[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Common and Hoary Redpolls From: "Bruce M. Bowman" <bbowman99(AT)comcast.net> Date: 1 Mar 2008 12:15pm http://www.adn.com/adn/weak/wearkive/we000507.htm The article at the above link was referenced by Bill Whan on the ohio- birds list. Bill's summary: "Recommended is an article from the Anchorage Daily News about a local naturalist who's banded over 20,000 redpolls in his back yard. Among the many interesting features is his experience with hoary vs. common redpolls. He avows that even after tens of thousands of encounters, he can't tell them reliably apart except in the hand, when he can take measurements; plumage characters seemingly overlap completely. Among the first 500 redpolls he banded this year, 71% were determined to be hoaries! "He regards commons and hoaries as conspecific." Bruce ------------------------------------ Bruce M. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Ross's Goose not seen this morning From: Catherine Carroll <songsparrow(AT)wowway.com> Date: 1 Mar 2008 1:43pm Around 9:30 am I briefly looked for the Ross's Goose at Island Park. There were a few Canadas, but I didn't see the Ross's. There were two Am. Black Ducks in the water near the bridge here. I had a cursory look around Gallup Park near the wood auto bridge and saw two Trumpeter Swans among Mutes and Mallards. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Re: Common and Hoary Redpolls From: "Russell Emmons" <birdeland(AT)pasty.net> Date: 1 Mar 2008 2:27pm It still seems strange to me that very small percentage of dead, injured, or even the bands are ever retreived or found of any species, given the numbers such as stated here just with his Redpolls banded! Over the many years and many birds of many species at our feeders I've only seen a few with bands on them. Our daughter and son-in-law did find a dead Cowbird in their yard near Capac MI a few years back. They sent the band in and it was banded in Carlisle Pennsylvania! From: Kristen Columbus <kebc77(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 1 Mar 2008 1:45pm ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Hello birders! There is a single Horned Grebe that was sighted this afternoon in Indian Crossing Trails Park, Tecumseh. Use the Burt. St. entrance to the park, not the M-50 entrance. The bird is in the pond to your right as you get to the bottom of the hill and have the dam/bridge in front of you. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Bohemian Waxwings - Livingston County - 3/1/08 From: lyle.hamilton(AT)gm.com Date: 1 Mar 2008 6:42pm This is a multipart message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Birders, I was able to locate a single Bohemian Waxwing today in a flock of around 15 Cedars. The flock was feeding on crab apples along the east side of Dakota Dr. The bird would fly into the crab apples, eat a couple of apples, and then fly back into the pine trees next to the small apple orchard. It would sometimes be 10 minutes between flights back into the mini orchard. I first found the bird around 11 AM and it was still present at 12:30 PM when I left the area. Livingston county birders have been checking this spot regularly as it consistently holds Cedars. This is the first Bohemian that was found. Attempts at around 1:30 PM did not produce Waxwings of either type. John Lowrey however returned to the area around 5:30 PM and reported no fewer than 14 Bohemians and a token Cedar. With a fair amount of fruit left on these trees, this will hopefully be a reliable spot over the next few days. Dakota Dr. is a cul-de-sac about two blocks long and the orchard is on the right side (east) about half way down this road. Dakota Dr. is in Hamburg township and runs north off of Swarthout Road about one block west of where Chilson Road intersects Swarthout Road from the north. For reference, this area is roughly located on the south side of the Brighton Sate Recreation area. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS IN MACOMB COUNTY From: Alan Ryff <alryff(AT)sbcglobal.net> Date: 1 Mar 2008 7:07pm ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- I observed three Bohemian Waxwings between 5:25 PM and 5:35 PM on Calmar Drive, an east-west dead end street, in Section 6 of Washington Township, Macomb County. Calmar Drive is the first street south of 32 Mile Road and is accessed from Dequindre Road. Initially the three Bohemians were perched with a Starling at the very top of a Populus behind 200 Calmar Drive. They then flew east along Calmar and joined up with 17 Cedar Waxwings, 10 house Finches and two Robins, perching in a tree in a rather large open expanse between houses. From the street I could not see any trees or shrubs with fruit. But there is is a lot of land behind the houses and at the east end of the street. If you happen to be birding at the above location, do consider the following: A tall Eastern Redcedar Juniperus virginiana is on the north side of 33 Mile Road, opposite the corner of Carnegie Lane, in Bruce Township, Macomb County. Carnage Lane is a dead end north-south street between Dequindre and Fisher. About 60 Cedar Waxwings were either feeding on the fruit of this tree, flying to and from this tree, or perching in the trees and shrubs along the south side of 33 Mile Road. I watched these birds between 4:30 PM and 5:15 PM. I did not see a Bohemian Waxwing. But there is a fair chance that I could have missed one because I do not hear birds. Furthermore at 5:56 PM I had the good fortune to watch a Pileated Woodpecker in a straight non-bounding flight, undoubtedly roost bound. This was just south of 31 Mile Road and to the east of Dequindre Road in Washington Township, Macomb County. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] LEMP From: Krissi Harris <khiceland(AT)prodigy.net> Date: 1 Mar 2008 8:47pm ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- I spent another Saturday at Lake Erie Metro Park. I finally, after 2 months of trying, was able to take a decent picture of a Golden Crowned Kinglet. They are cute little birds and full of energy. The Great Blue Herons seemed to be much more active today. They were consistently flying by. The Bald Eagles were displaying for us and that is always exciting to see. I took a picture of what I think is a lesser Scaup. He allowed some really nice looks as he hung out with the gulls and mallards right at the boat launch. And finally I saw my first Red-winged Blackbird of the year. He was hanging out in the tree were the Long Eared Owl usually are. Finally March is here and it won't be long now! Other Species: Brown Creeper Swans Geese Black Ducks Red Tailed Crows White Throated Sparrows Chickadees (lots) White Breasted Nuthatch Cardinals Ruddy Canvas Backs Common Merganser Buffleheads Ring Billed Gull GBB Gull Robin Coot Tree Sparrow Downy I posted some pics to my Grovestreet of the Golden Crowned and Scaup if you are interested.
