Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for April 6,
2006. This report covers the period from March 31st to April 6th and will be
updated on April 13th.
A SNOWY OWL was found perched on a power pole beside the new grassland along
the road to Sachuest Point NWR in Middletown on the 5th. It was reported by
several observers around the area that day. On the 6th, it was sitting on the
mud flat at the restoration area at Third Beach. Other birds there included,
5 PIPING PLOVER, 6 SANDERLING, 2 DUNLIN, 1 GLOSSY IBIS and 2 NORTHERN GANNET.
At Sachuest on the 2nd, 2 AMERICAN KESTREL, and on the 5th, 2 SAVANNAH
SPARROW.
In the Escoheag section of Arcadia Management Area, 1 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH
was found and photographed on the 2nd. This very early date ties the record
set in 1986. Also on the 2nd, 2 PILEATED WOODPECKER, and on the 1st, 1 NORTHERN
GOSHAWK were reported from Arcadia.
On the 1st, 2 BLACK VULTURE were spotted flying south over Ashaway in
Hopkinton.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on the West side of the Newport Bridge on the
6th.
At Succotash Marsh in Jerusalem, 2 GLOSSY IBIS and 1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS were
reported on the 1st.
At the salt marshes along the Palmer River in Barrington near the Swansea
line, 25 GLOSSY IBIS, 1 WILSON'S SNIPE, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 8 OSPREY were
reported on the 2nd.
At Nicholas Farm Management area in Coventry on the 2nd, 20 PINE WARBLER, 7
PURPLE FINCH and 2 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET.
At the East Providence Reservoir on the 1st, 2 NORTHERN SHOVELER, 15 WOOD
DUCK, 2 AMERICAN WIGEON, 11 GADWALL, 7 GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, 22 TREE SWALLOW, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE and 1 AMERICAN KESTREL. Also on the
1st, in upper Narragansett Bay, 1 GLAUCOUS GULL
and 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.
PINE WARBLER, WILD TURKEY, GREAT EGRET and GLOSSY IBIS were reported from
many locations this past week.

2006. This report covers the period from April 7th to April 13th and will b=

A female RUFF (Reeve) was discovered at the Great Swamp Management Area in=20
South Kingstown on the 12th. It was seen feeding on the small scattered=20
mudflats in the impoundment area. It was searched for, but not relocated th=
e next=20
day. Other birds seen at the Great Swamp included: 3 WILSON'S SNIPE, 2=20
KILLDEER, 3 AMERICAN KESTREL several SWAMP SPARROW, 1 CHIPPING SPARROW, 3 F=
IELD=20
SPARROW, 5 EASTERN TOWHEE, 2 PALM WARBLER, 4 EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 2 RED-SHOULDE=
RED=20
HAWK, 1 BARN SWALLOW and 2 NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW.
A female WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was found at a feeder in the Rumford section=
=20
of East Providence on the 13th. The owner is graciously inviting birders to=
=20
view his feeders from the road behind his house. He lives at 194 Hoyt Ave.=20
From Hoyt Ave off Route 114, take Barberry Rd, then a right onto Beech St. T=
he=20
house is the 4th house on the right, a red ranch with a gray roof.
The SNOWY OWL first reported on the 5th at Third Beach Restoration area in=20
Middletown has been observed every day this week. It moves from Sachuest Po=
int,=20
at one point it was seen sitting on the roof of a building there, to the=20
Restoration Area at Third Beach. Also seen here, 4 PIPING PLOVER, 6 SNOWY E=
GRET,=20
and an AMERICAN KESTREL. At Second Beach, 12 RUDDY TURNSTONE on the 10th.
A TRICOLORED HERON was found at Sheffield Cove in Jamestown on the 8th. At=20
Marsh Meadows in Jamestown, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON, and 70 GLOSSY IBIS were see=
n=20
on the 9th, and on the 11th, a MARSH WREN was vocalizing at Sheffield Cove.
On the 9th at Ninigret Pond, 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.
At Miantonomi Park in Newport, 3 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER were recorded on=20
the 11th.
In Bristol, at ASRI=E2=80=99s Environmental Education Center, 3 MARSH WREN a=
nd 3=20
SWAMP SPARROW on the 12th.
At the East Providence Reservoir on the 11th, 1 male NORTHERN SHOVELER was=20
found among the more common ducks.
At Roger Williams Park in Providence on the 9th, 2 OVENBIRD, 1 YELLOW-BELLIE=
D=20
SAPSUCKER and 10 WOOD DUCK were reported.
On the 11th at Pulaski Park in Glocester, 1 WINTER WREN, and in the marsh=20
near the Ponagansett River fishing access, 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRD and 1 PURPLE FI=
NCH.
Finally, a count done at Napatree on the 10th yielded: 240 BRANT, 70 COMMON=20
EIDER, 3 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 4 RUDDY TURNSTONE,=20=
31=20
SANDERLING, 13 PURPLE SANDPIPER and 42 DUNLIN.

