Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 3rd,
2004. This report covers the period from May 28th to June 3rd, and will be
updated again on June 10th.
Migration is winding down, but a few late migrants were still being found
this week.
At Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, a MOURNING WARBLER was found on the
31st, and an ALDER FLYCATCHER was heard calling on the 29th. An ACADIAN
FLYCATCHER was found on the 28th.
At Napatree Point in Westerly, on the 28th, 74 ROSEATE TERNS, 6 LEAST TERNS,
1 PIPING PLOVER and 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER. On the 1st at Napatree, 24 ROSEATE
TERNS, 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 9 RED KNOTS, 6 AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHERS and 1 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW.
On the 28th, at Quonochontaug, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 3 SEASIDE SPARROWS and 4
SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS.
At the Charlestown Breachway on the 29th, a PEREGRINE FALCON was observed.
Other birds that day included: several WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and 2 ROSEATE
TERNS. Two RED KNOTS and 6 GLOSSY IBIS were seen on the 31st.
At Long Pond in Hopkinton on the 29th, 3 WORM-EATING WARBLERS, 5 HOODED
WARBLERS, 1 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO and 1 WILLOW
FLYCATCHER.
A SOOTY SHEARWATER was seen from the Block Island Ferry on the weekend.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was reported again at Ninigret NWR.
On the 30th, 5 COMMON EIDERS were seen off Fort Wetherill, and a BALD EAGLE
was reported near Rose Island.
On the 3rd, at Stepstone Falls in Arcadia, 3 ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS, 1
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 1 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD and 3
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS.
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were reported from several areas this past week.
A BROAD-WINGED HAWK was seen in West Greenwich on the 3rd.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 10th,
2004. This report covers the period from June 3rd to June 10th, and will be
updated again on June 17th.
The highlight bird of the week was a LEAST BITTERN. Normally difficult to
find, a bird at Trustom Pond NWR delighted several groups of birders over
several days. The first sighting was on June 5th, and it was reported again on
the
6th and 8th. There was a question of possibly two birds on the 8th. The bird
was seen across the water from the wooden bench at Otter Point. Other birds
reported from Trustom included: 1 MARSH WREN, 3 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS,
1 SURF SCOTER and a female WOOD DUCK with 3 young.
A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was reported in Saunderstown on the 9th, but was not
relocated on the 10th.
On the 10th, at Princes (Tiffany) Pond in Barrington, one first summer
ORCHARD ORIOLE.
BROWN THRASHERS were reported from the Charlestown Breachway and along Card's
Pond Road this week.
A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen again at Ninigret NWR on the 6th.
At Buck Hill Management Area in Burrillville on the 6th, the following were
reported: 1 RUFFED GROUSE, 1 WILD TURKEY, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 1 LEAST
FLYCATCHER, 1 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 1 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and 1 INDIGO
BUNTING.
The GREAT BLUE HERON colony has 7
active nests with 4 adults and 13 young seen.
A male COMMON GOLDENEYE and a female BUFFLEHEAD were seen on the Seekonk
River on the 6th.
A seawatch on the 3rd produced 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER, 2 NORTHERN GANNETS, 1
COMMON LOON, 1 RED-THROATED LOON, 4 COMMON EIDER and over 100 WILSON'S STORM
PETRELS. Wilson's Storm Petrels were also reported from several other locations
as
well.
On the 8th at the power line access in North Smithfield, Windsor Substation,
along Route 104, 2 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 1 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, 2 BLUE-WINGED
WARBLERS. 1 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, 4 SWAMP SPARROWS, 1 WARBLING VIREO, 1
VEERY, and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO.
An adult BALD EAGLE was seen flying over Route 101, near the Scituate
Reservoir.
At Durfee Hill Management Area in Glocester on the 10th, 1 LEAST FLYCATCHER,
1 PURPLE FINCH, 1 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 2 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 1
WARBLING VIREO, 1 HAIRY WOODPECKER and 3 HERMIT THRUSH. Also that day, in the
George Washington Management Area, 1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER and 4 young
HOODED MERGANSERS.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 17th,
2004. This report covers the period from June 11 to June 17th and will be
updated again on June 24th.
The LEAST BITTERN at Trustom Pond NWR was last reported on the 11th. The
bird was seen at Otter Point. Other birds reported that day included: 1
PIED-BILLED GREBE, 1 GREEN HERON, 1 GREAT EGRET and 1 WOOD DUCK. Near Trustom
on the
12th, a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was observed.
On the 13th, a COMMON MOORHEN was found at the pond behind Aunt Carrie's
Restaurant in Narragansett. The bird was heard calling and seen in the pond.
A BLACK SKIMMER was reported at Seapowet Marsh in Tiverton on the 17th.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 11th: 1 COMMON LOON, 4 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER, 3 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 7 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 6 PIPING PLOVER 9
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 3 WILLET, 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 13 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 7 RED
KNOT, 26 SANDERLING, 70 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 5 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and 30
ROSEATE TERN.
A LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported from Succotash Marsh In Jerusalem on the
11th.
A trip to Cox's Ledge on the cod fishing boat on the 13th produced: over 100
WILSON'S STORM PETRELS, 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER, 1 CORY'S SHEARWATER, 4 GREATER
SHEARWATER and 2 PARASITIC JAEGER.
On the 15th, a COMMON EIDER was seen off the URI Graduate School of
Oceanography beach in Narragansett.
The following is an update on the PEREGRINE FALCONS nesting in Rhode Island:
As of June 14, the four Peregrine Falcon chicks in downtown Providence are 42
days old and will be taking their first flight very soon. This is the first
time that there are four chicks in Providence. The birds can be observed from
the Crawford St. Bridge in Providence, along the water where Water Fire is held,
near Hemenway's Restaurant. Look up at the Fleet Bank building. The box is
on the ledge there.
- On June 3, 2004, in Newport County, 3 Peregrine Falcon chicks were banded:
2 male and 1 female. One unhatched egg was discovered.
- A second Peregrine Falcon nest in Newport County that is inaccessible
contains at least two chicks. Thanks to Moe Parenteau for the report.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 24th,
2004. This report covers the period from June 18 to June 24th, and will be
updated again on July 1st.
Mid June is a very slow time for birding, and there were few reports this
week.
The highlight of the week was a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON seen at Trustom
Pond NWR. This adult bird was seen on Saturday, June 19th.
At Marsh Meadows in Jamestown on the 18th, a GLOSSY IBIS and a LITTLE BLUE
HERON were observed.
On the 20th at Burlingame Management Area off Buckeye Brook Rd, there was one
MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER and 1 HOODED WARBLER.
The following were reported at Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown on the
20th: 2 GREEN HERONS, 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON 1 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD,
1
GLOSSY IBIS, 1 WILLOW FLYCATCHER, 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO and several BOBOLINKS.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen in Saunderstown on the 23rd, and a BROAD-WINGED
HAWK was observed in West Greenwich on the 24th.
The downtown Providence PEREGRINE FALCONS continue to delight visitors to the
capital city. On the 18th it was noted that all the young PEREGRINE FALCONS
had fledged and left the nest box at the Fleet Bank Building. They were seen
flying about and landing on the surrounding tall buildings. The parents were
seen bringing them food and are encouraging them further.
