For me the best was a Red-breasted Merganser. There were several Canvasbacks and Redheads, multiple Lesser Scaup and Ring-neck Ducks, a pair of Hooded Mergansers and a Horned Grebe. Little Lake is just west of Ann Arbor. It is reached by taking Jackson Road west past Wagner to Parkland Plaza. Left (south) on Parkland Plaza to Little Lake Drive. Right (west) on Little Lake Road and left at the second driveway - the Homebuilders Association. Down the driveway to view the pond. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] WX:March Lion Lurking From: Dave Sing <dsing(AT)umich.edu> Date: 3 Mar 2008 10:51am WX; During the past two days of fine weather the March winter lion has been resting in her lair, ready to pounce on Michigan over the next few days. Today's wonderful mild air will bring a batch of rain, which is driven ahead of a strong cold front. The temps will begin to fall this afternoon and the whole state should be back to snow by this evening. A short lull, then a big storm lumbering up the Ohio Valley will edge overhead by tomorrow night, and by Wednesday morning we will have another shoveling session with at least a few inches of wind-driven snow. Cold will remain through the weekend, with another shot at snowfall around Friday. Things do look to ease a bit next week, but I foresee a volatile transition from our hard winter to softer spring weather over the next few weeks. So, here's hoping that our March Lion shows a little mercy, and that her appearance foretells a flock of mild lambs by the end of the month. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Return of the Icterids, Lima Twp., Washtenaw Co. 3/3 From: "Dan Sparks-Jackson" <sparksjackson(AT)aol.com> Date: 3 Mar 2008 1:38pm Circa 1PM today I was made hopeful that spring may not be too too far away, near-term weather reports not withstanding. I submit the following evidence for consideration: Eight glossy Common Grackles attending a E. Starling flock along Dancer Road between Jackson and Jerusalem Roads. Just around the corner (Jerusalem Road just east of Guenther Road), about a dozen burbling male Red-winged Blackbirds (also in a Starling flock). The chorus of the Red-wingeds was wonderful to hear, and the crimson of their epaulettes was marvelously brilliant on this otherwise dreary day. I'm not expecting May just yet, but I feel like I can begin to anticipate warmer days ahead. I will keep an eye open, but whenever I start to worry he pops back up. So, I am hoping for the best, keep the Cooper's and Sharpie away and maybe this is one Oriole that made it through. I will keep you posted Happy Birding Ed Lewandowski Auburn Hills --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Icterids in Macomb Co. From: ruttabacki(AT)aol.com Date: 3 Mar 2008 7:44pm ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Birders, Upon returning home to Harrison Twp., Macomb Co, today at 5:15 our mile long street had two flocks of blackbirds.??We stopped to see if the?first flock included grackles and they were there in significant numbers.? So far this year we have had only one Common Grackle in the area.? Also included were European Starlings and Red-winged Blackbirds and Brown-headed Cowbirds.? When we came close to our bird feeder the birds took flight and a white bird was quite noticeable in with the blackbirds.? We only got short views and then it flew west over the North Marsh of Metro Beach Metropark.? Size and bill and walk seemed to be similar to a cowbird.? All the other blackbirds returned except this completely whitish-beige bird.? As we studied the blackbirds it became evident that we also had one Rusty Blackbird.
