Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for April 7,
2005. This report covers the period from March 31st to April 7th, and will be
updated again on April 14th.
A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was discovered in Newport on March 31st. The bird was
seen all the following day along the cliff walk in Newport, near the Tea
House at Marble House. It was not reported after the 1st, but heavy, sustained
rain the next day hampered efforts.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was found in Middletown on the 5th, and has been very
cooperative every day since. Look for this bird around the Middletown
Historical Society, Paradise School building, at the corner of Prospect and
Paradise
Avenue. The bird has been seen around the grounds here and across the
street. An EASTERN KINGBIRD was observed at Norman Bird Sanctuary on the 1st.
A rare spring sighting of a DICKCISSEL was at a feeder on Block Island on the
1st. Other birds seen on Block Island this week included: 3 GREAT EGRET, 1
SNOWY EGRET and 3 LITTLE BLUE HERON.
A LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen in Jerusalem. It was observed in the small
marsh on the East side of the road, before the bridge on the 5th. Other birds
that day: 8 GLOSSY IBIS, 1 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
On the 7th, a COMMON (EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED) TEAL was seen with about 20
GREEN-WINGED TEAL at St.Mary's Pond in Portsmouth. Sixty RUDDY DUCKS, 10 GLOSSY
IBIS, and 1 MERLIN were also reported from this location.
One PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen on the 3rd at Arcadia Management in Exeter
along the Yellow Trail near Stepstone Falls. A BARRED OWL was reported in the
area on the 5th.
On the 6th at Salter Grove on Narragansett Parkway in Warwick, 1 GLAUCOUS
GULL.
At Napatree Point on the 7th: 1 immature male KING EIDER and 2 LONG-TAILED
DUCK.
The REDHEAD continues at the East Providence Reservoir, and a BALD EAGLE was
sighted there this week.
Birds reported from the Great Swamp Management area include: 8 OSPREY, 1
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRD, 2 FIELD SPARROW, 3 PINE WARBLER and a
BALD
EAGLE.
INDIGO BUNTING were reported at two locations along the coast this week.
The year to date species count is 160. Number of Species reported in March:
134, with 12 new species added to the total. (thanks to Dave Gumbley for the
statistics)

April 30, 3 p.m. GREAT SWAMP BIRDING. Join one of our Kimball naturalists for
a springtime walk into the Great Swamp Management Area. We'll be going late
in the afternoon because the management area is open for Wild Turkey hunting
until 1 p.m. The main entrance is off Liberty Lane in West Kingston, which goes
south off Rte. 138 about one-tenth of a mile west of the traffic light at Rte.
110. Follow the entrance road past the headquarters building to the parking

2005. This report covers the period from April 8th to April 14th, and will=20=

The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER found in Middletown on the 5th, was last reported=20
on the 11th, however it is most likely still at the spot, just not reported.=
It=20
frequents the area around the Middletown Historical Society, Paradise School=
=20
building, at the corner of Prospect and Paradise Avenue. =20
On the 8th, another sighting of a COMMON RAVEN in Lincoln, along route 295=20
just north of the Route 146 exit. The bird was seen flying and landing on a=20
highway light post. This same behavior was observed here in February.
A TRICOLORED HERON was found at Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem on the 9th. It=
=20
was seen in the early morning of the 10th, and not reported again until a=20
sighting on the 13th. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen on the 9th. Other birds in=20=
the=20
area included: 3 SNOWY EGRETS, 7 GREAT EGRETS, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON and 3 GRE=
ATER=20
YELLOWLEGS.
A LITTLE BLUE HERON was found at Marsh Meadows in Jamestown on the 13th, and=
=20
on the 10th, one was seen at the Charlestown Breachway.
BLUE WINGED TEAL were reported for the first time this year at St.Mary's=20
Pond. Four were observed on the 10th and 2 were there on the 12th. Over 40=
=20
GLOSSY IBIS were seen feeding along the shore on the 10th.
On the 13th, along Route 102 in Scituate, 1 RUFFED GROUSE.
In Cumberland, on Tower Hill Road and Pristine Drive 1 YELLOW-BELLIED=20
SAPSUCKER was found on the 13th. (This is the site of last year's Red-headed=
=20
Woodpecker sightings)
At Moonstone Beach Road in Matunuck, 1 WILSON'S SNIPE. Another WILSON'S=20
SNIPE was observed on Corn Neck Road on Block Island this past week.
LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH returned to northern Rhode Island on the 14th, with=20
reports from Pulaski Park and Durfee Hill in Glocester. Also seen at Pulask=
i=20
were 1 singing WINTER WREN, 1 PURPLE FINCH and a BARRED OWL.
At Barden Reservoir in Foster, 1 BALD EAGLE, 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE and several=
=20
ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS at the bridge on Central Pike. =20
Along Rams Tail Road in Foster, 1 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 1 BROWN CREEPER and=20=
2=20
BARRED OWLS.
New migrants this week included 1 BLUE-GREY GNATCATCHER at Trustom Pond NWR,=
=20
CHIPPING SPARROWS and SWAMP SPARROWS at various=20
locations.

