Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for August 4th,
2005. This report covers the period from July 29th to August 4th, and will be
updated again on August 11th.
Highlights from the last week include a SANDWICH TERN, a ROYAL TERN, and a
brief sighting of a probable immature FRANKLIN'S GULL.
The FRANKLIN'S GULL was sighted at the Charlestown Breachway on the 29th.
Other reports from the Breachway this week included: 3 WHIMBREL, 2 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 8 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER,
2
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 RED KNOT, 250 COMMON TERN, 4 ROSEATE TERN and 1
BLACK TERN.
On the 30th, a SANDWICH TERN was found on a small sandbar in Ninigret Pond in
Charlestown. A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen in the pond.
A ROYAL TERN was reported at Third Beach Restoration Area in Middletown on
the 3rd. Also observed here during the past week: 4 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 58
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 5 KILLDEER, 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 4
LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 3 WILLET, 20 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 36 SANDERLING, 75 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER, 5 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 1 WHIMBREL, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 149
LAUGHING GULL, 1 BONAPARTE'S GULL and a PEREGRINE FALCON.
Several BLACK SKIMMERS were spotted at Winnapaug Pond in Westerly on the
28th.
On the 1st, at the Hazard Road salt marsh in Newport, 2 LITTLE BLUE HERON, 2
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, and 1 MARSH WREN.
At Avondale Farm in Westerly, 4 EASTERN MEADOWLARK and a BOBOLINK were found
this week.
Three COMMON RAVEN were found on a light pole along Route 295 near Route 7 in
Smithfield.
Finally, on a whale watch out of Galilee, 3 WILSON'S STORM PETREL, 1 GREATER
SHEARWATER and a PARASITIC JAEGER. From a fishing boat, a CORY'S SHEARWATER
was observed on the 1st.
The number of species reported in July was 138. Including common species not
reported the total was 145. New species reported; 9, Species year-to-date

2005. This report covers the period from August 5th to August 11th, and will

Shorebird sightings predominate again this week.
Observations from the Charlestown Breachway include 1 ROYAL TERN and a
WILSON'S PHALAROPE on the 5th, and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER on the 11th. High
counts of Other more regular birds seen here this week include: 245 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, 5 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 200 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 1 PECTORAL
SANDPIPER, 27 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 14 PIPING PLOVER, 23 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 2 BLACK
TERN,
1 FORSTER'S TERN, 10 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 1 WHIMBREL,
66 SANDERLING, and approximately 300 COMMON TERN.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 6th: 5 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 195
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 PIPING PLOVER, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 6 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS,
4 WILLET, 14 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 135 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 1 RED KNOT, 160
SANDERLING, 1
WESTERN SANDPIPER, 300 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 2 ROSEATE TERN, 120 COMMON
TERN and 5 LEAST TERN.
On the 5th at Wickford Marsh, 3 LITTLE BLUE HERON.
LAUGHING GULL numbers are building at Third beach Restoration Area in
Middletown with between 400 and 500 being reported. Four BONAPARTE'S GULL, 1
BLACK
TERN, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER were reported along with the
more common shorebirds this week.
The breeding plumaged RED-NECKED GREBE continues at Ninigret Pond in
Charlestown.
On the 5th at Andy's Way on Block Island, a WHIMBREL was observed.
A BLACK VULTURE was seen in South Kingston on the 6th.
Finally, on the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Shark Safari out of Galilee,
12 miles southeast of Block Island, 1 GREATER SHEARWATER and 40 WILSON'S
STORM-PETREL were found on the 8th.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for August 18th,
2005. This report covers the period from August 12th to August 18th.
MARBLED GODWITS were seen at three locations this past week. One bird was
found at Quonochontaug Breachway in Charlestown on the 13th, and was still being
seen on the 18th. A MARBLED GODWIT was seen at the Charlestown Breachway
mudflats on the 13th, and eight individuals were sighted there on the 17th.
Another sighting was had at Third Beach Restoration area in Middletown on the
17th.
A WILSON'S PHALAROPE was found at Trustom Pond NWR on the 18th. It was seen
from the platform at Otter Point feeding along the shore of the pond with 2
GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
Four UPLAND SANDPIPERS were sighted at the turf farm along Switch Road
opposite Chariho High School on the 13th, and 3 continued to be seen there on
the
14th. A single UPLAND SANDPIPER was found on the turf fields at Heaton Orchard
on the 16th, and on the 15th, 10 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPER
were seen.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER with 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was reported at
Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem on the 16th. On the 17th, an AMERICAN BITTERN was
found
in the marsh.
In the Slocum section of North Kingston, on the turf farm along Indian Corner
Road, 3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were viewed on the 13th. On the 14th, 1
BUFF-BREASTED and 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPER were found here.
On the 14th at Napatree Point in Westerly: 2 COMMON LOON, 20 BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER, 210 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 PIPING PLOVER, 22 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 6
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 90 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 100 SANDERLING,
12O SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 9 LEAST SANDPIPER, 170 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. On
the 13th there was a sighting of a BLACK TERN.
Highlights from the Charlestown Breachway include: 12 BLACK-CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 2
RED KNOT, 6 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 2 WHIMBREL, 15 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 10
RUDDY TURNSTONE, 4 PIPING PLOVER, 250 COMMON TERN, 10 ROSEATE TERN, and 2 BLACK
TERN.
A COMMON RAVEN was spotted in northern Rhode Island, near the Woonsocket
Reservoir.
Several CORY'S SHEARWATER have been observed from Block Island.
On ASRI's Shark Safari on the 15th, 20 WILSON'S STORM PETREL, 2 NORTHERN
GANNET, 20 CORY'S SHEARWATER, 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER and
1 GREATER SHEARWATER.
