Greetings Pa. Birders,
Just for curiosity I went back to this mornings great sparrow
birding spot to see if any remained, a few Song sparrows and a
few goldfinch were all that were left of that nice bunch of birds.
I think its called "MIGRATION". I still may give it a quick look
tomorrow morning.

Mary & I saw our first fox sparrow yesterday. We had a pine siskin at our
feeders today. I think this is about the earliest we have had these birds
here.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Dickcissel(s), Northampton County
From: Davilene(AT)AOL.COM
Date: 8 Oct 2004 2:23pm
This morning I found a dickcissel (adult female, I believe) in the fields
near the house. It flew to the top of a sunflower stalk and was joined on
either
side by a common yellowthroat (imm male) and an orange-crowned warbler. This
bird was subsequently refound by Dave De Reamus. Then Jason Horn and I found
what looks to be a second dickcissel. This one had a much stronger yellow malar
stripe, but both birds have lots of yellow on their breasts.
Re: sparrows
The fields were jumping this morning. I hate to put numbers to species
because it's impossible to be correct when you're one person walking through 27
acres of habitat. I'd estimate that I saw 20+ Lincoln's, 50+ swamp's, 50+
Savannah's, 20 or more chipping sparrows, 25+ field's, 50+ song's, and numerous
whitethroats and whitecrowned's. Other species seen in the fields were a few
indigo
buntings, palm warblers, and a blue-headed vireo. The trees along the edge of
the yard held ruby-crowned kinglets and yellow-rumped's.
A small flock of chimney swifts and rough-winged swallows flew overhead.
Good birding.

Date: 8 Oct 2004 11:32am
Greetings Pa. birders
Went to look for migrating sparrows at one of my spots near home
that is usually good for field birds but this morning it was more than good.
My intention was to possibly find a LINCOLNS SPARROW and
I found 3, and as a real bonus a MALE CONNECTICUT WARBLER.
The location is near Simmontown Pa. Lancaster Co. Both of these birds
are my first for this township. In 2 hr. walk around cut cornfields fence-rows
and a good weedy swale I checked off 49 species.
Only the highlights I'll list below.
Sharp-shinned hawk
Red-tailed hawk
Am. Kestrel
Black-billed Cuckoo (juvenile)
Carolina & House Wrens
Both Kinglets
Mockingbirds (many)
Thrasher
Yellow-rumped Warbler (several groups)
Palm Warblers (3)
CONNECTICUT WARBLER (male)
Common Yellow-throated warbler
E. Towhee
SPARROWS
Chipping (many)
Field 6
Savannah
Song (many)
LINCOLN'S (3 -1st of fall)
Swamp (3)
White-throated (many)
White-crowned (6 1st of fall)
Indigo Bunting
Purple Finch (1st of fall)
House Finch (6)
Am Goldfinch (large groups)
I'm going back tomorrow to see how many are still there.
Happy Trails,

Allegheny Front Hawk Watch
Maintained and operated by the Allegheny Plateau Audubon Society.
The Allegheny Front Hawk Watch is located on the Somerset / Bedford Co.
border. It is located within 6.4km of Central City at an elevation of 820
meters, which may be the highest elevation Pa. hawk watch. The high
elevation, while producing many eye level birds, also produces frequent
days
of fog. Monitoring has occurred since 1989. Best winds are from the
East.
The site is manned 7 days a week for 4 months in the fall and 3 months in
the
spring. Parking is available at the site and special parking is available
for
the handicapped.

Subject: [PABIRDS] White Crowned Sparrow and Pine Siskin(IND.CO)
From: Marcy Cunkelman <cunkmar(AT)MICROSERVE.NET>
Date: 8 Oct 2004 8:22pm
Hi All,
Wha a beautiful fall day....if it has to be fall this was the
perfect day...Lots of birds this morning all thru the yard flying
EVERYWHERE. Robins and cedar waxwings were chasing each other away from
the Black Gum Tree berries...they are pretty well gone now and many of
them are on the ground. Flickers and pileateds were calling and flying
thru the yard....black throated green and yellow rumped warblers were
in the yard.
After covering my flowers, saving them from 2 frosts, they are bright
and waiting for the HUMMERS to show up....Last one was Oct 1st at the
Lady in Red Salvias..Both kinglets were here today and while Merle and
Karen Jackson were here we heard a pine siskin(maybe 2). It disappeared
in the birch tree and we couldn't find it. I thought I heard one
yesterday, but couldn't see it..it wasn't coming at the feeders, but the
goldfinches have been eating the seeds from the purple coneflowers,
gloriosa daisies and the Jerusalem artichokes and not using the feeders
as much.
Late this afternoon I saw a white crowned sparrow was in the shrubs by
the deck and later was in the creek. I couldn't get a good enough look
at it to check the species. Still have a small flock of mixed ages of
chipping sparrows.
Not much flying overhead...1 TV was the only thing I saw today...
Sounds like some rain coming tomorrow so maybe that will bring
something new in.
Marcy
