Subject: [birders] Canada goose with leg band at Gallup
From: eba(AT)umich.edu
Date: 5 Mar 2008 8:26am
Hi folks,
I observed in pictures I took yesterday at Gallup Park in Ann Arbor that
one Canada goose was wearing a leg band. I don't know if that is of
specific interest to anyone, but I thought it was worth mentioning in case
it is. I've posted a picture to the birdersATumich Grove street site at
http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html
Details as to the location are included there.
I also saw a great blue heron in the same general area, flying east along
the canal between the island with the path and the north side of the river,
from just below the boat-launch area. I did not see where it landed.

Last year (2007) we had a pair of Eastern Phoebes arrive in Cleveland a
couple weeks before Easter. These birds had raised three clutches of
young in our horse barn the previous two years and we were looking
forward to another year of the same. Then came a heavy, deep snow that
stayed about 10 days. The birds stopped singing after the first day
then just disappeared. It was really sad. They fed exclusively AWAY
from the feeders so there was no way to help them. No birds replaced
them that year. We hope the location can attract another nesting pair
this year.

Yes Andreas I remember quite well how it goes. I usually
wind up hosting them for a couple weeks in the fall too. Putting all
the feeders closer to the house seems to discourage them a bit. Going
south in the fall I don't feel so bad for them as they're more likely to
encounter plentiful food on the way down. It's the early arrivers
driven by instinct that wind up biting off more miles than they can chew
in their northbound trek. From what I've read about Purple Martins,
northbound birds won't turn back to look for food even if the weather
gets extremely bad. They just starve to death in their efforts to
secure the BEST nest site they can remember where they were hatched
from.

I'm
fairly sure I heard a Common Grackle early Sunday morning but it never
made
an appearance around here so the RWBB gets credit instead.

Subject: [birders] Re: Canada goose with leg band at Gallup
From: ddarm(AT)umich.edu
Date: 5 Mar 2008 9:25am
Quite a few years ago in summer, Mi DNR banded many Canada Geese at
Gallup and the nearby golf course as part of a study to see how many
new geese returned to Gallup to breed. It was the beginning of an
effort to reduce the number of Canada Geese using high "human use"
areas in the parks. Leg bands were put on as many geese as possible and
about every 30-50th goose got a numbered green neck band.
If one of the geese became a hunter's bounty, the leg band number would
get reported. Otherwise, the green neck bands that showed up were
reported and the silver banded geese "counted". The green neck bands
are easier to read and usually get reported whenever seen. The color of
the neck band can tell generally which flyway a bird was banded in.
Julie Craves 's website offers some interesting information about bird banding
http://www.umd.umich.edu/dept/rouge_river/
And the USGS site does so as well.

Subject: [birders] Sandhills return to Lyndon Twp.

Longtime reader, first time poster...
My husband heard the first sandhill cranes of '08 flying over our
place on Island Lake this morning. What a sound for sore (ice cold!)
ears!
We've had a lot of irruptives at our feeders this winter, including at
least 20 redpolls in December, two or more RBN all winter, purple
finches, white throated sparrow, and one cute pine siskin. The siskin,
RBN, tree sparrows and juncos are all still hanging around, but
haven't seen the redpolls for at least a couple of weeks. But the
craziest sighting of all happened last week, when we got our first
ever house sparrows at our feeder. We have lived on Island Lake for 8
years and have never seen them there! I'm hoping against hope that
that doesn't correlate with the fewer numbers of bluebirds we have
seen this winter. In years past, we have frequently had up to 8
bluebirds at a time on our heated birdbath, but this winter we only
saw one bird, just one time.

I ran into Tom Shehan at Little Lake today and he mentioned he had seen a
Cackling Goose at the Dexter Mill Pond so, of course, I went over there. Most
of my experience with Cackling Geese is with the Aleutian subspecie in
California which is pretty easy to tell from Canada Geese. Having said that I
found what I also believe to be a Cackling Goose today. It is significantly
smaller than any of the Canada Geese and has a shorter bill.
The bird can be seen from the Forest Lawn Cemetery. I went in the first
entrance off of Grand Street coming from Baker Road. Drive to the river and
turn left, go through the large puddles of water to a dirt pile and scan the
geese along the river. When I left the goose was sitting by itself with it's
back visible but it had been active earlier.
To get to Baker Road take I-94 west from Ann Arbor to the Baker Road exit -
number 167 I believe. After exiting head north on Baker Road towards the village
of Dexter turning left on Grand Street.

