I never saw...this years fawn eating pokeberries...then a
phoebe landed on the deer's back(took a fly) and then sat less than 3
feet away while the deer ate the berries....There was another phoebe
nearby...heard woodthrushes calling yesterday morning/evening. Also
officially had my first white throated sparrow yesteday evening.
Chipping sparrow numbers are growing and yesterday had a honey brown
colored sparrow like bird with a forked tail...(I thought maybe a female
indigo bunting??). They are parachuting my ornamental grass plumes. I
am leaving some grassy areas in the yard higher for them to eat the
seeds. Sounds like a change coming this weekend on Saturday. I am
leading an outing at Conemaugh Dam and hope the warblers are still
around....and the rain stays away. Could be our first frost next week :-( .

During lunch, while listening to migrating towhees in the woods, I was
surprised to see three red-breasted nuthatches scarfing down sunflower seeds

Mike,
Start at Wildwood Lake, which is in North Harrisburg. When there, at the
Nature Center, try to obtain a copy of "The Susquehanna Wildlife and Birding

This may be your best bet for information on birding your area.

1 Brown Thrasher
4 Gray Catbirds
The swamp is a mess, the high water took out a beaver dam (I think), and there
is land, solid enough for rails, but not solid enough for people. I walked for
an hour and a half and only covered about 1 acre. If you want to try for rails
and want HARD exercise, I think this is the weekend, but it will not be easy.
even with Chest Waders , I was a muddy mess when I finished from falling and
slopping in the 6 inches of soft ground in the sedges, grass, cattails, and
rushes. The water looked like it was up at least another 2 to 3 feet last week
and the ground is not easy to walk on, I got stuck at least 3 times. Still, I
did see 4 rails, 1 that looked very good and ran but didn't flush. Yellow Rail
could be a possibility this weekend.
If you come up, let me know, if I can meet you I will try again - even though my
legs are really complaining at present and telling me NO!!
Let me know,
John Fedak
Bradford
PS It will have to be a Sunday as Archery comes in Sat. and Duck Season starts
during the week. Also, the swamp is for sale 60+ acres if you have about $40000
burning a hole in your pocket - Any western PA Conservationists reading this???

Subject: [PABIRDS] American Avocet at the Washingtonville PPL plant,
Montour Co., 9/30
From: Wayne Laubscher <wlaubsch(AT)CUB.KCNET.ORG>
Date: 30 Sep 2004 10:39pm
Late this afternoon I found a winter-plumaged American Avocet at the
Washingtonville (Montour) PPL plant ash basin. Hopefully it will linger
a bit as many of the unusual birds that are found there have a penchant
for being one-day-wonders. Other birds of note there:
Green Heron
Gr. Yellowlegs
Semipalmated Plovers
Killdeer
Dunlin
Pectoral Sandpipers
Semipalmated Sandpipers
Least Sandpipers
