Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for July 1st,
2004. This report covers the period from June 25th to July 1st and will be
updated again on July 8th.
The highlight of the week was a RUFF found at the Charlestown Breachway on
June 30th. The bird was see flying in and was studied for a while before a dog
flushed it off the flats. The bird returned and was observed feeding. The
bird was not reported on the 1st. Other birds at the Breachway this week
included: on the 1st, 4 BONAPARTE'S GULLS and 5 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS. On the
29th, 3 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 8 WILLETS,and 2 PIPING PLOVERS, and the 25th
there were 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS.
There were 2 reports of BLACK SKIMMERS. On the 26th, 3 BLACK SKIMMERS were
reported flying south past Black Point in Narragansett, and on the 30th, one
was seen near Camp Cronin in Point Judith.
On a whale watch out of Galilee on the 30th: 20 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 5 CORY'S
SHEARWATERS, 2 SOOTY SHEARWATERS and 1 MANX SHEARWATER.
A LEAST BITTERN was seen at Trustom Pond NWR at Otter Point on the 27th.
In the George Washington Management Area in Burrillville and Glocester birds
reported on the 26th included: 3 WOOD DUCKS, 2 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 1 NORTHERN
SAW-WHET OWL, 1 RUFFED GROUSE, 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER, 3 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH,
1 WINTER WREN, and 1 INDIGO BUNTING. Warblers seen that day included: 9
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, 17 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 4 BLACKBURNIAN, 1
CANADA, 2 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH and 1 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH.
A WHIMBREL was seen at Napatree Point in Westerly on the 28th.
Two HOODED WARBLERS were reported from Fisherville Brook in Exeter, and 3
were observed at Long Pond in Hopkinton on the 27th.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for July 8th,
2004. This report covers the period from July 2nd to July 8th and will be
updated again on July 15th.
BLACK SKIMMERS were reported several times this week. Two were reported at
the mouth of the Narrow River in Narragansett on the 4th and on the 7th, and 4
BLACK SKIMMERS were seen on the 4th at the Charlestown Breachway.
The Charlestown Breachway was the source of numerous sightings during the
week including the following: 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER which was reported over the
course of several days, 1 WHIMBREL, up to 11 PIPING PLOVERS, 11 KILLDEER, 1
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 8 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 2 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 7 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, 4 ROSEATE TERNS, and
both SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS and SEASIDE SPARROWS. Two CASPIAN TERNS
were seen and photographed on the 2nd, but not reported again after that day.
Seen over the ocean along the beach here on the 5th were 2-3 SOOTY SHEARWATERS
and a GREATER SHEARWATER.
On the 2nd at the Francis Carter Preserve in Charlestown, 1 INDIGO BUNTING
and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW.
At Quonochontaug on the 2nd, 7 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and a flyover WHIMBREL were
reported.
Two PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen on the top of the Mount Hope Bridge in
Bristol on the 7th.
Along Ponagansett Road in Foster on the 6th a PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen
along with 2 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS, 9 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 6 RED-EYED VIREOS and 4
YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS. Two PILEATED WOODPECKERS were reported along Pond
Road in Chepachet on the 8th.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for July 15th,
2004. This report covers the period from July 9th to July 15th. The report
will NOT be updated next week. Look for the next report on July 29th.
The Charlestown Breachway was the site of several good birds this week the
highlight being a breeding plumaged CURLEW SANDPIPER discovered on the morning
of the 15th and observed throughout the day. Also seen on the 15th: 24
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 4 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, numerous
PIPING
PLOVERS, 1 SANDERLING, 150 COMMON TERNS, 6 ROSEATE TERNS, 1 FOSTER'S TERN and 2
BLACK TERNS. On the 14th, 1 WHIMBREL, a CASPIAN TERN and a RED KNOT, and on
the 10th an immature YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER and 7
BONAPARTE'S GULLS were seen. A BLACK SKIMMER and a BLUE-WINGED TEAL were
observed on the 9th.
A ROYAL TERN was reported flying west along the coast towards Sachuest Point
in Middletown on the 9th.
On the 10th, at Narrow River in Narragansett, 1 immature YELLOW-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON and 2 LITTLE BLUE HERONS.
An adult BALD EAGLE was reported from the Albion section of Cumberland on the
11th.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for July 29th,
2004. This report covers the period from July 18th to July 29th and will be
updated on August 5th.
An AMERICAN AVOCET was found in Middletown on the 25th. The bird was seen
reliably for three days in the pools in the area of the saltmarsh restoration
just outside the Third Beach parking lot. It was not seen on the 28th, but was
reported again on the 29th. Also seen here were: 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 7
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER.
A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen soaring over Block Island on the 25th. A
repeat performance was described on the 27th, however that was the last
sighting,
despite mainland birders going over to check. Birds reported from the Block
Island ferry on the 23rd included dozens of WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 1 MANX
SHEARWATER and 1 WHIMBREL.
On the 20th at the Charlestown Breachway, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 2 BLACK TERNS
and 1 CASPIAN TERN. A WHIMBREL was seen on the 21st, and on the 27th, 3 BLACK
TERNS, 75 COMMON TERNS, 4 ROSEATE TERNS.
At At Quicksand Pond in Little Compton on the 28th, 1 MARBLED GODWIT, 3
WHIMBRELS, 4 RED KNOTS, 12 PIPING PLOVERS, 100 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 10
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 200 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 4 SANDERLINGS, 6 RUDDY
TURNSTONES,
100 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 300 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 1
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 25 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 20 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 6 ROSEATE
TERNS, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS, 40 COMMON TERNS and 25 LEAST TERNS.
The following birds were observed at Napatree Point over the past week: 1
WESTERN SANDPIPER, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER 2 DUNLIN, 2
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 10 PIPING PLOVERS, 12 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 1 WHIMBREL, 3 RED KNOTS, and 2 BLACK TERNS.
A LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported at Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem on the 25th.
