Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for February 3rd,
2006. This report covers the period from January 28th to February 3rd, and
will be updated again on February 9th.
The MEW GULL discovered on the 6th at Watchemoket Cove in East Providence was
last seen on the 29th. The report from that day is that the bird was seen on
the flats behind the Watchemoket Cove pump station. It was close to shore for
a short time, then it flew to the South down Narragansett Bay. At 2pm, the
MEW GULL was observed at Salter Grove park along Narragansett Parkway in
Warwick. The gull is possibly still in the Greater Providence area, as it has
reappeared after having been absent for 2-3 days in the past. To search for the
bird here are the directions: Watchemoket Cove is on Veterans Memorial Parkway
in East Providence. From Route 195 east, take Exit 4 and bear right onto
Veterans Memorial Parkway. The cove is approximately 1 1/2 miles from the
highway.
The bird has also been seen from the East Bay bike path feeding in the river
below the large ray building with blue doors. To reach the East Bay bike path,
park in the parking lot up the hill from Watchemoket Cove and walk down the
path (going south) to the open river. Scope across the river and look for the
gulls feeding in the water below. Please report the bird if you find it, as
interest is still high. Five BLACK-HEADED GULL continue to be seen in the area,
and on the 27th, a GREAT HORNED OWL was seen along the bike path near the
Squantum Club.
At the East Providence Reservoir along Route 152 at the East
Providence/Seekonk line: On the 29th and the 2nd, 1 GLAUCOUS GULL, on the 29th,
1 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL and on the 28th, 124 CANVASBACK and 3 REDHEAD.
On the 2nd, 2 COMMON RAVEN were observed calling and flying above Route 99 at
the Woonsocket/Cumberland line. Another COMMON RAVEN was observed in
Carolina on the 28th.
In a field along Dunns Corner Road in Westerly a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE
was found on the 28th, and was seen in the same location on the 29th. At the
dairy farm off Noyes Road also in Westerly, 3 KILLDEER, 3 AMERICAN PIPIT and 1
AMERICAN WOODCOCK were reported on the 28th. Seven LONG-TAILED DUCK were
seen at the Watch Hill Lighthouse on the 29th and the 1st, and 15 SNOW BUNTING
were also spotted there on the lawn.
At Sachuest Point in Middletown on the 2nd, 64 COMMON LOON, 48 HARLEQUIN DUCK
and 1 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE. On the 27th, a SHORT-EARED OWL was reported. The
staff at the refuge confirms that the owl is seen almost daily after 3 PM.
Also in Middletown, along East Main Road in Middletown on the 26th, 1 SNOW GOOSE
was seen with 75 CANADA GEESE.
At Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN and a SHORT-EARED OWL
were found on the 28th.

and the YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER.
Finally, a report from Block Island on the 28th included a EURASIAN WIGEON
and 1 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON.
The total number of species reported for the month is 147. (Thanks to Dave
