From: ddarm(AT)umich.edu

16 Washtenaw Audubon Society birders successfully managed an hat trick
for owls last night in spite of the windy conditions. We viewed the
Great Horned Owl on nest at the M-14 west bound exit ramp onto Miller,
a pair of howling Barred Owls in western Washtenaw County and were
buzzed by (several?) Eastern Screech Owls in Lodi Township. Nice
evening in spite of the cold.

Parks Canada is proposing to shoot double-crested cormorants on Middle Island in
April. The plan, that could be changed depending on nesting trends, is to
reduce the number of nests on the island from about 4,000 down to 440 to 840 in
the next five years.
Middle Island is the southern most Canadian Island south of Point Pelee National
Park, both of which are managed by Parks Canada.

Hi All,

Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.
PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!
You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with
an attachment entitled 'Invitation' OR ONE CALLED 'POSTCARD,' regardless of
who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens an Olympic Torch OR A
POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. This
virus will be received from someone who has your e-ma il ad dress in his/her
contact list.
This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts.
It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and
open it.
If you receive a mail called 'Invitation' even though sent to you by a
friend, do not open it. Shut down your computer immediately.
This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by
McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This
virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital

Subject: [birders] Spring bounty
From: shoi1(AT)comcast.net
Date: 12 Mar 2008 1:17pm
Spring is definately approaching here in Saint Clair Shores, though the
snow attempts to dissuade one from thinking so. Our feeders are keeping us
busy with re-filling. We have had 2 Redpolls darting in and out for the
last three days. There is a Red-Winged Blackbird flying from front to back
yard, with an occasional stop-over on the garage that entertains me to no
end. A grouping of 8-10 cowbirds visited us one day early last week, along
with a large grouping (35) of Goldfinches.
Fred had the luck of seeing a Turkey Vulture at Vernier and I-94 on the
last day of February.
It seems that my kitched window is The spot to be in these last, lingering
days of winter.
Good birding to all!

Subject: [birders] Re: White-fronted Goose, Washtenaw Co.
From: "Bruce M. Bowman" <bbowman99(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 12 Mar 2008 4:56pm
The Greater White-fronted Goose was still there, 4:00-4:15 today. It was
in some cattails or other dry grass just down the railroad embankment.
It was on the shore or on ice at water's edge with Canada Geese. It
should have been possible to spot the bird from the Foster/Maple bridge,
but Bob Kelsch and I didn't see it from there. Maybe it had its head
tucked. It was something like 200 yards west of the Maple Rd./Huron
River Dr. intersection. You'll need to climb up the embankment. The
slope is steep and slippery ever where it's not snow covered. The best
place to do the climb is 50 feet east of the Maple Rd./Huron River Dr.
road sign. Climb up and then walk west. There's not much room for
pulling your car off the road.
Thanks for finding this bird, Joe.
I'll post some photos later.

Regardless of whether a virus warning is real or not, it's not welcome at
birders. It has to be considered spam. We can't do it all at
birders(AT)umich.edu, so we limit the subject matter to wild birds (mostly
in Michigan) with exceptions for occasional posts about non-bird nature

many Canada Geese.
This afternoon there was a winter plumage, female, long-tailed duck =20

at least 16 wood ducks, 26 hooded mergansers and many redheads, =20
canvasbacks, ring neck ducks, greater scaup, bufleheads and golden =20
eyes. I found two horned grebes and two pied billed grebes. There =20
were also widgeon, gadwall, black ducks, ruddy ducks and coots.
The white fronted goose was just 100 yards west of the Foster (Maple =20

calling so loudly this am that it woke me up, and this is now a daily

Howdy. Just espied a white-phase Snow goose among some Canadas in the
Dexter Mill Pond.
7:40 PM, Weds 3/12. Also a Pied-billed grebe, a smattering of Common

Eastern meadowlark, Steinbach and Trinkle rds. Very nice light-phase
Rough-legged hawk, open

From: ruttabacki(AT)aol.com

----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Birders,
At noon today?approximately 40 Common Redpolls were?on Inwood Road just west of
Mound Road in Macomb Co. north of Stony Creek Metropark.? One very light colored
redpoll?stood out from the flock but it had a large amount of streaking on
its?flanks.? I was not able to study the whole flock as a large county grading
truck was leveling this dirt road.? I presume this large flock of
redpolls?represents a welcome sign of spring as they gather together to fly
north again.? Horned Larks were also in the disturbed dirt of the road.

Jeff,
An excellent, and very current source of this kind of information is
available via the Birds of North America Online which can be accessed
through the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. There is a $40 annual
membership fee, but if you need to look up this kind of information
frequently, and need more complete details than any one individual "expert"
could provide, it is well worth it.

Every day, the hummingbird eats its own weight in food.
You may wonder how it weighs the food.
It doesn't. It just eats another hummingbird.