The female WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL that was found at a feeder in the Rumford=20
section of East Providence on the 13th, was seen again on the 14th. =20
The SNOWY OWL first reported on the 5th at Third Beach Restoration area in=20
Middletown was last reported on the 18th. It has been seen at the Restorati=
on=20
Area and around Sachuest Point. On the 17th at Sachuest: 1 AMERICAN KESTREL=
, 3=20
RED-THROATED LOON, 1 NORTHERN GANNET, 4 HARLEQUIN DUCK and 5 BLACK SCOTER. =20
In Portsmouth, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was seen on Jepson Lane that day.
On the 15, two COMMON RAVEN were observed as they flew over Greenville.
At the Hazard Road salt marsh in Newport on the 17th, 1 TRICOLORED HERON and=
=20
2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL. On the 19th, a 1st year BALD EAGLE was seen there.
At Marsh Meadows in Jamestown on the 15th, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON and 40 GLOSSY=
=20
IBIS.
At Succotash Marsh, 1 LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported on the 20th.
A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was observed calling and flying north over upper=
=20
Narragansett Bay on the 19th.
On the 18th, at ASRI=E2=80=99s EEC in Bristol, 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and 2 M=
ARSH WREN=20
along the boardwalk. Just to the North, at Jacob=E2=80=99s Point, 1 WILSON'S=
SNIPE=20
was seen in the marsh.
At Lonsdale Marsh in Lincoln on the 18th, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN, 3 VIRGINIA=20
RAIL, 4 SWAMP SPARROW and 8 WOOD DUCK.
Also on the 18th, at Long Pond in Hopkinton, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPER.
From northern Rhode Island on the 16th: at Durfee Hill, 1 BROAD-WINGED HAWK,=
=20
2 EASTERN BLUEBIRD, 1 KILLDEER, 2 OSPREY, 1 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER and 1=20
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. On Ponagansett Road in Foster, 2 LOUISIANA WATERTHRU=
SH, and=20
at Barden Reservoir, 1 BALD EAGLE.
A PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen at the corner of Durfee Hill Road and Chestnu=
t=20
Hill Road in Glocester. This is a late report, the bird was seen on the=20
12th.
CHIPPING SPARROW reports were widespread this week, and the 1st report of a=20
BLUE-HEADED VIREO came from East Providence on the 17th.
A report from Napatree Point in Westerly on the 19th included: 50 BRANT, 2=20
COMMON EIDER, 3 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 2 PIPING PLOVER, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATC=
HER=20
and 2 DUNLIN. On the 20th, 2 CASPIAN TERN and 1 SEASIDE SPARROW were=20
reported. At Avondale Farm Preserve, 1 WILSON'S SNIPE, seen on the 20th.
Finally, a WHIP-POOR-WILL was heard calling in Perryville on the 20th.

Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for April 27,
2006. This report covers the period from April 21th to April 27th and will be
updated on May 4th.
A SANDHILL CRANE was found on the 27th in Little Compton. It was seen
feeding in a corn field along Willow Avenue, just north of the commons.
On the 22nd, a TRICOLORED HERON was found at Otter Point, at Trustom Pond
NWR. Other birds recorded here during the week included: 1 PURPLE FINCH, 1
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 2 YELLOW WARBLER, 1 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, 1 NORTHERN
PARULA, 1
WOOD THRUSH, 1 BROWN THRASHER, 2 CHIMNEY SWIFT, 1 GREEN HERON, 2 PURPLE
MARTIN and 1 EASTERN KINGBIRD.
Another TRICOLORED HERON was seen on the 25th and 26th at Succotash Marsh in
Jerusalem. Also seen here were 1 VIRGINIA RAIL, 4 LITTLE BLUE HERON, 2 GREEN
HERON, 1 WILLET, 6 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 2 DUNLIN and 7
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER.
At St. Mary's Pond in Portsmouth, 5 CASPIAN TERN and 2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were
observed on the 26th.
One CASPIAN TERN was found at the Charlestown Breachway on the 26th along
with 14 PIPING PLOVER, 4 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 11 LEAST SANDPIPER, 7 WILLET and 4
GREATER YELLOWLEGS. On the 25th, a COMMON TERN was reported there. A RUFF
was reported from there on the 27th (details pending).
On the 26th at Arcadia Management Area in Exeter, 1 RUFFED GROUSE, 3
LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, 2 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, 2
BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 20 PURPLE FINCHES, 2 BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 1 AMERICAN
WOODCOCK, 1 PILEATED WOODPECKER and 2 HAIRY
WOODPECKER. On the 22nd, a BARRED OWL was heard calling.
A PILEATED WOODPECKER was seen along Ponagansett Road in Foster on the 27th.
ON the 26th, an ORCHARD ORIOLE was reported in a yard in Charlestown.
At Rome Point in North Kingstown, 3 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 1 BLACK-THROATED
GREEN WARBLER, 1 SCARLET TANAGER on the 25th
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS showed up at feeders in our area this week, with
the first report on the 25th.
BROAD-WINGED HAWKS were also widely reported this week, and HOUSE WRENS were
reported from a few areas as well.
