This report covers the period from April 29th to May 5th, and will be= =20 updated again on May 12th. A WHITE-FACED IBIS was discovered in Jamestown on the 2nd. Only the third=20 state record, this bird was seen with over 100 GLOSSY IBIS either in the far= m=20 fields along Weeden Lane, or in adjacent Marsh Meadows. It was seen again on= the=20 3rd, however it has not been reported since that day. At the Northeast corner of Swan Point Cemetery there was 1 BLUE GROSBEAK on=20 the 1st. Birds seen on the 5th include: YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, AMERICAN=20 REDSTART, NASHVILLE WARBLER, OVENBIRD, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, BALTIMORE OR= IOLE,=20 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, HERMIT THRUSH, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER and BROWN=20 THRASHER. A SUMMER TANAGER was reported visiting a feeder in Wickford on the 2nd. =20 On the 30th at Kimball Wildlife Refuge in Charlestown, 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER= ,=20 2 BROWN THRASHER, and 1 VEERY. At Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 1 WHIMBREL, 4 WILLET, 6 GREATER YELLOWLEGS,= =20 1 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER on the 1st. Three CASPIAN TERNS were seen from the end of Moonstone Beach Road on the=20 4th. The birds were going from Card's Pond to Trustom Pond and were observe= d=20 actively plunge diving in Trustom pond. Also that day, 2 LEAST TERN and 1=20 EURASIAN WIGEON were seen at this location. Two CASPIAN TERN were located a= t=20 Trustom again on the 5th. At Point Judith in Narragansett, 2 CLIFF SWALLOW on the 4th. At the Charlestown Breachway, 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 7 GREEN-WINGED TEAL wer= e=20 seen in the pool on the East side of the channel. Also, 1 male NORTHERN=20 HARRIER and 2 SEASIDE SPARROW here on the 4th. The following birds were reported from a trip to Block Island on the 2nd: 3=20 GREAT CORMORANT, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN, 3 BLACK-CROWNED=20 NIGHT-HERON, 1 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 1 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 3 NORTHERN HA= RRIER,=20 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 1 COOPER'S HAWK, 2 BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 2 MERLIN, 2=20 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 1 LAUGHING GULL, 4 EASTERN KINGBIRD, 2 CLIFF=20 SWALLOW, 1 PURPLE MARTIN, 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 1 HERMIT THRUSH, 2=20 RED-EYED VIREO, 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 1 PRAIR= IE=20 WARBLER, 1 AMERICAN REDSTART, 4 PALM WARBLER and 3 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER,=20= 1=20 SCARLET TANAGER, 4 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, 3 INDIGO BUNTING, and 1 PURPLE FI= NCH. On the 5th at Fort Getty Campground in Jamestown, 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK was=20 observed. GREEN HERONS were reported from Wickford and South Kingstown this week. This report covers the period from May 5th to May 12th, and will be=20 updated again on May 19th. A MISSISSIPPI KITE was observed on the 12, late in the afternoon, over=20 Jamestown. The bird was seen drifting slowly to the South, not very high up,= near=20 the Jamestown Bridge. A CASPIAN TERN and a BLACK TERN were seen at Napatree Point in Westerly on=20 the 10th. A CASPIAN TERN was seen at Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem on the 8t= h. Two CATTLE EGRETS were seen along Weeden Lane in Jamestown on the 9th, and=20 one was seen on the 10th, along with about 50 GLOSSY IBIS. Several BOBOLINK=20= were=20 displaying in the fields here on the 12th. At Marsh Meadows on the 12th, 1=20 TRICOLORED HERON, 10 SNOWY EGRET, and 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON. There was anothe= r=20 report of a NORTHERN GOSHAWK on the 11th at the Newport Bridge property on t= he=20 Jamestown side. Also, on private property in Jamestown: 1 BLUE GROSBEAK, 1=20 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 1 TENNESSEE WAR= BLER=20 and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER were reported this week. A TRICOLORED HERON was reported at the Hazard Road salt marsh and along Ocea= n=20 Drive in Newport on the 12th. This report covers the period from May 13th to May 19th, and will be updated again on May 26th. This has been an amazing week for rare bird sighting in the Ocean State. A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen soaring over Block Island on the 16th. On the 18th, a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was found in Jamestown. It was seen at the dairy farm along Weeden Lane. It was observed again on the 19th. Please do not drive down the road into the farm, or climb walls or walk in the fields. With patience the bird can be seen from the main road. Also seen here: 1 EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 1 ORCHARD ORIOLE, 5 BOBOLINK and 25 GLOSSY IBIS. An unusual spring record of a LARK SPARROW at Point Judith. The bird was seen on the 19th, at Wiley's Restaurant along Ocean Road, just north of Aunt Carrie's. It was seen in the parking lot, on the lawn and in the trees here. Another rare in spring report, this time of a LITTLE GULL seen on the 14th at the salt marsh restoration area at Third Beach in Middletown. An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen here on the 19th. Four KENTUCKY WARBLERS were reported this past week. One was seen at the Great Swamp Management Area on the 14th, one was seen at the North end of Block Island on the 16th, one was at Miantonomi Park in Newport on the 15th and 16th, and one was in a yard in Saunderstown on the 17th. Birds seen on Block Island from the 15th to the 17th include: 25 species of warblers, including 1 CERULEAN WARBLER on the 17th, 1 PROTHONOTARY WARBLER, and 1 CAPE MAY WARBLER. Some single day counts of other warblers include: 45 NORTHERN PARULA, 3 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, 25 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 12 