Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for August 5th,
2004. This report covers the period from July 30th to August 5th and will be
updated on August 12th.
The AMERICAN AVOCET discovered last week was present until the 1st in the
pools just outside Third Beach in Middletown. On the 1st, a BLACK SKIMMER was
reported at Third Beach.
A SANDWICH TERN was seen and photographed at the Charlestown Breachway on the
31st. It was observed for a short time and then left the area and was not
seen again. Other birds that day included: 29 PIPING PLOVER, 54 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, 9 WHIMBREL, 125 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 25 LEAST SANDPIPER, 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 3 STILT SANDPIPERS, 55 SANDERLINGS, 11 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 7
BONAPARTE'S GULL, 50 ROSEATE TERN, 500 COMMON TERN, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS, 45 LEAST
TERNS
and. 4 BLACK TERNS. On the 1st, 6 WHIMBREL, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 1 STILT
SANDPIPER, 61 ROSEATE TERNS, 477 COMMON TERNS, 3 BLACK TERNS and 2 BLACK
SKIMMERS.
A CASPIAN TERN was spotted over the ocean near the Breachway on the 30th, and
a WESTERN SANDPIPER was reported from the flats that day. On the 2nd, 3
BLACK SKIMMERS, 5 BLACK TERNS, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and 1 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER.
At Quicksand Pond in Little Compton on the 31st, 1 MARBLED GODWIT, 2
WHIMBREL, 1 BLACK SKIMMER, 660 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 170
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 6 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 9 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 RUDDY
TURNSTONE, 1 WILLET, 100 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 12 LEAST SANDPIPER, 12 PIPING
PLOVER, 2 KILLDEER, 1 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 25 SANDERLING, 2 FOSTER'S TERNS,
2 ROSEATE TERN, 50 COMMON TERN, 8 LEAST TERN and a PIED-BILLED GREBE. A
PARASITIC JAEGER was observed briefly that day chasing the birds on the flats.
On
the 5th at Quicksand there were 27 RED KNOTS, and at Seapowet Marsh in
Tiverton, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 4th, 5 RED KNOTS and 1 BLACK TERN.
A RUFFED GROUSE was flushed from near the parking lot for Chase Farm on Route
123 in Lincoln on the 3rd.
On the 3rd in Narragansett, behind the Scarborough wastewater treatment
plant, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were reported, and on the 30th, near the town
beach, 1
NORTHERN BOBWHITE was observed.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for August 12th,
2004. This report covers the period from August 6th to August 12th and will
be updated on August 19th.
Reports were slim this week, but again, shorebirds seem to dominate the
sightings.
At the Charlestown Breachway the following were observed this week: on the
10th, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, on the 7th, 2 PIPING PLOVERS, 7 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 5
WILLETS, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 2 BLACK TERNS, 4
ROSEATE TERNS, 60 COMMON TERNS, 12 LEAST TERNS, 1 FORSTER'S TERN and 3 immature
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. Two BLACK TERNS were also reported there on the
9th.
At Third Beach restoration area in Middletown on the 6th, 1 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHER, 8 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and
5
GLOSSY IBIS were observed.
On the 8th at Napatree Point in Westerly, 4 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 58
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 2 PIPING PLOVERS, 25 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 3 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 8 WILLETS, 5 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, 65 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 2 RED KNOTS,
390
SANDERLINGS, 310 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 6 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 73 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, 10 ROSEATE TERNS, 200 COMMON TERNS and a few LEAST TERNS.
A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen just on the other side of the Galilee breakwater
on the 9th attacking Common Terns. The bird then took off and followed the
Block Island ferry for a while.
On the 9th at Walker Farm in Barrington, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SOLITARY
SANDPIPER and 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen near the Jamestown Bridge on the 7th, and a BALD
EAGLE was spotted in Smithfield on the 9th.

2004. This report covers the period from August 13th to August 19th and will

A ROYAL TERN sighted at the Charlestown Breachway on the 14th was the most
unusual bird reported this week. Other birds on the flats that day included: 10
GREAT EGRET, 50 SNOWY EGRET, 227 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 KILLDEER, 2 WHIMBREL,
2 RED KNOT, 20 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 8 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 7 BONAPARTE'S GULL, 50
LAUGHING GULL, 27 ROSEATE TERN, 725 COMMON TERN, 6 FORSTER'S TERN, 2 BLACK TERN,
1
immature COOPER'S HAWK and 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO. On the 17th, 1 BLACK TERN,
4 FOSTER'S TERN, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 1 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER, 4 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 5
PIPING PLOVERS and 1 COOPER'S HAWK. A PEREGRINE FALCON was also seen that day
chasing the shorebirds.
An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen on the turf fields along Switch Road in Richmond
on the 15th. On the 17th, an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was reported along with
9 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.
On the 17th at Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON.
A STILT SANDPIPER was seen at the Third Beach Saltmarsh restoration in
Middletown on the 14th.
WHIMBRELS were seen in several areas this week: one on the 12th behind Capt.
Jack's Restaurant in Jerusalem, on the 14th, one was photographed in a grassy
field in Exeter, and one was seen on the beach at Brigg's Beach in Little
Compton on the 19th. Also seen at Briggs that day: 2 BLACK TERNS, 2 WESTERN
SANDPIPER, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, and 1 BONAPARTE'S GULL.
A CASPIAN TERN was seen on the 15th flying north up the Seekonk River into
Pawtucket.
On the 14th, at Hope Island in Narragansett Bay, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS
and a GLOSSY IBIS.
At Napatree Point on the 18th, 1 WHIMBREL, 7 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 2 BLACK
TERNS, and 30 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
Five COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen over McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket.

2004. This report covers the period from August 20th to August 26th and will
be updated on September 2nd.
The Charlestown Breachway continues to be the hotspot this week. An AMERICAN
AVOCET was found feeding on the flats on August 21st and was reported all
week. Other birds seen on the 21st: 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 2 BLACK
SKIMMERS, 12 WHIMBREL, 15 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 2
PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 78 ROSEATE TERNS, 475 COMMON TERNS, 4 FORSTER'S
TERNS, 19 LEAST TERNS and 3 BLACK TERNS. Two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were seen on
the
22nd, and on the 23rd, 3 MARBLED GODWITS and 4 STILT SANDPIPERS were reported.
One MARBLED GODWIT was seen on the 24th, along with 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 1
WHIMBREL, and a high count of 10 BLACK TERNS. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was
seen on the 24th and 25th. On the 26th, the MARBLED GODWIT continues and a
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and a MERLIN were also seen.
On the 22nd, 1 UPLAND SANDPIPER, 12 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and 3 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVERS were present on Switch Road in Richmond in the fields opposite
and
northeast of the high school. An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen on the 22nd at
Heaton Orchard Road also in Richmond.
At First Beach in Newport, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was seen on the 22nd.
At Camp Cronin in Narragansett on the 22nd, 1 CANADA WARBLER, 1 AMERICAN
REDSTART, and 1 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK.
Birds reported from Walkers Farm in Barrington this week included: 2 INDIGO
BUNTING, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS, and 5
LEAST SANDPIPERS.
At Napatree Point on the 26th, 25 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 56 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, 30 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 3 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 49 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 26
RED
KNOT, 27 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 2 ROSEATE TERN, 20 COMMON TERN, 6 LEAST TERN
and 1 BLACK TERN.
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were reported migrating in modest numbers in several towns
this week.
