Subject: [birders] Bohemian Waxwing, Ionia County...
From: Scott Manly <manlyrs(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 4 Mar 2008 8:12am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Yesterday afternoon, I came across a flock of some 25 waxwings on M-44 in B=
elding, MI just west of the bridge. After scanning the flock, I found one =
Bohemian sitting higher than the rest (and slightly larger). A lifer for m=
e!!
=20
Also had 3 Sandhill Cranes on Ostrum Road just East of Chickering.
=20
Neat to see a winter bird, then a Spring bird within minutes of each other.
=20
=20
Also, on Saturday afternoon, I had 2 Merlin sightings (different birds) a R=
ough-legged Hawk and a Cooper's Hawk along Stage Road East and North of Ion=
ia.
=20
=20
Good birding,
Scott Manly,
Ionia, MI

Subject: [birders] Bohemian Bandwagon; WX: storm on track
From: Dave Sing <dsing(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 4 Mar 2008 9:35am
Howdy. The local outbreak of Bohemian waxwings this winter spread
into our yard this morning, as at least 4
bulky Bohemians were mixed with more slender Cedars around the now
well-depleted Highbush cranberry
down the hollow behind the house in Chelsea. Had a great look at a
flashy male, whose yellow wing bars
and reddish undertail stood out against the less fancy adjacent
Cedars. Only my second encounter with
this species, other was up in Bellaire on a -20F morning some years
ago. Also active were a bunch of Robins
and a noisy Hairy woodpecker, and at least two singing Carolina wren,
and the other usuals. No Redpoll or
American tree sparrow now for at least a week, but Junco are still
hanging tight.
WX: Latest storm is on track for tonight. All have probably heard
the story well by now - some sleet and ice
downriver of Detroit, a sharp cut-off of the precip to the North and
West. Of interest is the potential for strong
banding across SE MI as the storm passes to our South, similar to the
New Year's Eve storm. This is a
real textbook classic Southern Plains/Ohio Valley system, and it
should be past us and roaring into
New England by daybreak. Amounts are tough to call, but i would say
at least 4" for SE MI, with some
places potentially getting much more, with a distinct demarcation of
the edge of the storm around the
Tri-cities over to Grand Rapids. Cold air reinforces over the
weekend, then eases into next week.

----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Friends:
While out on the pier looking for ducks at Neff Park at 2:45 this afternoon,
I was treated to a fly-over of a Rough-Legged Hawk. It moved north along the
shoreline, occasionally wandering out over the Lake St. Clair ice and then back
toward shore.
Hey, Jeff: You let one of your birds get away!
There really is nothing else of note to report other than two Greater
Black-backed Gulls. There's stuff out there, but ice still extends too far out
into
the lake to get a good look at anything.

I've had red breasted nuthatches all winter and they're still coming.
Eating suet and peanuts. Sometimes there are 2 or 3 and sometimes just
one. Also still getting Titmice. I thought the Juncos were gone but
they're back again today with everything freezing. Couple of tree
sparrows. Chickadees still abundant. This weather is keeping them close
to the feeders.
