Welcome to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's bird alert for June 8,
2006. This report covers the period from June 2nd to June 8th and will be
updated on
June 15th.
Reports are slim this week due to the end of spring migration, plus the
rainy and foggy conditions that persisted this week.
The highlight of the week was a report of a female BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE on
the 2nd. It was found in the saltmarsh adjacent to the flats at Ninigret
(Charlestown Breachway). It was not found after that day.
On the 6th, 6 RED CROSSBILLS, including female/juvenile types, were briefly
seen at Arcadia Management Area in Exeter. They were heard calling and then
observed as they briefly landed in a pine tree. Also seen that day was an
ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and 2 INDIGO BUNTING.
At Napatree Point in Westerly on the 6th, 2 BRANT, 4 RED-BREASTED MERGANSER,
3 COMMON LOON, 8 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 3 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 5 PIPING
PLOVER, 2
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPER, 46 RUDDY TURNSTONE, 1 RED KNOT,
45 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER.
On a chartered dedicated pelagic to Mud Hole and Cox's Ledge on the 4th, 55
SOOTY SHEARWATER, 1 MANX SHEARWATER, 9-10 NORTHERN GANNET, 250 WILSON'S
STORM-PETREL and 6 COMMON LOON were recorded.
The total count of species reported in Rhode Island through the end of May
is 273. (thanks to Dave Gumbley for the statistics.)
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island offers many walks and special field
trips, some non-bird related, open to both members and non-members. Call
headquarters at 401-949-5454 for a copy of the Audubon Report.
