Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for September 2,
2004. This report covers the period from August 27th to September 2, and will
be updated on September 9th.
The AMERICAN AVOCET and the MARBLED GODWIT continued at the Charlestown
Breachway until the 1st, They were not seen on the 2nd. The coldfront
apparently
took those birds and others away. Earlier in the week the following were seen:
1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 3 CASPIAN TERNS, 8 STILT
SANDPIPERS, 3 RED KNOTS, up to 9 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 4
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and 1 DUNLIN. The Dunlin was seen on the 1st. A MERLIN
and a NORTHERN HARRIER were also reported.
A WHIMBREL was seen at Third Beach in Middletown on the 1st.
On the 29th at Green's Island in Warwick, about 2500 terns including an
estimated 150 ROSEATE TERNS, 100 FORSTER'S TERNS, 50 LEAST TERNS and 1 BLACK
TERN.
Also, one MARBLED GODWIT, 4 RED KNOTS and 19 RUDDY TURNSTONES were seen.
A probable SABINE'S GULL seen on the 29th in the upper portion of
Narragansett Bay, northwest of the Ohio Ledge Buoy and southeast of Conimicut
Point in
Warwick. The bird was observed as it flew and fed in the company of many terns
and Laughing Gulls. It was not reported again after that day.
On the 1st at Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was
found. Also seen that day: 30 BOBOLINKS, 2 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 20 SONG
SPARROWS, 12 CHIPPING SPARROWS, 2 EASTERN PHOEBES, and a COOPER'S HAWK.
On the turf fields along Switch Road in Richmond on the 1st, 2 AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVER, and 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for September 10,
2004. This report covers the period from September 3rd to September 10, and
will be updated on September 16th.
The landbird highlight of the week was a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER found along the
Otter Point Trail at Trustom Pond NWR on the 6th. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was
also seen that day along with 5 WHITE-EYED VIREOS and 1 AMERICAN REDSTART.
Along Osprey Point Trail, 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 1 SCARLET TANAGER and 1
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER.
The seabird highlight of the week was an adult breeding plumaged SABINE'S
GULL seen on a chartered pelagic trip on the 8th out of Point Judith. This bird
was seen about 8 miles east of Block Island. Other birds counted on that day
included: 3 LONG-TAILED JAEGERS, 12 POMARINE JAEGERS, 5 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 3
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, 565 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 355 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 8 SOOTY
SHEARWATERS, 2 MANX SHEARWATERS, 775 WILSON'S STORM PETREL and 2 LEACH'S STORM
PETREL.
A GREATER SHEARWATER was well seen and photographed on the 5th in upper
Narragansett Bay. The bird was first observed while it was sitting on the
water,
southeast of Conimicut Point in Warwick. It was not relocated.
The Charlestown Breachway continues to produce good birds with 2 CASPIAN
TERNS sighted on the 4th, and a HUDSONIAN GODWIT on the 10th. Other birds
reported on the 10th included: 1 MARBLED GODWIT, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 1 RED KNOT,
1
WHIMBREL, 6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 1 PIPING PLOVER, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and a
MERLIN.
A CASPIAN TERN was reported in Middletown near St.Mary's Pond on the 9th, and
a BLACK TERN was seen at Quonochontaug on the 6th.
Two WHIMBRELS were seen on the 5th at East Beach in Charlestown, feeding in
seaweed above the high water line.
On the 4th, along the Switch Road sod farms in Richmond, 1 BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPER and 6 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen on
the 5th at the turf farm along Heaton Orchard Road.
A MOURNING WARBLER, 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 3 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 2
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 2 EASTERN WOOD-PEWEES, 1 LEAST FLYCATCHER and one
GREAT
CRESTED FLYCATCHER were at Rome Point in North Kingston on the 4th.
On the 6th at the Browning Mill Pond area in Arcadia Management. Area, 2
NASHVILLE WARBLERS, 4 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, 5 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS,

PINE WARBLERS, 2 BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS, 4 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 1 OVENBIRD, 1
HOODED WARBLER, 2 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, 1 SCARLET TANAGER and 1 BALTIMORE
ORIOLE.
Four COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in Burrillville on the 8th.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for September 16,
2004. This report covers the period from September 11th to September 16, and
will be updated on September 23rd.
