Jeff,
I completely agree that the RRRC is a fine organization. However, time =
and distance are also considerations. A 100-mile round-trip drive with =
an injured bird is not necessarily the best option if you're located in =
Redford (Krissi) or Inkster (me), for example.=20
In response to similar inquiries I receive on a regular basis, I forward =
the following link that lists licensed wildlife rehabiliators by county, =
what their specialty is, and their contact information:

If there are better sources than this, I'm interested to know about =
them.

From: "Mag Tait" <mtait(AT)umich.edu>

There was a Turkey Vulture flying down my street last night when I came
home.
Today, just as I was wondering if the Red Breasted Nuthatches had moved
on,
one stopped by for a bit of suet.
The lone Flicker that has been eating peanut butter came by. While other
large woodpeckers don't seem to bother the feeding birds, they clear out
for the Flicker. Anyone know the reason why?

Subject: [birders] sandhills
From: "Sally K Scheer" <winerat(AT)villagecorner.com>
Date: 8 Mar 2008 11:10am
We had 16 sandhills cranes in the field next to our house and while we
watched, 4 more landed. If anyone is in the area and would like to see them,
the field is the next one north of 13422 Clinton Rd. on the west side of the
road. This is one mile north of the traffice light in Clinton. If you go
around a curve, you've gone one house too far.
Please do not get out of your car to watch. They are very skittish. They
don't seem to be bothered by passing cars but moving people would dispatch
them from the scene.
They nest in the swamp west of our house, north of the millpond, and have
been gathering and rattling for the past few days.

Subject: [birders] sandhills still there but moved a bit and a
question
From: "Sally K Scheer" <winerat(AT)villagecorner.com>
Date: 8 Mar 2008 12:48pm
The 20+ sandhills are still here though they have grazed their way north a
bit and are now sort of hunkered down near a small wood patch in the field.
Should still be visible from the road if anyone is in the area.
Sibley shows a Greater and a Lesser Sandhill. Can one of you experts discuss
the differences and whether we have the Greater or the Lesser in this area?
I suspect from some enlarged pictures I took last fall that we have the
Lesser. Right?

Subject: [birders] interesting waxwing - not bohemian :(
From: "Richard Neubig" <rneubig(AT)med.umich.edu>
Date: 8 Mar 2008 2:12pm
Hi all,
I ran across a flock of waxwings on Miller between Wagner and M-14 (NW or Ann
Arbor). I didn't find any bohemians but there was one cedar that had a bright
orange tip to its tail in contrast to the yellow tip on the other birds. Other
markings - yellow on breast, size, and light undertail coverts all looked like
cedar.
Is this a common variant?

Subject: [birders] Re: Pileated Woodpecker Casco Twp. St. Clair
county
From: "Russell Emmons" <birdeland(AT)pasty.net>
Date: 8 Mar 2008 2:40pm
Bruce and all: Washington & Bruce Twps. are the far NW Twps. in Macomb
county, easily 25 to 30 miles from here. That area of Macomb west of M53 is
very old woods and hills and would be ideal for Pileateds. There has been a
pair about 12 miles west of us in recent years east of Richmond in St. Clair
county along the Belle River which is very desolate, rugged, hilly, and
mature woods area. Interestingly that area (Columbus Twp.) according to the
late Alice H. Kelly "Birds of S.E. MICHIGAN and S. W. ONTARIO 1978", was
one of the last confirmed hangouts of Pileateds back in the late 60s, early
70s in SE MI! There has been at least one Pileated seen and photograhed up
in the Port Huron SGA in the past couple years, (about 30 miles from here).
I've heard rumors of a pair on Harsens Island. There are other Pileateds
reported further up in the thumb more & more and it appears this species is
taking back some of its original range--I say Hooray to that! The pair seen
NE of us the past year is only 2 to 3 miles away and could likely be one of
what we had here. I doubt any of the others I mention here though would be
the same.

Russ,
I remember chasing Pileated Woodpeckers near New Baltimore in the 1970s.

Every day, the hummingbird eats its own weight in food.
You may wonder how it weighs the food.
It doesn't. It just eats another hummingbird.

Subject: [birders] Re: interesting waxwing - not bohemian :(
From: Macklin Smith <macklins(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 8 Mar 2008 4:18pm
All,
There's an article on just this phenomenon--and many others--in the 39/5,
Oct 2007 issue of Birding: "Color Abnormalities in Birds: A Proposed
Nomenclature for Birders." The waxwing Rick describes has a condition
called "carotenism"--or at least that's what the author, Jeff N. Davis,
proposes we call it. (The nomenclature is, I think, a little much, I feel,
and verges on pedantry.) Anyhow, this condition is a result of diet.
Another article in the same issue of Birding is called "Tricks Exotic
Shrubs Do: When Baltimore Orioles Stop Being Orange," and in this piece red
orioles, orange-tail-tipped Cedar Waxwings, and White-throated Sparrows
with orange lores are all tied convincingly to Morrow's honeysuckle and
Tartarian honeysuckle, recently popular introduced plantings. The
variations in birds are new and timed to the plants. The particular
chemical ingested is rhodoxanthin, which (I quote) "is structurally similar
to many of the carotenoids deposited in the plumage of birds." So maybe we
should be careful what name we slap on this phenomenon...as it may not
literally be "carotenism" at all.
(No Bohemian Waxwing or indeed any waxwings at County Farm Park today. Two
robins heard, a couple of subdued cardinal chips. Very quiet--maybe the
weather, maybe all those flocks just moved on.)

