Subject: [birders] Little Lake Today-newcomers
From: Lehef(AT)aol.com
Date: 7 Mar 2008 12:37am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
A small white, round-headed goose w. black wingtips (Ross's?) flew in around
3:30. Two American wigeons appeared today, along with the northern pintale,
canvasbacks, redheads, scaup, Amer. black and ring-necked ducks, coots, and of
course mallards and Canada geese. Someone else reported gadwall later.
I did not see the horned grebes nor the red-breasted merganser nor wood duck
(around 2:00-3:00) this afternoon. Muskrats were active.

The 50 degree thaw Monday found nothing new as expected at our feeders. =
More then half of our regular flock of 70-80 (!) Tree Sparrows =
disappeared though. Tuesday before the big snow arrived, 2 Robins, 2 =
Red Winged Blackbirds, 1 Song Sparrow, 20 Brown Headed Cowbirds were =
present in our yard along with a Coopers Hawk chasing everything around! =
A trip along the St. Clair River that PM checking for ducks etc., it =
was very windy, the water was choppy. A few Buffleheads, Common =
Mergansers, Redheads, Canada Geese, and several Mallards was all to be =
seen bobbing in the rough waves. A couple of Red-Tail Hawks on the way =
home.
On Friday the 29th Feb. we had a beautiful Red Phase Eastern Screech Owl =
in one of our Wood Duck boxes all day. It would hang out the opening =
intently watching all our feeder birds! A couple of times it almost =
completely came out seemingly to go after a bird! Try as I may it would =
not let me get close enough to get a decent photo before ducking back in =
the box. I did get only one mediocre pic. which I posted on =
www.northbirding.com sightings forum.
Today (6th) at our feeders we had Red Wing Blackbirds, Grackles plus a =
pair of Eastern Bluebirds were checking some of our nestboxes!
Our son-in-law is on the road daily in the Macomb, St. Clair county area =
around Richmond. He has seen for several days now dozens of Robins, =
several Grackles, Red Wing Blackbirds, Eastern Bluebirds, Horned Larks, =
Wild Turkeys and a few Killdeer!
Several reports of Bald Eagles along the St. Clair River.
Our Common Redpolls we had all disappeared several weeks ago along with =
all House Finches (odd!) and most of our Goldfinches. Still have at =
least one Red-Breasted Nuthatch and the usual Juncos, Chickadees, =
Tufted Titmouses etc. As spring unfolds I'm looking for a return of =
many as I suspect many of this seasons irruptive winter species went =
even further south into Ohio, Kentucky etc. Surely our feeder bird of =
the winter here has been Tree Sparrows! Most every day up to 70-80 =
present!

Subject: [birders] Bohemian Waxwing, Washtenaw County
From: Macklin Smith <macklins(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 7 Mar 2008 8:53am
Birders,
I'm happy to report one Bohemian Waxwing seen this morning around 8:00 at
Country Farm Park, from the main loop trail about 250 yards heading
counterclockwise from the water tower parking lot (off of Manchester, south
of Washtenaw). I've been seeing Cedar Waxwings out there sporadically for
the past month on early AM dog-walks, with a maximum of nine birds, but
today County Farm Park was unusually birdy. There were about 80 robins
flocking and flying here and there, and (apparently) three different flocks
of waxwings, one with as many as 15 birds. These all looked and sounded
like Cedars to me, but when we came to the aforementioned spot a small
group of perched Cedar Waxwings was joined by a single Bohemian. The size
difference was immediately evident. I didn't have binoculars, but the
waxwings were quite close and the Bohemian's rufous undertail coverts and
deep gray breast were obvious. The birds were facing in my direction.
Didn't see wing markings, but heard the Bohemian's deeper call amidst the
higher-pitch Cedars. After about twenty seconds, all of the waxwings in
the tree took off to the south, but flying low and locally, it seemed.
Not sure this bird is exactly chaseable, but it would probably be worth
trying to relocate waxwing flocks out there today or in the next few days.
I didn't see any berries or crabapple trees that would suggest a stake-out
spot, but the great majority of the bird activity-robins and
waxwings-seemed to be in the sector just southeast of the woods where the
water tower is. I've only seen waxwings out there every fifth day or so,
so have wondered where if anywhere they might be hanging out. County Farm
Park is mostly thicket habitat, but is of course bordered by small
house-lots, a number of which could well contain good food sources; or
maybe there are plenty of berries in the park itself, much of which is not
easily surveyed. I'll definitely have my bins with me tomorrow AM!

Hi Skye. The DNR Wildlife biologists are aware of this because they are
finding them in other areas around the lake and up in the flats. They
have collected some and are having them tested. They are suspecting it
may be starvation. They do want reports if there are species other than
Canvasback or Redheads, that may indicate something else may be
occurring such as disease. We are finding dead Canvasbacks here at
Metro Beach. Julie Champion-Metro Beach Nature Center

Subject: [birders] Washtenaw Audubon waterfowl trip on Sunday
From: songsparrow(AT)wowway.com
Date: 7 Mar 2008 9:27am
Birders,
After my forbidding post last night about the terrible weather forecast with
lots of snow leading to a possible cancellation of the Washtenaw Audubon
Society waterfowl field trip on Sunday, I wish to begin a retraction this
morning.
I watched the TV weather station before going to work this morning, and just
now I logged on to Weather Underground. Snow is indeed predicted for
Saturday, but Sunday appears quite nice. In fact, the sun should be shining
(through clouds, of course) by 8:00 am on Sunday. With this in mind, please
continue to watch this site and the website, www.washtenawaudubon.org, for
any changes; but, at this time it appears that Sunday's field trip for
waterfowl will go on. Meet at the #4 sign near Sears in Briarwood Mall
parking lot at 8:15 am for an 8:30 am departure.