On the 17th at Simmons Mill Pond in Little Compton, 6 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER,=

4 PALM WARBLER, 7 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 3 PINE=20
WARBLER, and 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO.
At Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly on the 18th, 3 WILSON'S SNIPE around=20
the wet areas in back.
On the 21st along Rams Tail Road, Foster, 1 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 1=20
BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 1 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 1 LOUISIANA=20
WATERTHRUSH, and 1 BROAD-WINGED HAWK. From nearby Kate Randall and Hemlock=20
Roads, 2 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, 4 BLUE-HEADED=20

A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen this morning in the Old Harbor area of Block=20
Island, going south towards the Southeast Lighthouse.
A SUMMER TANAGER was reported in a private yard in Jamestown this week. The=
=20
landowner observed the bird from April 24th to the 26th.
The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER found in Middletown on the 5th, was reported=20
several times this week. It frequents the area around the Middletown Histori=
cal=20
Society, Paradise School building, at the corner of Prospect and Paradise Av=
enue. =20
Another RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was found in Lincoln Woods State Park. To look=
=20
for this bird enter Lincoln Woods from Route 123, go over the new bridge,=20
then immediately go right and drive up past the recreation area to the back=20=
where=20
fireplace 1B and 1C are located. You will come to a path at the back of thi=
s=20
area that leads through the woods and runs parallel with Route 123. The=20
woodpecker was seen along this path.
A BLACK VULTURE was seen with a group of TURKEY VULTURES in Charlestown on=20
the 24th.
On the 23rd at White Brook in Carolina, 1 AMERICAN WIGEON, 1 EURASIAN WIGEON=
=20
and 12 GADWALL. At the cemetery near White Brook, 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN=20
WARBLER and 2 COMMON RAVEN were observed.
A VIRGINIA RAIL was heard calling at Genessee Swamp on the 24th, and on the=20
23rd a BLUE-WINGED TEAL was observed there. Genessee Swamp is along the Sou=
th=20
County bike trail.
At Simmons Mill in Little Compton on the 25th, 1 BALTIMORE ORIOLE, 7=20
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 3 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, 1 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, 2=20=
PALM=20
WARBLER, 1 BROAD-WINGED HAWK and 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK.
On the 22nd at Fisherville Brook Wildlife in Exeter, 1 EASTERN KINGBIRD, 1=20
BROWN THRASHER, 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 1 BROAD-WINGED HA=
WK,=20
1 PURPLE FINCH, 1 BROWN CREEPER, 1 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and 1 NORTHERN=20
WATERTHRUSH.
At Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 2 COMMON TERN, 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 6=20
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and 11 DUNLIN were reported on the 26th, and on the 23r=
d, 36=20
WILLET were seen.
At Ninigret NWR, 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO, 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and 1 AMERICAN=20
KESTREL.
A PRAIRIE WARBLER was seen behind the church on South Ferry Road in=20
Narragansett.=20
Along Ponagansett Road in Foster, 1 GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER and 1=20
BLUE-WINGED WARBLER were seen on the 28th.
New migrants reported this week include: several INDIGO BUNTING,=20
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, EASTERN TOWHEE, HOUSE WREN, and visiting feeders, RU=
BY-THROATED=20
HUMMINGBIRD.
Finally, Mike Tucker, manager of Caratunk Wildlife Refuge, helped band the=20
BALD EAGLES at the Scituate Reservoir this week. There were two eaglets in g=
ood=20
health, one male and one female. This is the second earliest hatching on=20
record in New England.=20