Birders,
At about 12:30 today from the cemetery next to the Dexter Millpond, I
observed a Cackling Goose with a group of Canada Geese. It was seen on the
far side of the creek from the western most drive near the two outbuildings.
I also went to Little Lake Drive off of Jackson Ave. and ran into Bob
Arthurs, we observed the Horned Grebe that has been there with the other
usual waterfowl. On returning home through Dexter, I stopped again at the
millpond but could not relocate the Cackling Goose; though there were many
geese asleep on the banks of the creek at that time.

I have turkeys at the cottage in the Rogers City area much of the year. I
spread corn right under my kitchen/office window. They often come to feed
while I'm working there and if I'm really lucky, I see them before they see
me. I very very slooooowwwwly reach for the camera I keep beside me always
and have been lucky enough to get some really close-up shots. Beards vary
from very short to 12 inches or more. It's particularly fun to watch their
heads change color and see them spread their tails and strut.

You are a lucky lady!
Yesterday I drove by 12 turkeys RIGHT NEXT TO THE ROAD and no camera in
the car!!! All of them had beards about 8 - 12 inches long! I have
never seen so many so close.
I called my son and offered $5 for gas if he would drive to the spot and
get some pictures. By the time he got there the birds were moving into
the woods and he received a great lesson in camouflage. The Kodak
Moment was gone!

Birders,
Bob Arthurs saw the Cackling Goose in Dexter further upstream than I did so
if you try for it, check the whole stretch of creek.

Birders,
At about 12:30 today from the cemetery next to the Dexter Millpond, I
observed a Cackling Goose with a group of Canada Geese.

Subject: [Ohio-birds] Your Red Knot action needed today
You can help the Red Knot immediately.
Your simple action by this weekend, at the latest, will make a difference.
This is the hot topic in the New Jersey Legislature, now. The legislative
cycle is at a critical moment right now.
My suggestions follow:
Send an Email today.
Your Emails, personal letters (by FAX or Email), and phone calls during the
next two days will most effectively wield favorable influence in the
decision-making process now underway in the New Jersey Legislature,
Environment Committee. They are deciding whether or not to send a Bill to
the floor extending the moratorium on horseshoe crab harvest.
STEP ONE: Go to the Ohio Birds Forum and review the talking-points offered
by New Jersey Audubon in Casey Tucker's post under CONSERVATION. Find
senator contacts there. Use these talking-points to develop a brief
statement of your own, in your words, asking the environment committee to
move the Bill, S1331, to the floor for a full vote. Keep it simple.
STEP TWO: Go to Ohio Birds Forum to see my letter posted under CONSERVATION.
I offer additional talking-points emphasizing sensitivity to all
stake-holders in the debate. A dispassionate broad view sensitive to all
interests may offer the opposition wording for ideas and positions they
agree with and can use to justify supporting the moratorium. REMEMBER: Just
about everyone wants to save the Red Knot. Opposition is gravitating toward
polemic positions to protect their relationships with business, watermen
associations, and other consumptive interests.
STEP THREE: Send an email to each committee member within the next hour.
The SUBJECT line should ask them to send S1331 to the floor for full vote.
The body should simply ask them to move S1331 to the floor for a full vote
to extend the horseshoe crab moratorium. Identify yourself as an Ohio
birder. Tell them if you have traveled to New Jersey and watched birds, or
if you plan to do so, and when.
STEP FOUR: If you have more to say, compose a personal letter to express
your view more fully and send it by Email as an attachment. Your letter
should be shorter than this long Email. Fit the letter to one page.
STEP FIVE: Call each senator on the committee. A staffer will answer.
Prepare facts in advance. Identify yourself as an Ohio birder and
immediately express support for S1331. Ask to speak to the senator (good
luck). Be nice. Offer facts. Tell them you have, or plan, to travel to New
Jersey to watch birds, if this is true.
I have called all the senators and some staffers were interested in
talking-points. I have sent to each a shorter version of the sample letter I
posted to Ohio Birds Forum.

Subject: [birders] coopers hawks
From: "j fisher" <biggrinnell(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 5 Mar 2008 9:16pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Across from where I live, there is a mature stand of American Beech where
many creatures reside, especially for suburbia... For the last two or three
years, several Coopers Hawks have stayed all year, probably because of my
birdfeeder smorgasbord... and maybe cuz of the nice habitat, though limited
in size. Great Horns and Screechs live there too, along with lots
of Redbellied Woodpeckers, to name just a few of my favorites.
Last year I watched a pair breed, of which two viable offspring survived.
The adults are gone, but one of the juveniles patrols my yard and calls
loudly each morning as the sun rises. Is this calling an attempt to find a
mate? Are they homebodies? Will this generation perhaps use the nest?
Can someone give a synopsis of the species preferences, behaviours,
cycles....
Thanks alot.
Love, Jeff
