Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 2nd,
2005. This report covers the period from May 28th to June 2nd, and will be
updated again on June 9th.
A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER has been seen on Block Island a few times since
May 23 in the area of Charleston Beach off Coast Guard Road, just south and
west of New Harbor.
A first-year male SUMMER TANAGER was reported from a private residence in
Saunderstown on the 2nd.
On the 29th, 1 ALDER FLYCATCHER was found at Lonsdale Marsh in Lincoln.
At Miantonomi Park in Newport, 1 BLUE GROSBEAK was recorded on the 29th.
On the 28th, at Napatree Point in Westerly, 1 DICKCISSEL and 1 CLIFF SWALLOW
were observed. Other birds seen here during the week included: 3 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER, 14 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 2 PIPING PLOVER, 2 AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHER, 3 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 70 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 24 RED KNOT, 42
SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER, 2 LEAST SANDPIPER, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and 4 ROSEATE TERN.
At Quonochontaug: 1 GREEN HERON, 2 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 2 RED KNOT, 3 WHIMBREL, 1
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 95 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 2 WILLOW FLYCATCHER, 1
ORCHARD ORIOLE and 4 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW.
At the Frances Carter Preserve in Charlestown, 2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS
returned this week. One AMERICAN KESTREL and an INDIGO BUNTING were also found
here.
Two COMMON RAVEN were again reported from Cumberland, and 1 was seen flying
over Rte. 146 near Woonsocket.
In Tiverton, at Fort Barton Woods, 5 WORM-EATING WARBLER were reported on the
2nd.
On the 28th, birds seen on the cod fishing trip on the Frances Fleet out of
Galilee included: 107 WILSON'S -STORM PETREL, 138 NORTHERN GANNET, 6 NORTHERN
FULMAR and 4 SOOTY SHEARWATER.
Finally, the weeks highlights from Swan Point Cemetery: 1 BLACKBURNIAN
WARBLER, 1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE, 1 CHESTNUT-SIDED, 5 CANADA, 5 MAGNOLIA, 2
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER and 5 BLACKPOLL WARBLER, 11 AMERICAN REDSTART, 1
WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW, 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 3 GRAY-CHEEKED/BICKNELL'S THRUSH, 2 BLACK-BILLED
CUCKOO, and 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO.
The year to date species total is 270. In May, 204 species were reported,
with 67 new species added to the yearly total.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 9th,
2005. This report covers the period from June 3rd to June 9th, and will be
updated again on June 16th.
There were a few rare birds spotted this week, a normally slow time now that
the migration has slowed.
This spring there has been an incursion of PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS into New
England, with birds reported from as far out of range as Northern Vermont.
Rhode
Island now has it's 4th record, a bird singing along the South County bike
trail on the 4th and 5th. It was found between Larkin Pond Rd and the bridge
over White Horn Brook.
On the flats at the Charlestown Breachway on the 5th, a HUDSONIAN GODWIT was
seen and photographed. Also seen that day: 5 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 50
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, several WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 2 LEAST SANDPIPER, and 1
PIPING PLOVER. On the 7th: 1 ROSEATE TERN, 90 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 1 PIPING
PLOVER, 12 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 6 LEAST SANDPIPER, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 3
WILLET and 5 LAUGHING GULL.
An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was observed flying south at Scarborough Beach in
Narragansett on the 8th.
At the Third Beach restoration area in Middletown, 1 CASPIAN TERN was resting
on the flats with gulls on the 8th and on the 9th there were 2 CASPIAN TERNS
there.
On the 5th at the Francis Carter Preserve in Charlestown, 3 GRASSHOPPER
SPARROW, 5 INDIGO BUNTING and 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO.
At the Great Swamp Management Area in South Kingstown on the 5th, 1 ALDER
FLYCATCHER, 1 BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS, 6 BLUE-WINGED
WARBLER, 1 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER and 1 CANADA WARBLER.
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was reported from the southern end of Jamestown on the
3rd.
