[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Clarion Co.- sparrows and owls From: Carole Willenpart <cwillenpart(AT)YAHOO.COM> Date: 9 Oct 2004 9:14am Hi All, Not too many birds over the past week but on my walk last evening found a nice group of sparrows up the road. Two Lincoln's sparrows with several song sparrows and a swamp sparrow all ended up perched close together in a small tree, made for a very nice size and plumage comparison. Easy to see the smaller size of the Lincoln's. I am starting to learn to recognize their different chip notes also. Some white-crowned sparrows and many white-throated and field sparrows as well. Also in the yard today were RC kinglets and several black-throated greens in the morning and seeing more meadowlarks passing through. Last evening while cooking out on the deck we saw a large bird fly into a small walnut above the barn and it was the great horned owl! It was only 6:40 and still pretty light. We had some great views as it sat and looked around but of course by the time I raced around to get the scope it flew just as I had it ready. Still a cool thing to see while cooking your dinner! Hoping for a good weekend, Carole Willenpart Sligo, Clarion CO. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? vote.yahoo.com - Register online to vote today!
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Lincolns Sparrow @ Red Fox From: Chuck Chalfant <chuckchalfant(AT)COMCAST.NET> Date: 9 Oct 2004 10:14am Greetings Pa Birders, Some of the good birds of yesterday seem to remain overnight. Saw 1 LINCOLNS SPARROW,1 junco, 1 swamp sparrow, plenty of white-throated sparrows, a few white-crowned sparrows, and many goldfinch, and 1 palm warbler. But the highlight of the morning was getting to observe 2 juvenile RED FOX playing, mock battling, and cavorting as only young fox know how. They were also eating insects (perhaps crickets or grass-hoppers) and occasionally trying their hand at mousing, but they were mostly just playing around. They still had a lot of energy after a night of hunting, one would lay down, curl up then the other would stalk around and pounce on the one on ground and then chase each other until they tired of it. Never saw the adult, dog or vixen, so am not sure if they are on their own or not at this time of year. I probably watched them undetected for a half hour but then they finally perked up their ears and honed right in on me and it was time for them to go into hiding in the un-cut cornfield nearby. A nice way to spend the early morning. Happy Trails Chuck Chalfant Gap Penna. E. Lancaster Co.

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Possible Snow Bunting - Lycoming Co. From: Rosemary Lunz <rlunz58(AT)CHILITECH.NET> Date: 9 Oct 2004 5:56pm This afternoon there was a cream-colored bird among the flock of house sparrows. I assumed it was a Snow Bunting, but the coloration was much paler than that shown in Peterson Field Guides. So I checked the National Geographic Field Guide ( Third Edition ) and it most resembles McKay's Bunting. Now, I know the storms can blow birds off their course, but from Alaska???? I am really puzzled on this one. There was no black on this bird at all. Is it an albino? Or are the colors off because of molting? Well, whatever it is, it is a life bird for this backyard. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Chambers Lake Area, Hibernia Park From: Rick Robinson <birder97(AT)COMCAST.NET> Date: 9 Oct 2004 9:23pm On Thursday morning, Lincoln's sparrow showed up and (1) was still there on Sat; also on Thursday, an American bittern was "frozen" along the shore. Savannah, white-crowned, white-throated, swamp, song, and a few field sparrows were joined by a handful of palm and yellow-rumps. A coot was swimming around the log on which three wood duck were sitting. A lone Coop was soaring with a pair of turkey vultures on Sat morning. Rick Robinson Chester County
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Black-capped Chickadees? From: Bill Etter <better(AT)NETCARRIER.COM> Date: 9 Oct 2004 10:02pm Nockamixon State Park, in upper Bucks Co, is in the hybrid chickadee zone. I don't even assign them to a species anymore, some look good for one or the other, but based on everything I've read, i'm pretty sure there are few, if any, pure chickadees around here. Most chickadees here look more like Carolina, but sound more like Black-capped. This afternoon, however, i had a bird that i feel comfortable calling a Black-capped. Rougher looking, darker, and more colorful beneath, with bright bold wing bars. This was my best candidate for Black-capped here since Jan '02, when they made a brief irruption into this area. Within an hour of that bird, I found 2 more chickadees in a mixed flock that i'm also confident calling Black-caps! One of the birds vocalized with a slow harsh dee-dee-dee-dee. So i'm wondering, is anyone else finding true Black-caps in areas where they usually don't occur? I've noticed two other reports from Bucks Co in the last few days. What about other areas? I'm personally glad to see these visitors... See ya, Bill Etter Lake Nockamixon Bucks County

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Morgan Hill, Nazareth area, and Little Gap From: Dave DeReamus <becard(AT)FAST.NET> Date: 9 Oct 2004 11:29pm Hi all, While working in my backyard this afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised to find a pretty significant Kinglet fallout (for my yard, anyway). I conservatively estimated 15 Ruby-crowneds and 3 Golden-crowneds working the trees and flycatching from the wires. I also had my first Red-breasted Nuthatch visiting the feeder. At the flooded field along Christian Springs Road (just south of Nazareth), one Black-bellied Plover continued. The Lehigh Valley Audubon Society's field trip to Little Gap (just north of Danielsville on the Northampton / Carbon County line) for raptors was pretty much a bust due to fog, but we still managed to chalk up an immature Red-headed Woodpecker in addition to Eastern Phoebe, Red-breasted Nuthatch (heard only), Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglet, Cedar Waxwing, Red-eyed Vireo, Eastern Towhee, Dark-eyed Junco, and White-throated Sparrow.
