Subject: [PABIRDS] Hummer in Bristol
From: Linda Rowan <lrowan(AT)LOCALNET.COM>
Date: 7 Oct 2004 8:04am
Greetings
Observed the hummer many times from 6;40 - 7:10 AM. Actively moving
between the feeder and the pruple butterfly bush. I could stand in the
driveway within 3 feet of the feeder and it still came to the feeder.
Had a good look as it sat in the butterfly bush. Wings seem as ong as the
tail when the bird is at rest. Saw it stretch and fan it's tail. Seems
that the 2 outer tail feathers on each side have white tips.
Am I correct in thinking that hummers migrate at night like other
songbirds? Just wondering if I don't see the hummer early one morning if
I should assume it has moved on.

Linda,
The assumption was usually made that hummers migrated only by day,
since so many are seen passing lookouts like Hawk Mountain. But
several times in spring I've had none in the evening, and one at the
feeder at daybreak, so I suspect they may be more flexible about that
than we thought.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Conejohela Flats - what remains?
From: Mike Tanis <gmtanis(AT)SNIP.NET>
Date: 7 Oct 2004 10:16am
Ted Drozdowski and I are hoping to get out for a full day of birding this
weekend in Dauphin/Lancaster/Lebanon counties. Not having seen any recent
reports, I was wondering about the status of the Conejohela Flats. Do the
Flats even exist anymore, after last Tuesday's flooding? Is it going to be
worth our while to haul a canoe around with us all day in order to go out
on the river? The Susquehanna still looked pretty high when I drove over
the Turnpike bridge last Saturday afternoon.
I saw Gerry Boltz's interesting report on Mt. Pleasant Rd of a couple of
days ago. Does anyone know of other particularly productive
Lancaster/Lebanon county farm fields/meadows for Horned Lark, Am. Pipit,
and sparrows?
Any other help you could provide with uncommon species of waterfowl or
feeder birds we could add to our day would be wonderful.
Thanks everyone,
Mike Tanis

Greetings birders,
Right at this moment I have a single "PINE SISKIN" at our feeder
in Gap Penna. Lancaster Co. Not part of a flock as is usual in late
winter here. There are a few goldfinch around also but they have
been here at feeder for weeks.
Happy trails,

Subject: [PABIRDS] Bristol Hummer -- no show
From: Linda Rowan <lrowan(AT)LOCALNET.COM>
Date: 7 Oct 2004 5:53pm
I observed this evening for an hour and did not see this hummer who visited like
clockwork. We may never know if it was a vagrant. If it appears tomorrow
morning, I'll post it.