A LARK SPARROW was found on the 14th, and was reported again on the 16th at
Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly. Avondale is off Route 1A, and consists of
a paved circular road, with a large field of wildflowers and weeds in the
middle. The bird was seen both days around Watch Shade Farm, on the wall and on
the fence around the vegetable garden. Other birds here included 20 SAVANNAH
SPARROWS, 1 CHIPPING SPARROW, 1 SWAMP SPARROW, 1 BALTIMORE ORIOLE, 8 BOBOLINKS
and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK.
On the 11th at Rome Point in North Kingstown, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 1
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, 2 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 1 EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE and 2
BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHERS.
At Buck Hill Management Area in Burrillville on the 11th, a CONNECTICUT
WARBLER was reported along with: 1 TENNESSEE WARBLER, 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 3
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 2 PINE WARBLERS, 16 BLACKPOLLS, 1 BLUE-HEADED
VIREO, 1
PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 2 YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS, and 10 RED-EYED VIREOS.
On the 12th, 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS were seen from a fishing boat less that one
mile offshore between Colt State Park and Barrington Beach. There have been
reports of thousands of terns in the bay feeding on schools of Bluefish this
week.
Along Switch Road in Richmond, 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was observed on the
14th.
A CASPIAN TERN was seen inland, at the Woonsocket Reservoir in North
Smithfield. Two CASPIAN TERNS were reported at the Charlestown Breachway on the
14th.
Also seen at the Breachway this week, 1 MARBLED GODWIT, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER,
1 PIPING PLOVER, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, several
DUNLIN and a BALD EAGLE.
On the 14th at the quarry and salt marsh along Hazard Road in Newport, 1
LITTLE BLUE HERON, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 1 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, 1
YELLOW-THROATED
VIREO, 1 RED-EYED VIREO, 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER and 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER. One
WINTER WREN was reported from this location on the 13th.
Birds seen at Napatree Point on the 11th: 2 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 37
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 20 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 36 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 1
LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 4 WILLET, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 49 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 4 RED KNOT, 90
SANDERLING, 40 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 11 LEAST SANDPIPER, 2 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER, 2 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and 2 AMERICAN PIPIT.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for September 23,
2004. This report covers the period from September 17th to September 23rd,
and will be updated on September 30th.
Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly continues to attract interesting bird
sightings. On the 23rd, 2 BLUE GROSBEAKS were observed near the center of the
wildflower field, near the stone wall and in the trees along there. The
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen on the 17th and 21st. Other bird regulars here
include:
8 BOBOLINKS, 1 EASTERN MEADOWLARK, several PALM WARBLERS and numerous EASTERN
PHOEBES and SAVANNAH SPARROWS. On the 21st, a COOPER'S HAWK, 1 MERLIN and 1
AMERICAN KESTREL were seen.
A ROYAL TERN put in a brief appearance at the Charlestown Breachway on the
20th along with 1 CASPIAN TERN and 1 MARBLED GODWIT.
At the turf fields along Heaton Orchard Road in Richmond on the 21st there
were 4 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and on the 22nd, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were
observed along with the numerous KILLDEER.
A male PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen in the marsh behind the cemetery on Rams
Tail Road in Foster, near the junction with Route 6 on the 21st. Also seen
that day: 1 BLACKPOLL, 2 NORTHERN PARULAS, 3 PINE WARBLERS, 1 BLACKBURNIAN
WARBLER, 3 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 2 BROWN CREEPERS, 1
SCARLET
TANAGER, 1 HAIRY WOODPECKER, and 1 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER.
On the 20th, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen along Ponagansett Road in
Foster.
At Trustom Pond NWR on the 22nd, 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER, 2 NORTHERN PARULA, 2
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 3
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 3 BLACKPOLL, and 1 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH.
On Block Island on the 19th: 2 BARN SWALLOWS, 1200 TREE SWALLOWS, 1
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, 1 HOUSE WREN, 8 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 1 BLUE-GRAY
GNATCATCHER, 2
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 1 CAPE MAY WARBLER, 1 PRAIRIE WARBLER, 2 PALM WARBLERS,

AMERICAN REDSTARTS, 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 1 BLACKPOLL, 1 MAGNOLIA
WARBLER, 2 NORTHERN PARULA, 3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and 1 INDIGO BUNTING. Also, 2
