Subject: [PABIRDS] Volunteers help transform state gameland into bird
watching area (fwd)
From: Deuane Hoffman <corvuscorax(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 16 Oct 2004 12:30am
Howdy All,
I don't know about you but when I read the email Carmen sent about this I did
not have a link. I went to the newspaper's website and tracked the story down. I
do agree, nice story. I have been to The Muck many times and never fail to be
impressed by it. The number of breeding marsh wrens alone make it worth going
back! Nice to see locals taking an interest in this amazing place...big time
KUDOS to Bob Ross and his crew up there in Canyon Country!
Volunteers help transform state gameland into bird watching area
Bird watchers, duck hunters, and boaters can now access an excellent habitat
just outside of Wellsboro.
Volunteers from the Tiadaghton Audubon Society, with the help of the
Pennsylvania Game Commission, spent the summer building structures at State Game
Lands 313 in Delmar Township, Tioga County.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Changes to the Conejohela Flats
From: Deuane Hoffman <corvuscorax(AT)COMCAST.NET>
Date: 16 Oct 2004 3:45am
Howdy All,
Andy McGann and I were out a few days ago, Wednesday 10/13, to the Conejohela
Flats, Lancaster County. We noted 6 shorebird species, 20 killdeer, 6 bb plover,
1 least sandpiper, 3 dunlin, 2 gr yellowlegs and 1 ls yellowlegs. Other species
of interest were 1 flyover Am. pipit, 1 yellow-bellied sapsucker and 1 flyover
pine siskin.
I have seen a few reports from The Flats in recent weeks but I have not seen
anyone, including myself, comment on the changes brought about by the high water
levels caused by the onslaught of the two tropical systems that dumped up to 10
inches of rain in our area.
The blind on Avocet Point survived the high water even though water levels came
halfway, approximately 3 feet, up the blind. Avocet Point itself is a different
place however. The bar has been narrowed but lengthened considerably. A long
curving point extends towards the Lancaster County shoreline. The shore along
the blind has been severely undercut, so much so that the depths drop to 3 feet
plus within a few feet from shore. Most notable is the creation of a permanent
bar located just downstream of Avocet Point. This bar, yet unnamed, is as large
as Avocet Point and provides more quality habitat. There has always been a small
bar in this location at times of low water levels but nothing like what exists
now.
Up at Gull Island things have also changed. The old blind is now in a thorough
state of disrepair, plans for a replacement next spring are in the works. Most
notable at Gull Island has been the filling in of the channel that had separated
Gull Island. This channel which was 5 or so feet wide and up to 6 feet deep,
trust me I know from experience, is now GONE and Gull Island is once again
connected. Also, the cove has been filled in and the curving tip has been cut
off.
Over the entire area a deep layer of river sand has been deposited, up to
multiple feet deep in places and The Flats have been scoured nearly clean of
pesky successive plant life like goldenrod, burdock and worst of all purple
loosestrife. I feel that the flood has set the plant growth back a least 2 or 3
years.
In my opinion the flood waters from Ivan and Jeanne have proven beneficial to
the health of The Flats. Luckily our good blind stayed put, or derelict blind
now has no choice but to be replaced and the area as a whole has fresh new
habitat. I am looking forward to a few more times out this season, hoping for a
seasonal record tying 32nd species of shorebird, and with much anticipation to
the 2005 season!
Take care and Good birding,
Raven

Subject: [PABIRDS] Waterbird count
From: JerryMcW(AT)AOL.COM
Date: 16 Oct 2004 4:02pm
Saturday, October 16, 2004
Waterbird count:
Location: Sunset Point at Presque Isle State Park
Time: 7:20 AM to 10:20 AM
Weather: variably cloudy, temp. 45 F, wind WSW to 30 mph, waves about four to
five feet.
Comments: Movement was light this morning with Lesser Scaup being the
primary bird recorded. All ducks were moving west while Common Loons were
flying in
all directions, though a number of them were flying in a southerly direction
from Canada. I missed recording a flock of about 80 Brant that probably flew
past Sunset Point, by leaving Sunset and going to Gull Point when I saw them
flying from a westerly direction. The Brant flew over Gull Point at 11:00 and
then they settled down on the lake in a tight raft for about an hour or so
before flying off.
Waterbirds recorded:
Wood Duck-1
American Wigeon-4
American Black Duck-2
Northern Pintail-3
Green-winged Teal-2
Lesser Scaup-112
Long-tailed Duck-2
Common Loon-19
Unidentified loon-2
Double-crested Cormorant-1
Sanderling-1
Dunlin-6
Other bird flying over the lake:
Unidentified passerine-1

