Shorebirds again dominate the reports of the past two weeks, with one report= =20 from Block Island of landbird migrants. The most unusual bird of the period was a RED PHALAROPE accurately described= =20 at the Third Beach Restoration in Middletown on the 31st.=A0 It was seen for= =20 only a brief time, that day only.=A0 Other sightings here included:=A0 1 RED= -BREASTED=20 MERGANSER, 16 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 25 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 1 GREATER=20 YELLOWLEGS, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 2 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 4 RUDDY TURNSTONE= , 40=20 SANDERLING, 160 LAUGHING GULL and 6 BONAPARTE'S GULL. Five HUDSONIAN GODWIT were seen on the 31st at the Charlestown Breachway.= =A0=20 These birds were sighted on that day only, and they were joined by 5 MARBLED= =20 GODWITS.=A0 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS have been seen here on several differen= t days=20 over the past two weeks, the most seen was 4 on the 27th.=A0=A0 Other highli= ghts=20 included: 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 1 MERLIN, 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 3 WESTERN=20 SANDPIPER, 6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 3 RED KNOT, 6 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 2 BAI= RD'S=20 SANDPIPER, 4 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 1 WHIMBREL, 1 juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED=20 NIGHT-HERON, 1 CASPIAN TERN, 2 FORSTER'S TERN and 2 BLACK TERN.=A0=20 On the 30th, 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 1 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 1 WESTERN=20 SANDPIPER, 43 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and 23 LESSER=20 YELLOWLEGS were spotted along Heaton Orchard Road in Richmond. On the 31st,=20 10 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER were counted here. Along the Switch Road sod farms in Chariho, 1 UPLAND SANDPIPER on the 22nd=20 and the 24th, and 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER on the 30th. Six BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were found on the turf fields in Slocum on the=20 30th, and 9 were seen on the 1st.. On the 31st, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 1= =20 AMERICAN KESTREL, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON and a COMMON RAVEN were seen.=20 An AMERICAN BITTERN was seen in the cove to the West among the cut phragmite= s=20 at the end of Otter Point Trail at Trustom Pond NWR on the 25th.=A0=20 At the North end of Green End Pond in Middletown, 3 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 1=20 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 2 DUNLIN, and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER. On the 20th at Marsh Meadows in Jamestown, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON and 2 CATTLE=20 EGRET. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen migrating in several location over the last two=20 weeks, with the highest number reported from Greenville. An EASTERN SCREECH-OWL has been heard calling in Barrington, near North Lake= =20 Drive. On a dedicated pelagic on the Captain Frances boat out of Galilee on the=20 24th, the following were seen: 1 LEACH'S STORM-PETREL, 56 WILSON'S STORM PET= REL, 6=20 CORY'S SHEARWATER, 1 AUDUBON'S SHEARWATER, 1 LONG-TAILED JAEGER and 2=20 NORTHERN GANNET. From the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's Shark Safari out to 15 miles ESE=20 of Block Island, 1 COMMON LOON, over 10 CORY'S SHEARWATER, 3 GREATER=20 SHEARWATER, 2 NORTHERN GANNET, 40 WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, 1 BLACK-HEADED GULL= and 1=20 FORSTER'S TERN.=A0 The trip was on the 29th. Finally, from the Block Island ferry on the 23rd, 5 CORY'S SHEARWATER and on= =20 Block Island: 1 NORTHERN PARULA, 25 YELLOW WARBLER, 2 CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER= ,=20 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, 3 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, 1= =20 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 1 BLACKPOLL WARBLER, 12 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLE= R,=20 20 AMERICAN REDSTART, 1 OVENBIRD, and 1 CANADA WARBLER. The total species count for the year is 299. The count for August was 126,=20 with 10 new species reported. A high count of 22 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER was observed on the sod farm along Indian Corner Road in Slocum on the 2nd. There was also 6 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER. On the 8th, in a large puddle on the turf field along Switch Road, north of Chariho High School, 1 STILT SANDPIPER, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 26 LEAST SANDPIPER, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER. At the Charlestown Breachway: 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 1 CASPIAN TERN, 1 BLACK TERN, 1 FOSTER'S TERN, 2 ROSEATE TERN, 1 WHIMBREL, 5 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 15 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 5 MARBLED GODWIT and 1 RED KNOT. On the 3rd, 1 COMMON RAVEN was spotted flying over Route 1 in South Kingston. Another Raven was reported near the waterfall along Ponagansett Road in Foster, and a WILSON'S WARBLER was found on the hillside above the waterfall. Two SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER and 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen from Ponagansett Bridge on the Barden reservoir. On the 2nd, a high count of 152 COMMON NIGHTHAWK in North Smithfield. Reports from Trustom Pond this week included: 1 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, 1 BROWN THRASHER, 3 BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, 3 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 3 WHITE-EYED VIREO, 4 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 1 PRAIRIE WARBLER, 1 MAGNOLIA WARBLER, 1 CANADA WARBLER and 2 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 5 GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 6 WOOD DUCK on the pond. The second week in September is their usual departure date. One was seen on the 12th at Quonochontaug, and 4 were seen at Third Beach Restoration Area on the 13th. The Northwest winds over the weekend brought a small wave of passerine migrants