Russ, Skye:
With the thaw/sudden freeze pattern we saw over the past couple of weeks, it=
=20
would not surprise me that these dead ducks were caught in the ice. It happe=
ns=20
regularly down here at my end of Lake St. Clair. Over the years I've seen=20
ducks, geese, gulls and swans all dead and frozen solid. And a few still ali=
ve=20
and covered with ice. I know they're alive because they still are able to bl=
ink=20
their eyes.=20
It's worst at night when two things happen -- the temperature drops suddenly=
=20
and the wind shifts. Often ducks will find a little crease in the ice that=20
will open up on a warm late-winter day, and they will settle in to feed, pre=
en=20
and sleep. That crease will quickly freeze after the passage of a cold front=
=20
while the ducks are sleeping. If the ducks are lucky, they'll be able to get=
out=20
when the sun comes up and melts the ice again. If it's cloudy, the ducks may=
=20
be out of luck.
If the wind shifts, the ducks could be caught between large sheets of ice=20
weighing several tons each. Once dead, these ducks become fox, crow or eagle=
=20
food.=20
It's not pretty to contemplate, but it's the way life goes.=20

For anyone heading to the Point Pelee area in Leamington,Ontario soon,=C2=
=A0 I am reporting that there are several hundred Tundra Swans in the corn f=
ields on Consession B between East Beach Road and County Road 19. This is ju=
st north of the Park.
Also reported by Friends of Point Pelee:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Since last weeks post the ice on the east side of Point Pelee has opened up
to within 500 metres of the beach and Common Merganser and Common Goldeneye
can now be seen up and down the East Beach. Ice still surrounds the Tip
itself and the West Beach.
The lack of open water did not stop new spring migrants from showing up at
Point Pelee this week. The first Red-winged Blackbird and White-breasted
Nuthatch were noted around the Marsh Boardwalk and Concession E road on
Saturday. Ruby-crowned Kinglet was noted at the Tip and Woodland Nature
Trail, White-throated Sparrow on the Woodland Nature Trail and Hermit
Thrush in Tilden=E2=80=99s Woods on Sunday.
Over-wintering birds were much more vocal this week. The Yellow-rumped
Warbler has separated itself from the mixed flock and was making its
distinctive =E2=80=9Cchek=E2=80=9D sound north of Delaurier. While not quite=
yet in full
=E2=80=9Ctea-kettle=E2=80=9D song four Carolina Wren were chattering along t=
he Woodland
Trail. Even the Downy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers were much more vocal. A
Cooper=E2=80=99s Hawk was checking out a former nest site in Tilden=E2=80=
=99s Woods and
mobbing American Crow revealed a Great Horned Owl on the Shuster Trail.
The Onion Fields outside the Park had one Rough-legged Hawk and several
Northern Harrier, including a beautiful plumaged male. While Horned Lark is
still present, they have dispersed and are scattered around the Concession
Roads. Snow Bunting was reported from the Tip, although were notably absent
outside the Park.
Muddy Creek at Wheatley Harbour had two adult-plumaged Black-crowned
Night-Heron sitting on the ice near the open water outflow from the Omstead
Food plant.
Visitors to Point Pelee National Park should note that the bridge over the
Sturgeon Creek from the Bevel Line Road to Point Pelee Drive is closed for
repair until April 18, 2008. To access the Park go east on Seacliff Drive
East from Erie Street South in Leamington. Continue east on Seacliff Drive
past the Bevel Line turn-off to Concession Road 12. Turn Right on
Concession 12 and join up with Point Pelee Drive at Paula's Restaurant.

Subject: [birders] Short-eared Owls and Rough-legged Hawks Continue
in Lenawee, County
From: w8liftr40(AT)aol.com
Date: 7 Mar 2008 9:18pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Greetings Birders,
I checked out the fields on Murphy HWY/Pennington Rds and the block of
Kehoe/Sutfin/Clinton-macon/Murphy HWY this evening.
The Short-eared Owls have moved to the Kehoe block from their previous?location
on Pennington/Murphy HWY. I counted 8?Short-eared Owls?in the Kehoe Block. The
birds were out around 6:30 this evening and actively hunting. The field here
makes seeing the birds more difficult than their previous location, because the
taller grass?where the birds hunt is farther away from the road than the
Pennington fields. The birds were in two groups. The first being visible from
Kehoe Road. The other group visible from Clinton-macon.
8-9 Rough-legged Hawks continue in the Kehow Block as well. These were recorded
earlier in the day today and yesterday.
The highlight, however, was yesterday (Thursday) morning when I found a
sub-adult Golden Eagle perched on a cross-beam of a powerpole in the Kehoe
block, making it the 10 species or raptor utilizing this network of fields. I
went back to try and relocated the eagle later in the day, but was unable to
relocate it.

Subject: [birders] Found injured owl
From: Krissi Harris <khiceland(AT)prodigy.net>
Date: 7 Mar 2008 6:50pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
My husband called me to tell me he found an injured owl on a residential street
here in Redford. I gathered up the cat carrier and when I arrived the owl was
in bad shape. But there were no obvious signs of injury. He was breathing. My
husband scooped him up and took him to an emergency clinic. I am still waiting
to hear what has happened. It was a little Screech Owl. The first one I have
ever seen but definitely not the way I wanted to see one. It is very upsetting.
What is the best thing to do in a case like this? Who do I call? Where do I
take injured birds at almost 10:00pm.
Thanks
Kristina Harris

Subject: [birders] Update on injured owl

I just talked to my husband and he took the owl to a place in Novi and a
specialist has been called. My husband said the owl was breathing a lot better
and even moved around a little bit in the cage. I am hoping he was just stunned
and will be okay. I will probably call the clinic tomorrow for an update.