Subject: [PABIRDS] Huge Grackle Flock--Allegheny
From: Mike Fialkovich <mpfial(AT)EARTHLINK.NET>
Date: 16 Oct 2004 6:36pm
Hi,
While putting some things away in my shed in the backyard today, I heard a large
flock of Common Grackles coming my way. Suddenly, a flock of 1,000 plus
grackles flew over, some landing in the trees behind my yard. They didn't stay
long, and flew off with the remainder of the flock.
I heard them in the golf course across the road. I went over and had to work
through the thick line of trees that separate the road from the golf course to
see them. Looking across the green, I saw the great mass of birds in the trees.
They flew down to the ground to search for acorns under the oak trees. I
searched through them for a stray yellow-headed or Brewer's (wishful thinking),
but could not come up with anything mixed in other than a few European
Starlings. An accipiter flew in and scattered the flock and they moved off out
of sight.
I also had a Golden-crowned Kinglet in the yard.
This morning at Imperial, I saw two Savannah Sparrows and one Grasshopper
Sparrow. These sparrows are in fresh plumage and are really striking.

Subject: [PABIRDS] Franklin's Gull, Falls Twsp, Bucks Co, 10/16/04
From: Devich Farbotnik <birdwatcher24_7(AT)YAHOO.COM>
Date: 16 Oct 2004 8:47pm
I had a winter adult Franklin's Gull this evening at
Falls Township Community Park. It was with several
thousand Laughing Gulls on the large body of water.
Falls Township park is in the southern part of Bucks
County near Levittown. From the turnpike take route
13 north for about 3 or 4 miles to the Mill Creek Road
exit. Take Mill Creek Road to the right and then make
the first left into the park. Go into the park and
make the first right. This will take you over a small
bridge and the lake will be in front of you. I will
check tomorrow and post if it is there.
Good birding,
Devich Farbotnik

Subject: [PABIRDS] Tulpehocken Creek, Berks Co.
From: Katrina Knight <kknight(AT)EPIX.NET>
Date: 16 Oct 2004 10:15pm
I led a field trip for beginners this morning, along the Tulpehocken
Creek in Berks Co. Despite the miserable weather last night, we
actually had sunshine for most of the walk today. We didn't see
anything unusual, but had good close looks at some birds that aren't
always easy for beginners to see. We saw a lot of chickadees, some of
which were the usual unidentifiable local birds, but quite a few of
which appeared to be northern Black-caps.
Turkey Vulture
Canada Goose
Red-tailed Hawk
Rock Pigeon
Mourning Dove
Belted Kingfisher
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Downy Woodpecker
Eastern Phoebe
Blue-headed Vireo
Blue Jay
American Crow
Tree Swallow
Black-capped Chickadee
chickadee sp.
Tufted Titmouse
White-breasted Nuthatch
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Eastern Bluebird
Hermit Thrush
American Robin
Northern Mockingbird
European Starling
Cedar Waxwing
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler
White-throated Sparrow
Brown-headed Cowbird
blackbird sp (probably Red-winged)
House Finch
Have other people noticed a good movement of Tree Swallows over the
past few days? Yesterday, I did a fair amount of driving around the
southern part of Berks Co, into Lancaster and Chester counties as
well. I saw Tree Swallows over farm fields quite a few times, after
not having seen them at all for a couple of weeks. I had a bunch over
a field at the end of my walk this morning too. Sapsuckers seem to be
on the move right now too.