Finally, a birder working on a lobster boat on the 2nd, who went out
approximately 75 miles just east of due south off of
Point Judith reported the following: 1 ATLANTIC PUFFIN, 226 WILSON'S STORM
PETREL, 1 LEACH'S STORM PETREL, 67 SOOTY SHEARWATER, 38 GREATER SHEARWATER, 32
NORTHERN GANNET, 22 NORTHERN FULMAR, and 52 RED PHALAROPE.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 16th,
2005. This report covers the period from June 10th to June 16th. The next
update will be in two weeks on June 30th.
A WILSON'S PLOVER was found in Portsmouth on the 13th. It was seen on a lawn
on the South side of Sandy Point Ave, two houses up from the beach. Another
WILSON'S PLOVER (probably the same bird) was found at Napatree Point in the
early morning of the 15th. It was not relocated later in the day or the next
day.
The Third Beach Saltmarsh Restoration area in Middletown is proving to be a
great place to find unusual shorebirds, terns and gulls. One to three CASPIAN
TERNS have been reported roosting with the gulls on an off all week. Other
highlights include: LITTLE BLUE HERON, 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 2 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 1 BONAPARTE'S GULL
and 4 LAUGHING GULL.
Three CATTLE EGRETS were seen and photographed at the Charlestown Breachway
on the 15th.
Birds reported at Napatree Point this week include: 5 PIPING PLOVERS, 1
KILLDEER, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 1 RED KNOT, 2 WILLET, 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPER,

RUDDY TURNSTONE, 93 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 8 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 DUNLIN,
1 LAUGHING
GULL, 10 ROSEATE TERN, 6 COMMON TERN and 7 LEAST TERN. On the 12th, an
ICELAND GULL was spotted.
At Bungalow Point in Jamestown, which is the Northwest corner of Sheffield
Cove, 1 ORCHARD ORIOLE and 1 INDIGO BUNTING.
Finally at Trustom Pond NWR, 1 WOOD DUCK with 5 young was observed, and 3
PURPLE FINCH were seen at the feeder.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 30th,
2005. This report covers the period from June 17th to June 30th. The next
update will be in two weeks on July 14th.
A ROYAL TERN was found at the Charlestown Breachway on the 17th, and lingered
until the 18th. Other birds seen include: 5 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER on the
17th, 1 TRICOLORED HERON on the 17th and 19th. On the 19th: 3 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER, 3 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 1 ROSEATE TERN, 1 GLOSSY IBIS, and 1
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON. On the 21st: 6 GLOSSY IBIS and 3 GREEN HERON were
found.
At Third Beach Restoration area in Middletown, 1 SNOWY EGRET, 1 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, 2 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 1 BONAPARTE'S
GULL and 1 CASPIAN TERN on the 17th. The Caspian Tern was seen again on the
18th and 19th. Two AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER were seen here on the 22nd. Three
BONAPARTE'S GULL were observed on the 28th and on the 30th, 1 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS and 3 LAUGHING GULL frequented the area.
An unusual (given the time of year) sighting of a BUFFLEHEAD came from the
Seekonk River on the 19th.
A MURRE species, tentatively identified as a THICK-BILLED MURRE was observed
at Camp Cronin in Narragansett on the 24th and 26th.
On the 29th at Napatree Point in Westerly, 1 adult ICELAND GULL near the
outer end of the point on the bay side. Also, 6 PIPING PLOVER, 10 AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHER, 2 WILLET, 3 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 7 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 2 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER, 2 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 1 LAUGHING GULL, 1 BONAPARTE'S GULL, 13 ROSEATE
TERN, 30 COMMON TERN, 3 LEAST TERN and 1 PURPLE MARTIN.
At Sachuest Point In Middletown on the 29th, 2 immature NORTHERN GANNET.
At Black Point in Narragansett on the 30th, 3 COMMON EIDER, 3 SURF SCOTER and
6 WILSON'S STORM-PETREL.