to our area. In Glocester, in the George Washington Management Area and adjoining Pulaski Park a CONNECTICUT WARBLER was found on the 11th. Other warblers found that day included: 7 NORTHERN PARULA, 2 CHESTNUT-SIDED, 3 MAGNOLIA, 3 BLACK-THROATED BLUE, 3 BAY-BREASTED, 4 BLACKBURNIAN, and 118 BLACKPOLL. Also: 6 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 1 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, 1 PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 40 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, 1 PURPLE FINCH and the first DARK-EYED JUNCO. On the 10th along Rams Tail Road in Foster, 1 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, 1 BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 1 HERMIT THRUSH and 6 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was found at Rome Point in North Kingston on the 13th. At Walker's Farm in Barrington on the 11th, 1 PURPLE FINCH, 6 INDIGO BUNTING, 4 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and 1 WARBLING VIREO. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, 1 SAVANNAH SPARROW, and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW were found on the 15th. Three MARBLED GODWIT are lingering on the flats at the Charlestown Breachway. Other sightings this week included: 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 6 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 1 PIPING PLOVER, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 5 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 DUNLIN, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 1 WHIMBREL and 1 AMERICAN PIPIT. On the 14th at Napatree Point in Westerly, 3 COMMON LOON, 190 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, 26 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 1 PIPING PLOVER, 14 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 2 WHIMBREL, 8 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 2 RED KNOT, 7 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, and 3 LEAST TERN. At Arnold's Mills Reservoir in Cumberland on the 11th a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found along with a WILSON'S SNIPE, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER. A COMMON RAVEN was also seen nearby. At the Switch Road turf farms in Chariho, 11 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER were found in the plowed field on the 13th. Finally, on a dedicated pelagic out of Galilee Harbor, to about 30 miles south of Block Island, 1 SABINE'S GULL, 2 NORTHERN GANNET, 27 WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, 1 RED PHALAROPE, 1 BLACK TERN and 3 CORY'S SHEARWATER. This report covers the period from September 16th to September 22nd and will be updated again on the 29th. Trustom Pond NWR in South Kingstown hosted several CONNECTICUT WARBLERS this past week. The first was seen along the Osprey Point trail on the 16th. Another one was seen in the same general area on the 19th, and three were seen on the 22nd. A SEDGE WREN was accurately described on the 18th. This bird was seen and heard in the Southwest corner of the large field. Other sightings from Trustom included: CAPE MAY WARBLER, HOODED WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, many BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, and BLUE-HEADED VIREO. The weeds at Walker's Farm in Barrington continue to attract many birds, most notable this week was a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW on the 19th and a DICKCISSEL seen on the 18th and 21st. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was also seen. At nearby Osamequin Wildlife Refuge 1 adult YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen on the 19th, and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO was observed on the 22nd. At Napatree Point in Westerly, 1 DICKCISSEL and a SORA were reported on the 18th. Other birds at Napatree this week included: 1 MERLIN, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, 1 WHIMBREL, 8 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 RED KNOT, 4 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, 4 FORSTER'S TERN, 1 MARSH WREN, 1 BOBOLINK, 1 SEASIDE SPARROW and 1 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW. Finally, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen near the marsh behind the cemetery at the junction of Ram's Tail Road and Route 6 in Foster. A SANDHILL CRANE was observed on the 25th at Third Beach Restoration Area in Middletown. Two CASPIAN TERN were seen there on the 25th, 26th, and the 28th. On the 27th, 2 CASPIAN TERN were seen at Camp Cronin in the Point Judith section of Narragansett. At a hawk watch at Napatree Point on the 27th: 37 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 6 COOPER'S HAWK, 7 AMERICAN KESTREL, 1 MERLIN, 1 NORTHERN HARRIER and 8 OSPREY were recorded. On the 24th at Napatree: 15 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 37 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 5 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 86 SANDERLING, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 1 MARSH WREN, 2 SAVANNAH SPARROW, 2 SWAMP SPARROW, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and 1 BOBOLINK. Two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were seen along the Seekonk River in Providence several times this week. At Avondale Farm Preserve in Westerly, 3 AMERICAN PIPIT on the 26th. At Heaton Orchard Road in Richmond, 15 AMERICAN PIPIT on the 25th. On the 24th at Watchemoket Cove in East Providence, 1 EURASIAN WIGEON. Several birding groups made visits to Block Island last week. A good flight of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was observed, as well as PALM WARBLERS. Twenty-two species of warbler were counted. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was banded on the 24th. Among the warblers noted were 3 CAPE MAY WARBLER, 1 TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, MAGNOLIA, PRAIRIE, CHESTNUT-SIDED, BLACKBURNIAN, WILSON'S WARBLER, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and 1 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. Three PHILADELPHIA VIREO and 1 WHITE-EYED VIREO were seen at the North End. An AMERICAN BITTERN was found at Seneca Swamp, and WHIMBREL were sighted at the North End, and at Andy's Way. Raptors included several MERLIN, 2 PEREGRINE FALCON and 1 AMERICAN KESTREL.
