[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Lancaster County - Connecticut Warbler From: Tom Raub <t.raub(AT)VERIZON.NET> Date: 3 Oct 2004 5:49am Late yesterday afternoon I had a Connecticut Warbler along with Common Yellowthroats, a Nashville Warbler and a Northern Waterthrush in a park on the edge of Strasburg Boro! I was pishing a bit and the Yellowthroats and Nashville responded to that but when I did a "lip-smacking" noise, the Connecticut came up out of some weeds and into a small tree offering me very good and extensive looks. I had time to study this bird after the surprise of a hooded bird with outstanding eye rings popped up. Bigger than a Yellowthroat. I had good looks at the bill shape/size and pink legs. For what it's worth, the bird completely ignored pishing but seemed upset about the lipsmacking sound. Which is why it stayed in the open for a minute or so. The Yellowthroats and Nashville ignored the smacking but responded to pishing! After the bird went back down I could see (seeing movement, without actually seeing the bird) it on the ground feeding among the weeds/wildflowers. I nice study of behavior. This is a small area in a passive park with a vernal pond, boggy/wetland areas, cattails, weeds/wildflowers that border a line of trees with lots of bushes and cover. It's always been a nice magnet for migrating birds despite how small it is. And between the people that view it as "a bunch of damn weeds", and the development going in I don't know how long it will last! Tom Raub Strasburg, PA
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Re: [PABIRDS] Warbler ID From: Matt Sharp <sharp(AT)ACNATSCI.ORG> Date: 3 Oct 2004 7:24am The photo posted by Bob, appears to be a fairly typical Myrtle but with a yellowish wash on the throat. The auriculars look dark and well defined, and the pale supercilium is distinct. Also the tail seems to have the appropriate amount of white. Though definitely not certain, I would say the bird not a HY female, which I think is more likely to show a yellowish throat in Myrtle. THe yellow on the throat of what otherwise seems to be a fairly typical myrtle is interesting and I am not sure what the best expanation is other than good old variation. If there were other intermediate characters I would suspect hybridization. However given the presence of a single character on an otherwise typical individual I do wonder about past intergradation with Audubon's and whether this could cause a bird to show only single feature of a near relative. Regarding Conn. vs Mourning, I have always felt that the most "obvious" difference is overall structure with Conn. being stockier than Mourning. I think of the difference as similar to an Ovenbird vs a Yellowthroat. This is of course a very subjective difference though on quick views of a bird as it dissapears into cover it is still apparent. I have unfortunately not had enough experience with Connecticut to get into subtle plumage details. I think it is worth noting the differences in migration patterns however with Mournings generally clearing out earlier in fall than Connecticuts so that any Oporornis seen now may be slightly more likely to be a Conn than a Mourning. In a couple more weeks I might even go so far to say that any Oporornis seen should be looked at very closely as it would be almost as likely to be MacGilivray's as it would a Mourning or Conn. From skimming regional listservs it seems that Conn Warbler were reported less frequently this fall in the regular time-frame than in past with a scattering of reports turning up in the latter half of Sept. I think the baby boy might be taking his morning nap, so maybe I will try and go find a real connecticut rather than a hypothetical one. Matt

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] American Avocet, Franklin County 10/3 From: Daniel Snell <dan_snell(AT)HOTMAIL.COM> Date: 3 Oct 2004 6:04pm At 1:15 p.m. Regina Reeder and I discovered a winter plummaged American Avocet at Greencastle Reservoir. The resting bird was observed along the water's edge with several Killdeer. DIRECTIONS: From Interstate 81 exit 5, proceed on Route 16 towards waynesboro for 1/4 mile to Grindstone Hill Road. Make a left and drive approximately one mile to Reservoir Road. Turn Right and watch for the fenced in reservoir impoundment on the left side. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Sun. at Pennypack Trust Montgomery Co Pa. From: JoAnnR36(AT)AOL.COM Date: 3 Oct 2004 4:16pm Sort of gloomy and only the small group of Sharpshins interacting with each other made it a fine morning. The sharps eventually spiraled up to circle over our heads and then stream away. We also spotted an osprey and a cooper's hawk on the wing. The hedgerow was the most active grassland spot with Buntings and palm warblers in with the bluebirds and yellow rumped warblers. Spotted a Yellow bellied sapsucker and a black and white warbler. Sparrows were secretive in the native grasses and I think a scope would have been helpful to keep our distance. We did have a huge flock of noisy grackles in the trees above the pond and they were eating everything! Phoebes on every available post. JoAnn Raine

It went from there to perch in the Butterfly bush. I observed this bird several time throughout the afternoon. It would visit the feeder and then perch in the nearby Butterfly Bush. There it would preen or scratch or just sit. The longest it stayed perch in the bush was 15 min. This is the latest record that I have for a hummingbird. Previous dates were 2003- 8/25 2002- 8/31 2001- 9/9 This is also the first hummingbird that I have had at the feeder since 9/6/04 Linda Rowan Bristol PA lrowan(AT)localnet.com

Perfect weather! Breezy conditions in the treetops made warbler finding difficult, but light in the edge cuttings. Good variety and a hit of things to come as this area is excellent during October for Winter Wrens, kinglets, White-throated Sparrows, followed by high number of junco and robin migrants. Visitors should be aware this area is heavily hunted and it is presently deer hunting, so essential to know the laws requiring orange, even for non-hunters. Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrows, Indigo Buntings, Yellowthroats, Towhees and many unidentified as it was breezy and they did not want to pop up. On the return walk, I wised up (although a little late) and got to the west end of the field and had three Lincoln Sparrows come out, apparently migrating. Song Sparrows (about 3) stayed in although I suspect a lot of the unidentified birds were Song Sparrows and maybe some Indigo Buntings. Birds would occasionally fly from one area of the field to another but not give a good look. A productive as the sorghum is, it not ripe yet. Thanks are due to the PA Game Commission for planting this wonderful crop! It has attracted wintering birds in the past, and this may help offset fields lost to development off the mountaintop. I hoped something would come in with the front. Nothing did! The same birds seem to have been there for about a week with the exception of the Willets reported by Len Hess. The birds that are there are certainly feeding actively. I suspect they are storing up for future migration. New mudflats continue to be exposed as the water level falls and I suspect the food supply must be good since this lake has not been lowered for a few years to the best of my knowledge.