Subject: [birders] Re: sandhills still there but moved a bit and a
question
From: Diana Dyer <dianagrantdyer(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 8 Mar 2008 3:06pm
Sally,
I'll be interested to see how the experts on this
listserv weigh in on your question, but I would guess
that we have the Greater sandhill cranes here in
Michigan. When I visited the Rowe Audubon Sanctuary
along the Platte River in Nebraska last March to see
(and hear!) the spring migration of hundreds of
thousands if not millions of sandhill cranes, we were
told that they have the lesser sandhill cranes in that
area of the country. I was fortunate to be in the
right place at the right time to see a whole field of
these sandhill cranes with one whooping crane standing
in among them. By comparison, the whooping crane
looked like a white giraffe out in the field standing
next to these sandhill cranes, which when bending over
to eat didn't look much larger than Canadian geese on
a first impression. I have had one previous experience
where I saw two whooping cranes standing with one
sandhill crane (up in the thumb area a few years ago)
and did not have any impression of that extreme size
difference.
Comparisons are always nice to help set images in my
mind. I was so overwhelmed and excited by the
experience of being surrounded by and hearing ALL
these sandhill cranes out in Nebraska that I am not
sure I would have even noticed that those sandhills
were smaller than what I am used to seeing here!
We had to drive through a county with active tornados
to get there that day (I felt like I was truly going
through "Wizard of Oz" territory!) but we made it. If
you go, believe the information when it tells you to
wear all your warm clothes. The day started out over
70 degrees and was under 30 degrees with wicked wind
chill (even in the sturdy wooden blind) by the time we
arrived for the evening viewing. There were many
people there who were woefully unprepared (and
miserable).
We were told that the particular whooping crane we saw
was part of the flock that spends its winter in Texas.
An experience I'll never forget and worth the effort
to get there.

From: Catherine Carroll <songsparrow(AT)wowway.com>

Birders,
The Washtenaw Audubon Society field trip for waterfowl goes on!
Meet tomorrow morning at 8:15 am for an 8:30 am departure at the #4
sign near Sears in the Briarwood Mall parking lot. The trip will
probably go until about
12:00 noon.
Two things you will need to know: 1. Dress warmly. The north wind
was stiff today. 2. TURN YOUR CLOCK FORWARD ONE HOUR TONIGHT!
Currently the Washtenaw Audubon Society website is malfunctioning.
We will get the website back up as soon as possible.

Thanks for the Nebraska information. I'd love to copy your trip but am
unlikely to be able to do that any time soon. I'll participate vicariously
with you.
The sandhills in our corn field stayed all day, grazed slowly on the
leftover corn, starting near our barn and then wandered across 4 ten acre
strips to hunker down near the little wooded area in the next field. Then in
the late afternoon they grazed back toward us and took off for the swamps in
early evening. I love to hear these noisy fellas every day. They nest in
our swamp which borders the Raisin River and Iron Creek and they let us know
where they are all the time.
Wonder what they have in the UP? I've come across them feeding in the
ditches up there and they don't seem to care if cars a whizzing past them. I
was so surprised to see them near Dafter and they waited for me to back up
and confirm I wasn't crazy. I've also found them on the side of the road
near the airport in Rogers City. Now that really surprised and pleased me. I
was afraid when we finally get to live up there that sandhills would be a
thing of the past.

Birders,
This afternoon an HORNED GREBE was on the 'big' Portage lake side of
Dexter-Pinckney Road where the road crosses over the water. This is three
miles south of Pinckney for those unfamiliar. It was the only bird on that
side. On the 'little' Portage lake side were small numbers of each of the
following: Mute Swan, Mallard, Gadwall, Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked
Duck, Lesser Scaup, Common Goldeneye, and Bufflehead.
Later, at the little park (name?) on the Huron River between Ford and
Belleville Lakes (east side of Rawsonville Road between Grove and Textile),
there were Mute Swan, Canada Geese, Gadwall, Canvasback, Redhead,
Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, many, many Common Mergansers (males &
females) and a single adult Bald Eagle.

Krissi,
I know about your owl. I had to go up to an emergency vet in Novi
last night to pick one up. It came from Redford. It had a broken
back, I had to have it euthanized. Poor little thing. I'm going to
give you some contact numbers: me, Sherri Smith 734 994-6287, Bird
Center of Washtenaw County 734 761-9640, River Raisin Raptor Center
734-395-4081 or 734 428-8455. Write down the numbers. When you find
a bird in trouble, use the phone, not e-mail. It has been a bad week
for owls. Friday i had to go pick up an injured owl, which turned
out to be a Long-Eared Owl, in a residential area. It had a
completely ruined wing, too bad to even try to place it. Your
screech owl was kind of an unusual color, more brownish than usual.
Both dead owls now at the U of M Museum of Ornithology. I'm part of
the Bird Center, but often pick up raptors for River Raisin Raptor
Center.

Subject: [birders] Horned grebe in and Sanchill crane near Ann Arbor
From: eba(AT)umich.edu
Date: 8 Mar 2008 10:13pm
Late afternoon Friday I went to Gallup Park where I found a horned grebe
which had been reported there by several others. I got photos, one of
which I've posted to the birders' Grove Street site.
This afternoon I went to Little Lake off of Parkland Drive (?) west of Ann
Arbor, and I parked in the parking lot behind the Home Builders'
Association building, from which I could get a pretty good view of Little
Lake from the car with the window rolled down, without spooking the birds
too much. I was scanning the well-populated lake when the head & neck of a
sandhill crane popped into my view! Talk about right place & right time...
I've posted a picture of that, too, to the abovementioned site, which may
be reached at:
http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html
The crane left soon after, and appeared to fly south-east; I heard it again
a minute or two later, and saw it to the south, presumably over the field
south of the developed area around Little Lake. (There's a small pond over
there, but I would be surprised if it has thawed yet).