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 50 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, 6 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 8 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, 1 late PALM WARBLER, 6 BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, 12 BLACKPOLL, and 1 WILSON'S WARBLER. Other highlights include 2 adult YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 1 SUMMER TANAGER, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, 3 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 4 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and 6 INDIGO BUNTING. One PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from the ferry on the 17th. The Audubon Society of Rhode Island held it's annual Birdathon on the 14th. Highlights include: At Miantonomi Park in Newport, 1 SUMMER TANAGER. One TRICOLORED HERON at Marsh Meadows in Jamestown, and one at the Hazard Road Marsh in Newport. Two CATTLE EGRET along Weeden Lane in Jamestown. Male and female BLUE-WINGED TEAL at Genesee Swamp on the South County bike trail. A KING EIDER with 3 COMMON EIDER at Green Hill Beach. One CLIFF SWALLOW at the Great Swamp, a COMMON RAVEN at Hemlock Road in Foster, singing WINTER WREN at Eppley Wildlif e Refuge, 1 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER and 1 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH at Burlingame, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW at Ninigret, and from Swan Point, 1 TENNESSEE WARBLER, 1 WILSON'S WARBLER and 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO. On the 14th at Quonochontaug, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER. At the Charlestown Breachway on the 18th, 2 CASPIAN TERN and 1 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON. In addition to the Kentucky Warbler and Summer Tanager, a BLUE GROSBEAK was found at Miantonomi Park in Newport on the 18th. Other reports from here include: 1 ORANGE-CROWNED, 1 BLACKBURNIAN, 1 BAY-BREASTED, 2 CANADA and 2 HOODED WARBLER. Also a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO on the 17th. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was seen on private property in Jamestown on the 14th. On the 16th along Ponagansett Road in Foster: 1 ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, 3 EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, 1 HOODED WARBLER, and 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER. The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at the corner of Paradise and Prospect Avenues in Middletown. Highlights from Swan Point Cemetery in Providence include: 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 10 OVENBIRD, 12 NORTHERN PARULA, 16 BLACKPOLL, 14 BLACK-AND-WHITE, 18 MAGNOLIA, 6 BLACK-THROATED GREEN, 7 BLACK-THROATED BLUE, 8 YELLOW-RUMPED, 6 CHESTNUT-SIDED, 6 CANADA, 1 WILSON'S, 1 CAPE MAY, 1 PRAIRIE WARBLER, 6 BLACKBURNIAN, 6 NASHVILLE, 6 BAY-BREASTED, 1 HOODED WARBLER, 17 AMERICAN REDSTART, 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO, 9 SWAINSON'S THRUSH, 6 VEERY, 1 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, 4 LEAST FLYCATCHER, 1 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, 3 ORCHARD ORIOLE, 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROW, 4 INDIGO BUNTING, and a NORTHERN PINTAIL on the Seekonk River. This report covers the period from May 20th to May 27th, and will be updated again on June 2nd. The unusual cold temperatures and north east winds of the past week combined to keep bird sightings slow, especially when compared to last week's truly remarkable records. The LARK SPARROW found at Point Judith on the 19th, was seen again on the 20th, but was not found after that day. The fallout of Phalaropes due to the Northeast storm during the week did not affect Rhode Island, however 1 RED PHALAROPE was reported in Tiverton on the Sakonnet River on the 26th. An ALDER FLYCATCHER was seen at Swan Point Cemetery on the 27th. Other birds reported there this week included: 1 BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, 2 NORTHERN PARULA, 1 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, 1 WILSON'S WARBLER, 2 CANADA WARBLER, 1 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 4 BLACKPOLL WARBLER, 5 MAGNOLIA, 1 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 1 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO and 4 INDIGO BUNTING. At Trustom Pond NWR along the Otter Point Trail, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 1 BLACKPOLL WARBLER, 1 WILLOW FLYCATCHER and 2 BLUE-WINGED WARBLER on the 24th. At the feeder, 2 PURPLE FINCH continue. The SUMMER TANAGER was last reported on the 20th at Miantonomi Park in Newport. Other sightings that day included: 1 WORM-EATING WARBLER, 1 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, several BLACKPOLL, NORTHERN PARULA and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 1 EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, and 1 INDIGO BUNTING. On the 24th at Quonochontaug, 2 WHIMBREL, 2 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 34 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 20 DUNLIN, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, 2 LAUGHING GULL, and 2 SEASIDE SPARROW. On the 21st, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON was observed here as well. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen flying and calling above North Kingstown on the 22nd. In Cumberland 2 COMMON RAVEN were reported on the 23rd. Reports from Napatree Point in Westerly this week: 23 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 44 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 6 PIPING PLOVER, 5 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 96 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 130 SANDERLING, 27 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 74 LEAST SANDPIPER, 4 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 23 PURPLE SANDPIPER, 72 DUNLIN, 20 ROSEATE TERN, 10 COMMON TERN and 9 LEAST TERN. Finally a BALD EAGLE flew over the Charlestown Breachway on the 22nd.
