Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for October 7th,
2004. This report covers the period from October 1st to October 7th, and will
be updated on October 14th.
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island held its annual fall Block Island birding
weekend from October 1 to 3. Around 100 species were tallied by the Audubon
groups, and several additional reports came from various observers.
Highlights from the week include: 1 RED-THROATED LOON in breeding plumage seen
at the
North End, 10 PEREGRINE FALCONS, 15 MERLINS, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL, 1 BLACK-BILLED and 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 1 adult RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER, 3 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, 1 WARBLING VIREO, 25 RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCHES,
7 BROWN CREEPERS, 1 WINTER WREN, 6 AMERICAN PIPITS, 2 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS,
3 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and 2 DICKCISSELS. Warblers
seen included: 1 MOURNING WARBLER, 6 NASHVILLE, 3 NORTHERN PARULA, 2 YELLOW, 1
MAGNOLIA, 3 BLACK-THROATED BLUE, 10 BLACK-THROATED GREEN, 2 PRAIRIE, 1
BLACKBURNIAN, 3 BLACKPOLL, 2 WILSON'S AND 1 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. In the marsh
at
Andy's Way: 1 AMERICAN BITTERN, 1 WHIMBREL, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 4 CASPIAN
TERNS and 2 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS. Along the sand road leading to the
North Light, 3 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were seen on the 4th, and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO
was reported at the North End on the 5th.
Five SNOW GEESE were seen at Trustom Pond NRW on the 3rd, and 7 were seen on
Card's Pond.
On the 4th, at the Charlestown Breachway, 1 MARBLED GODWIT was again
reported, along with 2 CASPIAN TERNS, and on the 7th, a PEREGRINE FALCON was a
nice
find.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 5th, 2 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, 1
LINCOLN'S SPARROW and a flyover RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.
Walkers Farm in Barrington this week produced: 1 CLAY-COLORED SPARROW (seen
on the 1st), 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and 2 SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS.
Two DICKCISSELS were seen in the weedy field at Avondale Farm Preserve In
Westerly on the 7th.

Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly continues to lure rare and uncommon=20
species. As many as 4 DICKCISSELS were reported from there over the weekend=

one continued on the 14th. Also seen there this week: 2 VESPER SPARROWS, 2=20
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, 1 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARRO=
W, 1=20
MARSH WREN, 1 INDIGO BUNTING, 20 AMERICAN PIPITS, 4 BOBOLINKS, 6 EASTERN=20
MEADOWLARKS, 3 COOPER'S HAWKS, 2 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK,=
and an=20
adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. A COMMON RAVEN was seen and heard over the fiel=
ds=20
on the 13th. =20
Birders visiting Block Island reported an EARED GREBE at Sachem Pond on the=20
North end of the island on the 10th. Later in the day, a SUMMER TANAGER was=
=20
observed at the Manisses Hotel near the center of town.
At Napatree Point in Westerly On the 12th: 1 BRANT, 3 AMERICAN KESTREL, 1=20
PEREGRINE FALCON, 34 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 25 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 2 RUDD=
Y=20
TURNSTONE, 2 RED KNOT, 59 SANDERLING, 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 15 DUNLIN, 5 AMER=
ICAN=20
PIPIT, and 1 AMERICAN TREE SPARROW.=20
On the 13th an AMERICAN BITTERN was seen at the Charlestown Breachway, and=20
the MARBLED GODWIT was reported again on the 10th.
There were 6 SNOW GEESE in with about 500 CANADA GEESE at Trustom Pond NWR=20
over the weekend. Also a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and a HERMIT THRUSH were obse=
rved=20
there.
At Walkers Farm in Barrington a DICKCISSEL was a nice find on the 14th. =20
Other birds there this week included: 1 LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 1 WHITE-CROWNED=20

BLUE WARBLER, 2 PINE WARBLERS, 1 BLACKPOLL and 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS.=20
At Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly, 1 DICKCISSEL continues to be reported=

with the latest report from the 21st. Also this week: 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 1=

COOPER'S HAWK, 6 AMERICAN PIPITS, 2 VESPER SPARROWS, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW=

Two YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were reported this week. One was seen at Camp=20
Cronin in Narragansett on the 15th, and another was reported in the Buttonwo=
ods=20
section of Warwick on the 19th.
At Trustom Pond NWR on the 15th: 1 RED-THROATED LOON, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES, 1=
=20
SNOW GOOSE, 1 MERLIN, 3 BLUE-HEADED VIREO and 4 HERMIT THRUSH.
On the 15th at the Charlestown Breachway, 3 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS,=20
and 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS.
At the East Providence Reservoir, one 1st winter LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was reported from Carolina Management Area on the 16th.
A BALD EAGLE was observed in Pawtucket on the 18th.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 18th, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR was a nice=20
find. Also seen that day: 5 BRANT, 11 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 2 GREATER YELLO=
WLEGS,=20
70 SANDERLING, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and 33 DUNLIN.
An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen at Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem on the 19th.
Along Moonstone Beach, 1 RED KNOT along with 9 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were=20
observed on the 21st.
Finally, on the 21st, along Matunuck Schoolhouse Road in South Kingston, jus=
t=20
east of the maintenance building for Trustom, 1 BLUE GROSBEAK, 1 VESPER=20
SPARROW, 3 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, over 20 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 1 CHIPPING SPA=
RROW, 1=20
FIELD SPARROW, 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, and 1 AMERICAN REDSTART.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for October 28th,
2004. This report covers the period from October 22nd to October 28th, and
will be updated on November 4th.
A LARK SPARROW was found on the 26th. It was seen with a WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW in a hedgerow at the North west corner of the corn field at Roy
Carpenter's
Beach in Matunuck. In the flooded grassy area on the West side of the
Carpenter's Beach summer houses, 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS and a WILSON'S SNIPE were
seen
on the 23rd.
Along Matunuck Schoolhouse Road, just east of Trustom NWR, the BLUE GROSBEAK
found last week was seen again on the 23rd, 26th and 27th. A VESPER SPARROW
was seen here on the 23rd, and on the 26th, a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found. A
juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen in the row of trees just to the east
of the field. The field here is posted, however birding can be done by
standing on the road and using a scope.
At Trustom Pond on the trail to Otter Point, 1 PURPLE FINCH and a BROWN
THRASHER on the 26th.
On the 23rd, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, was found at Ninigret Park in
Charlestown.
Birds seen at Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly this week include: 1
AMERICAN BITTERN, 4 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 1 HAIRY
WOODPECKER, 4
EASTERN MEADOWLARK, 1 VESPER SPARROW and 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
In Westerly, on the 23rd, 1 LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen in the Weekapaug area.
At Napatree Point, 4 PINE SISKINS, 1 SNOW BUNTING and a SHORT-EARED OWL were
observed on the 26th and at the farm on the corner of Noyes Neck Road and
Route 1A, 20 AMERICAN PIPITS.
At Firehouse Pond in Charlestown, 7 NORTHERN PINTAIL and 9 GADWALL.
In Foster on the 28th, a COMMON RAVEN was seen flying over Ponagansett Road.
