[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Hummingbird, Snyder Co. From: Mick Brown <Browncreeper1(AT)AOL.COM> Date: 15 Oct 2004 11:29am This morning (10/15) as I stepped out onto my front porch I was shocked to hear and then see a hummingbird at some flowers! It was small, somewhat chunky-looking, and had a definite rusty tinge, but not as much as a adult male rufous or Allen's (Sibley guide). It was humming loudly (if that means anything?). It was a very brief encounter as my wife opened the front door and inadvertantly spooked it. I then had to leave to take her to work. I have the day off so I'll be staking out the yard all day and will update. I have feeders out but did not see it use them, only the flowers. Mick Brown Middleburg, Pa. Snyder County

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Bradford Dam - Folly Road Access 7am - 9am From: Gail Johnson <birdhusker(AT)AOL.COM> Date: 15 Oct 2004 2:34pm This is a Warrington city park, but I didn't catch the name. Farm fields, playing fields, etc. this access, leading to streams and forest. Birds everywhere, mostly familiar ones. Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawk chasing crows - playing fields on west side of Folly. Goldfinches, house finches, white-throated and song sparrows, Yellow-rumped warblers, mockingbirds, cardinals, chickadees, titmice, WB Nuthatches, mourning doves, common grackles, Eastern Phoebes Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers 2 field sparrows 2 swamp sparrows 1 Snow Goose in the middle of 700 Canada geese feeding in field just east of Folly Rufous-sided Towhee (heard only) I love to start the morning like this. Gail Johnson, Warminster
[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Purple finches, Pine siskins, Northampton County From: Davilene(AT)AOL.COM Date: 15 Oct 2004 3:59pm This morning, Friday, the 15th, a few purple finches and pine siskins joined the goldfinches and other birds at feeders in the front yard. Yesterday there were, similarly, a few purple finches at feeders in the back yard. Yellow-rumped warblers remain plentiful along the edge of the yard, and ruby-crowned kinglets are there regularly now. The fields remain very active. Today there were 9 sparrow species (song, swamp, Lincoln's, field, chipping, whitethroated, whitecrowned, vesper, Savannah) in the sunflower/foxtail millet/pigeon mix where the dickcissel was last weekend. That bird is no longer here to my knowledge. Palm warblers are around here and there in some of the fields and small flocks of red-winged blackbirds are moving in and out. I'm seeing one or more northern harriers every day now, with 3 being the most I've seen at one time. All of them to date have been young birds. Good birding. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Pittsburgh From: "Kate St. John" <KStJohn(AT)WQED.ORG> Date: 15 Oct 2004 7:03pm This afternoon my friend Karen & I found a dead Yellow-billed Cuckoo on campus at Univ of Pittsburgh. It looked like it had been hit by a peregrine and fell to the ground before the falcon could catch it. (The adult peregrines at Pitt never land on the ground, so if they miss retrieving a bird after they punch it, they let it fall.) Neither Karen nor I are forensic experts so we couldn't tell when it was killed, but its feathers & body were still in good condition so I would guess it was recent, maybe even today. Cold front came through today. Windy. Brrrrrr. Kate St. John, Pittsburgh
