[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [PABIRDS] Pine Siskins at feeders(In.Co.) From: Marcy Cunkelman <cunkmar(AT)MICROSERVE.NET> Date: 21 Oct 2004 5:18pm HI All, Not a bad day considering how damp and dreary it was...this morning I heard and saw a siskin on the Jerusalem Artichoke, eating the seeds...Later on in the day, I filled up the feeders and this afternoon I saw 3 at one time on the nyjer sock. They seemed tame and let me work around the area without flying away. Lots of Robins and Cedar Waxwings were still eating on the Black Gum tree and the almost bare Pokeberries. Bluebirds were also eating the berries and checking out the bluebird boxes. Heard a Brown Creeper, but couldn't see it..It was hanging around the mixed flock of B.C. Chickadees, T.Titmice, G.Cr. Kinglets andW.B.Nuthatches. It's amazing how fast they know when the feeders are filled. The shrubs I planted a few years ago are beginning to fill in and now there are places to land and hide, compared to nothing when we moved in....I am now beginning a hedgerow of mixed shrubs along the edge of our property...Trying to get some more habitat and much less mowing. I know it won't take me 20 years to do this like at the old place. Thought I heard Juncos, but haven't seen them yet...they're late this year. White throated Sparrows are singing and had an Eastern Phoebe catching bugs yesterday.... Lady in Red Salvia and other hummer flowers are blooming--still waiting for the lifer Rufous to show up. (I covered and they survived the heavy frost on Monday). Warmer tomorrow and Saturday, so maybe something great will show up :-) Marcy -- Marcy Cunkelman Clarksburg, Pa. They were in a newly plowed field at the corner of Canoe Ripple Rd and Elliot Rd. Looked like at least 50 and probably more. I couldn't scope as I was working at the time so not sure if there were other birds present. Also heard a woodcock going over the house very early this morning before sunrise. 5 or 6 juncos at the feeders now but no hummingbirds yet!
