Subject: [PABIRDS] Monroe County Snipe Hunt -110 species
From: Sherri LaBar <SherriL(AT)SPECTRAGASES.COM>
Date: 5 Oct 2004 7:51am
On Saturday, the 2nd, 4 teams participated in the 2nd annual Monroe County
Snipe Hunt. This is a 24 hour contest to see how many birds can be found in
the county, and benefits local conservation organizations.
Afterwards, teams met at Kettle Creek Environmental Ed. Center to tally up
the results. No one found any snipe, but the winning team found 96 species,
despite not being able to find any shorebird flocks. The other teams each
added some unique species, for a total of 110 combined in the county.
Unfortunately, I left the species list in a teammate's car, but I will post
when I retreive it.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Hummer continues in Bristol
From: Linda Rowan <lrowan(AT)LOCALNET.COM>
Date: 5 Oct 2004 8:27am
The hummingbird continues at the feeder and flowers in my yard in Bristol
Boro. I observed it this morning from 6:35 to 7:10. It came very close
to me as I stood in my driveway, but the light at that time is not great.
After a talk with Arlene from Easton, she feels fairly sure that the bird
I am observing is a Ruby Throat. Arlene still has Ruby Throats at her
home which is north of my location. However, we will have to see what
happens tonight after this cold front and possible frost pushes down.
I am going to attempt to take digital pictures today after work. I know
this is a difficult job with an automatic camera.

I'd just like to reinforce what others have said, and urge everyone
to keep their eyes open for unusual hummers -- leave your feeders up
this month and next, and now that the last rubythroats are departing,
scrutinize the remaining hummers for oddballs, especially Selasphorus
species or calliopes. Most of our western hummingbird reports come
from early October through late November, but I suspect many of the
birds are present much earlier, their presence masked by all the
rubythroats.
With Selasphorus, the big clue is going to be orangish on the base
of the tail feathers and rump, not a buffy or cinnamon wash on the
flanks, which rubythroats can show. The calliopes are tiny,
short-billed, pot-bellied hummers -- but so are many of the last
remaining rubythroats, many of which appear to be very late
fledglings that average smaller and shorter-billed than most. The big
clue with a calliope is its habit of cocking the tail almost straight
up in the air while feeding.
So far this fall, I'm aware of two western hummer reports -- a
one-day sighting in Erie County of a Selasphorus, and a rufous that
the folks from Powdermill banded in Ligonier Sept. 21. More will be
coming in the next week or so, I'm sure. There are now several
licensed hummingbird banders in the state working with western
species (me, the Powdermill crew, Nick Pulcinella, Wayne Laubscher)
and we're anxious to get reports.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Brauning lecture in Hershey
From: Sally Zaino <szaino(AT)EARTHLINK.NET>
Date: 5 Oct 2004 1:27pm
Hi, just a reminder:
On Wednesday, October 6th at 7:00 PM there will be a lecture entitled
"The Peregrine Falcon - A Saga of Recovery" at the Hershey Public
Library. The speaker will be Dr. Daniel Brauning, Supervisor of the
Wildlife Diversity Program, Pennsylvania Game Commission. His
presentation, sponsored by The Manada Conservancy and Derry Township
Parks and Recreation, will provide a broad overview of the decline of
the peregrine falcon, recovery efforts and results of recent
research. It will also include the dramatic results of a satellite
telemetry study. The Peregrine, the world's fastest bird, has gone
from the brink of extinction across the globe to a slow recovery
thanks to monumental efforts on the part of many. Dr. Brauning has
been involved in falcon recovery for over 20 years, and currently
visits nest sites across the state. An expert on Pennsylvania birds,
he is the editor of the Atlas of the Breeding Birds in Pennsylvania
(1992) and co-author, with Gerald McWilliams, of The Birds of
Pennsylvania (2000). The Manada Conservancy is a non-profit, land
trust organization, dedicated to the rpeservation of the natural,
historic, agricultural and scenic resources of the Manada and Swatara
Creek Basins in Dauphin and Lebanon Counties. The lecture is free
and open to the public. Those who wish to attend should register by
calling Derry Township Parks and Recreation at 533-7138.

One of my fifth grade students spotted two white-throated sparrows (tan

North Hills School District in Allegheny County. We usually have 3 to 5
white-throats that are regularly seen throughout the fall and winter seasons.
